CNY 9-Ball Tour / Yorkville, NYby Skip MaloneyLynn Wechsler parlayed a strong start, a single double-hill battle, and a steady set of five more wins to go undefeated at the Central New York 9-Ball Tour stop February 7-8. The $420-added, B-D handicapped event, hosted by Hippo’s House of Billiards in Yorkville, NY drew 47 entrants.After opening with a 7-1 win and surviving a 7-6 struggle versus Ed Yero, Wechsler settled in. He moved among the winners’ side final four and stepped into the hot seat match with a 7-5 win over John McConnell. Rick Manzi defeated Paul Enslin 7-5 to meet him and moved west on the heels of a 7-4 win that left Wechsler in the hot seat.On the one-loss side, Mike Houppert was engaged in a 7-match struggle that would eventually propel him into the finals against Wechsler. After an opening-round bye and a single victory on the winner’s side, Houppert moved west and won his opening two matches there 7-5. His next two wins set him up to meet Enslin. Bruce Carroll waited for McConnell. It was McConnell versus Houppert in the quarterfinals, with Houppert facing and surviving his only hill-hill battle of the tournament. As though he’d seen all he wanted to see of anything resembling a match that close again, he dropped Manzi into third place 7-3 and moved to take on Wechsler.Wechsler wasn’t interested in a prolonged struggle either. Wechsler Wins at Hippos CNY 9 Ball Tour HistoryIn the late summer of 2002 Dick Cappotto (Owner of Cap’s Cue Club), Matty Sidoni and Joe Wysocky purposed a new type of handicapping, entry fee. Six years later we now have a new fee scale, $35.00 “B+” and below, $60.00 for “A’s” $80.00 for “AA’s” and $100.00 for “AAA’s”.Out of each entry $10.00 is for table time, $2.00 is collected for the Year-End Tournament, $3.00 is set aside for an operational fee.B+ and below players have the best of all, as I stated $35.00 - $15.00 from above, ($20.00) $5.00 of each “B+” will go to the B+ player that finishes the highest, of the “B+’s” ($15.00), $3.00 of each “B+” will go to the B+ player that finishes 2nd highest of the “B+’s” ($12.00), $2.00 will be held for the “B+” Year-End Tournament. Ultimate Billiards in Ft Pierce, Fl hosted the $700 added KF Cue Tour Amateur event. The Open event on the previous day drew a record field of 47 players and, as always, the Amateur event went one better by drawing a massive 75 players. The Amateur is proving to be a big suc-cess and is now drawing a large field of Ladies and junior players taking advantage of the big entry fee discounts.Ultimate Billiards also proved itself to be one of the leading rooms in the state of Florida to host an event of this size. With its 20 9 ft pool tables, this made the event run very smooth.Mark Wathen would be the man to take the hotseat on this day, beating George Saunders 6-4, proving why he is a big threat in the Amateur division. Wathen made his way through to his 2nd final of the season. Newcomer Tony Pete was causing problems on the one loss side, having lost to Wathen on the winners side 6-4. Pete battled his way to the finals with a hard fought 5-4 win over Adam Wheeler, followed by a 5-3 win over Ed Kiess, and a 5-2 win over Josh Lewis. He then went on to face Raymond Linares, another player who’s game is rapidly improving. This match would go right down to the wire, with Linares playing strong pool only to fall short in the last game, at 4-4. Linares made a very tough 7 only to leave himself in a worse position on the 8 and hand the match to Pete, leaving Linares in 4th spot. The semi-final would see Pete dominate the match with some fine safety play and left George Saunders kicking at balls the whole match, sending him out in 3rd place.Wathen lost momentum as he sat around for nearly 2 hours waiting for the Final, and it showed, as Pete was gathering momentum on the one loss side. Pete dominated the final, taking advantage of a sluggish Wathen to win the match and his first KF event 8-3. Broumpton went through to the finals undefeated with wins over Johnny Reaves 7-5, Javier Chirino 7-2, Cal Mcgann 7-3, Doug Johnson 7-3, and Curtis Kelley 7-3, putting him up against Eddie Cabrera for the hot seat match. Cabrera was also having a breakout event, beating several of the top players in the field,

