MORE INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE
PLACES VISITED:
Parc Guëll:
A Gaudi Wonderland Parc Guëll is a wild and
colorful wonderland of a park located on a
hill in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.
Antoni Gaudi designed this popular
attraction from 1900 through 1914, initially
as a wealthy housing development,
commissioned by his benefactor Count
Eusebi Guëll. With only two homes built, the
project was purchased by the city and
developed into a public park in 1923. What
Gaudi left behind is a truly amazing and
hallucinatory testament to his use of art
nouveau and organic design.
Spectacular Main Staircase - The main
entrance to Parc Guëll at Carrer d'Olot
features a grand, multicolored winding
staircase leading the visitor to the top of this
hillside park. Flanked by a massive stone
wall adorned with colorful medallions and
two fairy tale inspired park buildings, the
entrance entices the visitor into a make
believe realm created by Gaudi. A famous
Gaudi sculpture of a dragon, formed with
broken ceramic tiles rests serenely at the
center of the massive staircase.
The staircase first leads to a hypostyle,
monumental chamber surrounded by 96
Doric inspired columns, originally designed
to serve as a public marketplace for the
planned community. Artist, Josep Maria Jujol
lined the columns and walls with colorful
mosaics and medallions.
Circular Plaza and Serpentine Bench :
The famous circular, serpentine inspired
bench surrounding the main park plaza, sits
on top of the Doric columned chamber. The
massive serpentine shaped bench is adorned
with colorful ceramic tiles in the trencadis
style, that Josep Maria Jujol used throughout
the park design. Visitors can relax on the
curved benches to experience a magnificent
panoramic view of the city below and other
Gaudi masterpieces such as, the Sagrada
Familia.
Gaudi’s House :
Antoni Gaudi and his father lived for a time,
in one of the park houses known as, la Torre
Rosa designed by architect Francesc
Berenguer in 1906. Visitors can tour Gaudi’s
former home, for a fee to view art nouveau
furniture designed by Gaudi and numerous
artifacts from his life there. A lovely garden
surrounds the house available for visitors to
take a stroll, just as Gaudi may have at the
turn of the twentieth century.

CASA MILÀ, COMMONLY KNOWN AS LA
PEDRERA
Casa Milà, commonly known as La Pedrera is
the largest civil building designed by Antoni
Gaudi. The apartment block was constructed
between 1906 and 1910. It was Gaudi's last
work before devoting himself to the
construction of the Sagrada Familia.
Pedro Milà i Camps, a rich businessman was
impressed by the Casa Battló, an
expressionist building designed by Gaudi. He
commissioned Gaudi to construct an
apartment building on a corner site at the
Passeig de Gracia, in the Eixample district
Unconventional:
The result is a less colorful but nevertheless
an even more unconventional building than
the Casa Batlló. It breaks with traditional
architecture by using not a single straight
line. The building does not use load-bearing
walls, but rest on pillars and arches.
Together with the use of steel this allowed
the architect to create completely irregular
floor plans. Even the height of the pillars and
ceilings differ from one to another. In order
to allow light in all the rooms, the
apartments are arranged around two central
courtyards, one circular and the other oval
shaped
La Pedrera:
On the outside, the undulating balconies
look like a series of waves. The iron-wrought
balconies were designed by Josep Maria
Jujol, who improvised on the spot. Some
people see the facade as a cliff-like rock with
caves. During construction, people dubbed it
a quarry, or 'Pedrera'. To date, people still
call the building 'La Pedrera' rather than
'Casa Milà'.
Interior:
The top floor, attic and the extraordinary
roof are open to visitors. The apartment on
the top floor gives an idea of how the
interior must have looked at the beginning
of the 20th century. Just like on the outside,
the interior has virtually no straight lines.
The attractive rooms have a lot of character,
with a mixture of expressionist and Art
Nouveau styles. The attic houses an
exposition of Gaudi's works, with photos
and scale models of his buildings.
Roof Terrace:
The roof is probably the most extraordinary
of the building. It features a number of
surrealistic colorful chimneys. Many of them
look like warriors in a science fiction movie,
others look more frivolous. The roof also
features a bench similar to the one in Park
Guell. From the top of Casa Milà, you have a
nice view over the Eixample district.
Casa Batllo:
The sword of St Georges plunged in his back,
the “Dragon”, la Casa Batllo lays down on
Paseig de Gracia 43 in Eixample district,
heart of Barcelona. Once again, we can
admire the geniality of the Catalan architect,
this house of bone, as some likes to call it, is
also a prestigious piece of the early 20th
century modernism of Barcelona. The
building owned by Josep Batllo I Casanovas,
has been totally remodeled by Antoni Gaudi
between 1904 and 1906. Gaudi expressed its
skills in an organic architecture
characterized by its visceral, skeletal
structure avoiding straight lines like he did
with La Pedrera.