including wins over Han Berber 7-5, Gail Grecar 7-1, and Bill Dunsmore to put him up against Broumpton for the hotseat match.This match proved to be a tight affair, with Broumpton edging a 7-4 win to take the hotseat. He would now wait the winner of the one loss side where Josh Lewis was a man on a mission. Lewis had lost his first round match to Prescott Buckwold 7-4, then went on to record 9 very impressive wins beating the likes of Han Berber 7-6, Mike Destefano 7-3, Doug Johnson 7-3, Tony Crosby 7-4, Bill Dunsmore 7-5, Curtis Kelley 7-6 and Eddie Cabrera to put himself in the final, leaving Eddie Cabrera with a fine 3rd place finish.The Finals was all Broumpton. The Blatt Billiards Predator 9-ball Tour kicked off its second stop with an astonishing 108 players at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ this weekend. Seventy nine players showed up for the open on Saturday and twenty nine players competed for the top prize in the second day BCD event.Top players in attendance included Mezz Cues Representative Mika Immonen, Stop #1 winner Ignacio Chavez, George Sansouci, Rob Saez, Shaun Wilkie, Marc Vidal, Jorge Rodriguez, Bobby Blackmore, Oscar Bonilla, Mhet Vergara, Frankie Hernandez, Sean Morgan, Jason Michas, Al Lapena and Tony Robles. Day one action found many of the top players in comfortable positions following the first rounds. Frankie Hernandez was playing strong pool in his first stop of the season with wins over John Lazo 7-1, Holden Chin 7-1 Brian Hunter 7-2 and a tough win against Oscar Bonilla 7-4 to come to day 2 undefeated. Ignacio Chavez was in top form following his stop #1 victory with wins over Dennis Lake 7-0, Michele Li 7-1, Scott Simonietti 7-0, Mhet Vergara 7-5. Chavez finished off day one with a solid win over Rob Saez 7-5 ending day one still undefeated. Tony Robles quickly got into a groove with wins over Borana Andoni 7-2, Randy Schwager 7-4, Damon Sobers 7-1. Robles remained undefeated at the conclusion of day 1 with a strong 7-4 win over Al Lapena. Meanwhile, George “Ginky” Sansouci defeated Raj Vannala 7-0, Chris Lynch 7-2, and Jason Michas 7-2 to also close out day one unscathed.

Mika Immonen started the day in normal form with wins against John Alicea 7-2, Wayne Nicholson 7-3, Jonathan Castillo 7-2 but fell to Seminole Pro Tour player Rob Saez 7-5 and scooted to the one-loss side.

Raphael DaBreo had a terrific weekend defeating Sal Lanuto 7-5 before losing to Bobby Blackmore on the hill 7-6 and starting his tear through the one loss side defeating “Devil” Dave Ascolese 7-6 and a stunning win over Carmen Lombardo 7-6 before falling to Junior Sanchez 7-6. Raphael was the Delta 13 highest finishing C/D player for the event as well as the B-C-D runner up on Sunday. Congratulations Raphael for an excellent weekend of tournament play! Liz Ford continued to play her best against the boys. She defeated Mark Pantovic 7-0, but lost to Damon Sobers 7-5. Unphased,