Barri Gotic – Captivating medieval and
Romanesque architecture:
The Barrio Gotic, or Gothic Quarter of
Barcelona, is the city's historic centre,
located within easy reach of Las Ramblas
and stretching as far as the Mediterranean
seafront. Many of its buildings date back to
medieval times, and there are even some
well-preserved Roman walls. The Barri Gotic
is a captivating maze of winding lanes,
opening out onto historic market squares
such as the attractive Placa Sant Jaume,
featuring the old city hall and presidential
palace. On short breaks in Barcelona, you
can explore the area easily on foot and much
of it closed to motorised transport.
Barri Gotic – Explore winding lanes and
market squares:
It is quite easy to lose your bearings along
its twisting cobbled lanes, but this part of its
appeal as there is an abundance of
interesting architecture just waiting to be
discovered during long weekends in
The quarter is a major tourist attraction, and
its most compelling feature is the historic
cathedral which dates back to the 13th
century. It is one of the finest examples of
gothic design in Spain and its central tower
is a fine place to take in breezy views over
the city and coastline
Barri Gotic – A vibrant cafe culture:
The quarter is filled with some lovely
timeless churches such as the Basilica of La
Mercè and the Santa Maria del Pi, boasting a
colourful rose window reputed to be the
largest in the world. On cheap city breaks in
Barcelona, you will discover a hive of
activity in its squares and back streets,
where a myriad of tiny artisan's shops and
market traders rub shoulders with delightful
pavement cafes. Head to the Portal de
L´Angel if trendy designer fashions are your
thing. The Barri Gotic is also one of
Barcelona’s most desirable districts to live in
and has more than its fair share of animated
late night bars and clubs
9
THE HOTEL:
All guests stayed at Hotel Jet in Caldes D’Estrac. A Hotel managed by the Calvet family. It is a
Hotel, in the centre of Caldetes, a town with hot springs, quiet and close to the sea.
We were the only guest so it as our Waves Hotel.
The Turkish team offered a special dinner the 6th so some of the teachers could taste some of
their typical meals and food
The last night we had a farewell dinner at the hotel and some Spanish students decided to
spend the night with all the participants.
THE COMPANY:
ALELLA VINÍCOLA is the first winery that elaborated sparkling wines in D.O. Alella: it is a
Modernist Factory in Alella, 20 km from Barcelona. For nearly two hours we were told the
history of the company and we were shown how the winery worked including all the
processes for making red and white wines. Many of the people who work in the company come
from other countries. Alella Vinicola has given them the opportunity to find a place to live and
work.
We visited:
- The Marfil Museum.
- The Presses Zone.
- The Lab.
- The Winemaking zone.
- The Bottling.
10
BARCELONA CITY HALL
We visited the building which dates from 1831 and its façade is in a Classicist style. The Mayor's office stands out, with paintings by Xavier Nogués, as does the Saló de Cróniques, the Escalera de Honor, with images of important historical figures such as Ausías March and Jacinto Verdaguer, and the Saló del Trentenari. Mr Ramón Sanahuja Director of The Immigration Department in Barcelona gave a speech on the situation of those immigrants who come to Barcelona and the help that is offered to them. All what he explained was really relevant for our project because he focused not only on immigration but on the idea of learning to live together. THE PRESENTATION OF OUR SCHOOL PROJECTS

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The 5th, the film: Students had to opportunity to watch L’Auberge Espagnole
(literally: "the Spanish inn) is a 2002 French film directed and written by Cédric Klapisch. It is about Xavier, an economics graduate student studying for a year in Barcelona, Spain as part of the Erasmus program, where he encounters and learns from a group of students who hail from all over Western Europe.
The film's portrayal is in the first-person perspective of the main character,
Xavier, and is hence mainly narrated in French. Some of the dialogue is in English however, and a significant amount is in Spanish, as well as small amounts in Catalan, Danish, German and Italian.
Watching the film participants were able to understand much better the aim of
our project and saw some of the places that the main character had visited during his stay in Barcelona. The 6th students learnt more about our Twinspace with the help of Laurence Altibelli. The 7th: All posters were shown in the cafeteria, groups walked around listened to
students' explanations and looked at their wonderful posters and at the information
they had prepared from their companies. When we visited the Turkish stand we could
also find a lot information from Elazig we could even taste some food . That was a really
good idea as our next meeting is going to be held there so everybody could have all the
information they wanted about our next journey.
STUCOM has been a Unesco School for more that 10 years. We
have worked in different projects to help those who really need
us.
There are many poor families from different poor. Countries who live close to the school.
Our students and teachers help them to have a better life and to integrate. Again our
project “Waves” is an important tool for all of us.
STUCOM offers the opportunity to work in different companies
to all our students and to those foreign students who visit us .