Ford went on to defeat open player Steve Lillis 7-6 before losing to Randy Schwager 7-2, but still got farther than all the other women in the event to win the Delta 13 highest finishing female for the second tournament in a row. On day two, Ignacio Chavez picked up right where he left off by defeating Frankie Hernandez 9-6 to earn a spot for the hot seat. Tony Robles won a hard fought set against the legendary George “Ginky” Sansouci 9-6 to set up the match against Chavez.In the match against Chavez, Robles took the lead 4-2 early in the match but scratched on three routine shots which ultimately cost him the set 9-6. Now all Robles could do was wait for the winner of Mika Immonen and Jorge Rodriguez.Mika was on a mission on day two and was determined to make it to the finals. He dominated the one loss side with wins over Randy Schwager 7-3 and Mhet Vergara 7-2 to end day one. Mika started the second day by defeating Sean Morgan 9-2, Al Lapena 9-7, Frankie Hernandez 9-0 and Jorge Rodriguez 9-3 for the right to meet Tony in the semifinal.Mika’s break and patterns were in perfect form against Tony as he defeated the Silent Assassin 9-3. Tony stated: “In my opinion, I don’t think that anyone in the world is playing better than Mika right now. He will not beat himself. You have to beat him. And in order to do that, you have to keep pace with him and keep your mistakes to a minimum. “Everyone was excited to watch the final match between these two great warriors. Mika continued to break and run with consistency while Chavez struggled to make a ball on the break and whenever he did, he usually could not see the one ball.Mika dominated the match making few mistakes. He came with his full arsenal and put on a clinic in shot making, position play, kicking, banking and defense to easily win the match by a score of 11-4.The Predator 9-Ball Tour also hosted a second day BCD event. Twenty nine players came out to battle for the top prize. In the bottom half of the chart, Raphael DaBreo was still hot after winning the highest finishing C/D prize in the Open the day before. Raphael started the day with wins over Gary Barnish 5-2, Chris Root 5-1, Paul Raval 5-3 and Eddie Crespo 5-4 to set up a hot seat match against Christian Smith.It was a close match from the beginning but Christian came out on top defeating Raphael 5-3. Meanwhile, Guy Ianuzzi was making everyone pay for his first lost by winning 6 matches in a row to earn a spot against Raphael in the semifinal. Guy ran out of steam and succumbed to Raphael 5-3.In the final race to seven, Christian started strong and Raphael put up a great fight but fell short losing to Christian 7-5. Thanks to Comet Billiards (Bill and Marcia Haley), Pat Fleming, and all the players and spectators who came out to support the tour and Comet Billiards this past weekend.

Leading the bottom have of the bracket Darren Appleton with wins over Dard Aceron 7-1, and Rich Larossa 7-6, Joe Kuligowski 7-0, and marc Vidal 7-1.Playing for the hot seat was Dave Daya VS Darren Appleton this was a good match with Darren Appleton winning easily 7-4, sending Dave Daya to the one lost side. Waiting for Dave Daya on the one lost side was Adam Kielar, this was a great match with Adam Kielar winning on the hill 6-5. In the finals it was Adam Kielar VS Darren Appleton, Adam Kie-lar has to beat Darren Appleton twice to win the tournament. Spring, to thousands of pool players, often means its time to make arrangements for their annual May trip to the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships. It is a time to sharpen those 8-ball and 7’ table skills in preparation for “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World.”At a time when the global economy is in recession, the BCAPL strives to offer an avenue where players can compete and enjoy the sport they love without excessive costs and the opportunity to win cash back at every level. Via the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championship,

the State Tournament Added Money Program (STAMP), and the production of well regarded

independent events such as the Jay Swanson Memorial and the U.S Bar Table Championships C u e S p o r t s

International (CSI) gives approximately $200,000 to players in added money annually.It is this love of the sport and the pool community that drives Mark Griffin and his team at CSI. For his contribution Griffin was named Man of

the Year in the 13th Annual BD Awards in the February issue of Billiards Digest. In 2004 the BCA Pool League was sold to Griffin who has been in the industry for over 30 years. During his first 4 years of ownership, league membership has risen 16% between 2004 and 2008. Growth in the number of leagues around the country continues into 2009.The mission statement for CSI is “To create and improve opportunities for all players of all abilities through fair governance and equitable policies.” This is more than just words for team CSI, it is a way of life

Ralf Souquet never tasted defeat at the Turning Stone resort in Verona NY as he showed why he is the number one ranked player in the world and the AZB Player of the Year. His flawless shotmaking and supernatural safety play left opponents no air to breathe and even the acknowledged greats of the

game completely floundered when they faced him.As an example of his power just take a look at what happened when he played Mika Immonen. Immonen is rightly acknowledged as one of the finest pool players the game has ever seen and he has been on a hot streak for well over a year. He is a former World 9-Ball Champion (2001) and he has gotten better since he won that title. At this event he destroyed two other World Champions without ever straining his cue. He demolished the current World Ten Ball Champion, Darren Appleton, 9-1. Then he took on another former World 9-Ball Champion, Thorsten Hohmann. Thorsten never stood a chance. Immonen simply never gave him any opportunities and dominated the match to win 9-3.

But when Immonen went up against Souquet it was as if a flower were challenging a howitzer. Immonnen barely rose from his chair the entire match as Ralf strung

together 9-ball after 9-ball. Souquet melted the Iceman 9-1 and never looked like he was even concerned about the outcome. He made it look easy. He did that all week. Shane Van B e e n i n g fell to him 9-4, and when he faced off a g a i n s t the local f a v o r i t e ,

Dennis Hatch, in the finals he was going up against the man who had been breaking the best of anyone on the particular table on which they played. Hatch did better than most, but in the end he asked Ralf to "put me out of my misery". Ralf complied by running the last rack and winning the championship with the 13-7 win over Hatch. A very special AZB tip of the hat goes to Simonis Cloth.

Friday the 13th is often viewed as unlucky. In fact there is a scientific name for the fear of that day - Paraskevidekatriaphobia. However, for Brandon Shuff and CueSports International (CSI) it was a successful day and weekend.February 13-15, 2009 in the elegant Grand ballroom at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas the new CSI division, the National Championship Series (NCS), launched its inaugural tournament; the NCS 8-Ball National Championship. CSI is also the parent company of the BCA Pool League and produces the U.S Bar Table Championship and the Jay Swanson Memorial.Fifty-six top players traveled from all over the country to compete for the $28,000 prize fund and the opportunity to become the first open U.S 8-Ball National Champion. The participants qualified to play in the event by winning a spot at qualifier tournaments in host pool rooms all over the country. The NCS is open to all men, women, amateur and professional U.S players.Tournament Directors, Bill Stock and Ken Shuman,

The Action Report (TAR) streamed the tournament from its feature table and had several guest commentators throughout the three day event such as: OB Cues owner Royce Bunnell; Director, Writer and Actor of Pool Hall Junkies Mars Callahan; international and well regarded pool commentator and event producer Jay Helfert and CSI owner and 2008 Billiards Digest Man of the Year Mark Griffin.The players were supplied with top of the line equipment; sixteen 9’ Diamond Pro-Ams, Super Aramith Pro balls, Red Circle cue balls and the DELTA-13

Some notable players who participated were Mike Davis who has played in several world championships, has been a member of the U.S Mosconi Cup Team and is the 2009 Reno Open winner; Professional player “Mad Max” Eberle; young pool phenoms such as multiple Junior National Champion Austin Murphy, 2009 Jay Swanson Memorial winner Mitch Ellerman, Brandon Shuff who is a dominant force in the Mid-Atlantic region and New Mexico heavy hitter Nick Tafoya. The tournament was also well represented by a more mature contingency of top players such as Bobby Hunter, Sal Butera and 4th Place finisher Walter Glass to name a few.After a grueling first two days, the top six players returned Sunday morning: Redgie Cutler, John Doherty, Walter Glass, Austin Murphy, Jui Lung Chen and Brandon Shuff. By the third round at 4 pm, the field was whittled down to Austin Murphy, Jui Lung Chen and Brandon Shuff. Each player has an impressive resume and all are considered a force in their respective parts of the country and well known for their skills and determination.Chen has been rolling over players in Texas for years on the Fast Eddies Tour. Shuff is multi- faceted and is as adept at One-Pocket and 9-Ball as he is in 8-Ball. He has long been considered one of the players to beat on the Tiger Tour and in 2008 won the Maryland State One-Pocket Championship. Long, lanky and well over 6’2”, Austin Murphy and the word ‘prodigy’ have been used together. Murphy cashed in his first Reno Open in 2004 and at age 11 was the youngest player to win the 14 and under division of the Junior National Championship. In 2007 he placed 9th in the World Summit of Pool. Quite a list of accomplishments for any player; even more so when you consider that Murphy will turn 16 years old July 2009.Over the course of the three day event, hundreds of spectators enjoyed

the talent displayed by the players. The finals pitted Shuff vs. Chen. It was evident that fatigue was beginning to set in. While there were moments of miscues and occasional missed shots, their talent none the less was evident. In front of 120+ spectators and thousands via the TAR live stream both players were determined to be the first to 13 games. After the two and a half hour match it was Shuff who prevailed beating Chen 13-11.As the 2009 NCS 8-Ball National Champion, Shuff took home a total prize package valued at over $6800, including a new #408 cue by OB Cues, a custom engraved DELTA-13 Rack and a custom solid crystal trophy by Crown Trophy in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to the excellent play a complimentary drawing took place where two prizes were won by two lucky spectators. OB Cues donated a new OB Breakcue and Hustlin USA donated a canvas and corduroy

Hustlin Work Jacket.The NCS will next schedule and soon release the 9-Ball, 10-Ball and 14.1 NCS National Championship locations and dates. On Sunday, January 11th, twelve feet of history was disassembled and taken out of Rack ‘Em Billiards in Aurora, Colorado. The 100+ year old 12-foot snooker table was a staple in the back corner of the pool room for 15 years. It was the only 12-foot snooker table around and on occasion would find itself occupied with a classic game of golf. Sadly, the desire for snooker or golf has dwindled.On the day they were removing the table, Larry S. said, “I brought my friend all the way here just to show him this table and to play on it, but now it’s too late.” Unfortunately for Larry, they were already breaking it

down. If you’ve ever been to Rack ‘Em, I’m sure you can recall memories of seeing or playing on the colossal table.

I was originally told that the table was built in 1891. While researching this story, I was later informed that it was from the 1870’s. That was when the American billiard games as we know them today were officially played on a table with six pockets. Rack ‘Em Billiard’s original owner, Rich, acquired the table when he opened the place in 1983. This 5-piece state table even came with extra long pool cues and bridges.In its place, we can now find two 9-foot Diamond tables. One of which is a nearly new Diamond Pro-Am. This is the same table that’s used at the US Open, Derby City Classic, and most other professional events. This table will also be used as the feature and finals table for all upcoming big table tournaments at Rack ‘Em.Lastly, Rack ‘Em Billiards has also joined the world of live streaming. Live streaming has become the future of watching pool. Matches held on the feature Diamond Pro-Am table were streamed all day during the recent NCS qualifier. Viewers at home can go to: Ustream.tv and search “RACK EM BILLIARDS” to see the streaming or watch the pre-recorded matches.Sean Meade, owner of Rack ‘Em, plans to continue promoting pool with more big tournaments, leagues, and occasional pool clinics. “We’re very proud to be the first pool room in Colorado to offer live streaming. If you diligently practiced the ideas in my last two columns, your banking game should be much improved. Here are two bank shots that can be offered as propositions or just used to work on your control of the angle of the object ball off a cushion.I first saw Shot A at a US Open where several of the top players were discussing it. The setup is fairly simple: the cue ball goes on the spot and the object ball is placed exactly one ball off the cushion at the diamond. The goal is to bank the object ball cross-side. The problem is that if you don’t do something special, the shot will double kiss. The main decision for the shooter is whether the cue ball will cross the path of the object ball. Move the object ball one ball up or down the table and the choice of “cross or not cross?” is easy. Right by the diamond is a problem. Shot B is an answer to those skeptics who think side spin cannot be transferred from the cue ball to the object ball. The ball to be banked goes on the spot. A blocker ball goes on the short cushion exactly where the first ball would like to hit for a long bank back to the corner pocket. The blocker’s position is roughly as shown, but a few test shots should let you find the spot within a quarter-inch or so. Note where the ball is inrelation to the diamond once you have the spot as you will probably have to respot the blocker several times. The challenge is to bank the object ball off the spot hitting to each side of the blocker. The cue ball must be placed straight in line with the shot for each try.Whether these shots can be made easily depends somewhat on the

condition of the equipment. Changing from old, sticky cloth on the cushions to new, slippery cloth will change how any side spin on the ball grabs. New bed cloth will change how the banked ball arcs as it leaves the cushion due to any follow it may have. In the case of Shot B, the condition of the balls is important. I’ve seen newly-polished balls that were so sticky due to the kind of polish used that you could put up two blocker balls and still have margin to bank the object ball to either side. Although the economy affected our membership and our prize pay-outs throughout the year, we managed to finish another wonderful season promoting women in billiards.It is with much regret that we inform you that the Ladies Spirit Tour probably will hold a shorter 2009 season. As you are well aware, the sluggish economy has caused a great depletion in the fun-time funds of players, as well as the discretionary spending of our sponsors and poolroom owners. Many of our players cannot afford to travel the state to attend the various events and our event sponsors are also struggling with the crippling effect of the poor economy.Our hope is to make this just a short break and to begin again later this year or in the year 2010. The United States Snooker Association (USSA) continues to rejuvenate snooker in the United States in 2009 with its inaugural USSA National Snooker Tour, and the third stop on the Tour at the Prince Snooker Club, directed by USSA member Raymond Fong- in Brook lyn, NY, February 7-8, enjoyed a full sixteen-player field. Four round-robin preliminary flights determined the eight players for the final rounds. The preliminary flights featured 3-frame matches among each opponent within a flight for a total of nine frames played per player. Brooklynites dominated the prelims, as locals Henry Wong, Jian Qiang Wong, Raymond Fung and Kevin Wong all recorded undefeated 3-0 records. Ahmad Ali (Brooklyn, NY) claimed overall high run honors in the quarterfinals with a break of 64. The top 2 in each flight moved forward to the single-elimination quar-ter finals, where Henry Wong defeated Tour stop #1 winner Jeff Szafran-sky 3-0 [60(44)-32,58-13,53-33]; Ahmad Ali out stroked Kevin Wong 3-0 [89(64)-15,56-27,81(41)-3]; Raymond Fung eliminated Nelson Chan 3-1 [48-62(30),53-42,59(32)-11,56-22]; and Jian Qiang Wang eclipsed Gary Cheung 3-2 [62-25,80-47,26-55,23-61,73-31].The semifinals saw both Henry Wong and Raymond Fung continue their momentums with only one loss frame between them: Fung dominating Jian Qiang Wang 3-0 [64(36) -12,55-22,81(42)-0] and Wong ousting Ahmad Ali 3-1 [30-73,60-30,59-33,71-10].Henry Wong put up a good fight in the finals, but Raymond Fung contin-ued his dominating play to capture the Stop #3 title over Wong by a 4-1 margin [44-48,53-36,60(36)-22,70-57,72-55].

The Blatt Billiards Predator 9-ball Tour kicked off its second stop with an astonishing 108 players at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ this weekend. Seventy nine players showed up for the open on Saturday and twenty nine

players competed for the top prize in the second day BCD event.Top players in attendance included Mezz Cues Representative Mika Immonen, Stop #1 winner Ignacio Chavez, George Sansouci, Rob Saez, Shaun Wilkie, Marc Vidal, Jorge Rodriguez, Bobby Blackmore, Oscar Bonilla, Mhet Vergara, Frankie Hernandez, Sean Morgan, Jason Michas, Al Lapena and Tony Robles. Liz Ford continued to play her best against the boys. She defeated Mark Pantovic 7-0, but lost to Damon Sobers 7-5. Unphased, Ford went on to defeat open player Steve Lillis 7-6 before losing to Randy Schwager 7-2, but still got farther than all the other women in the event to win the Delta 13 highest finishing female for the second tournament in a row. Tony Robles won a hard fought set against the legendary George “Ginky” Sansouci 9-6 to set up the match against Chavez.Mika was on a mission on day two and was determined to make it to the finals. He dominated the one loss side with wins over Randy Schwager 7-3 and Mhet Vergara 7-2 to end day one. Mika started the second day by defeating Sean Morgan 9-2, Al Lapena 9-7, Frankie Hernandez 9-0 and Jorge Rodriguez 9-3 for the right to meet Tony in the semifinal.Everyone was excited to watch the final match between these two great warriors. Mika continued to break and run with consistency while Chavez struggled to make a ball on the break and whenever he did, he usually could not see the one ball.Mika dominated the match making few mistakes. He came with his full arsenal and put on a clinic in shot making, position play, kicking, banking and defense to easily win the match by a score of 11-4.The Predator 9-Ball Tour also hosted a second day BCD event. Twenty nine players came out to battle for the top prize. Christian Smith took care of business in the top of the chart to earn his spot for the hot seat with wins over Guy Ianuzzi 5-0, Scott Abramowitz 5-2, Dave Fitzpatrick 5-3 and Michael Esposito 5-3.In the bottom half of the chart, Raphael DaBreo was still hot after winning the highest finishing C/D prize in the Open the day before. Raphael started the day with wins over Gary Barnish 5-2, Chris Root 5-1, Paul Raval 5-3 and Eddie Crespo 5-4 to set up a hot seat match against Christian Smith.It was a close match from the beginning but Christian came out on top defeating Raphael 5-3. Meanwhile, Guy Ianuzzi was making everyone pay for his first lost by winning 6 matches in a row to earn a spot against Raphael in the semifinal. Guy ran out of steam and succumbed to Raphael 5-3.In the final race to seven, Christian started strong and Raphael put up a great fight but fell short losing to Christian 7-5. Thanks to Comet Billiards (Bill and Marcia Haley), Pat Fleming, and all the players and spectators who came out to support the tour and Comet Billiards this past weekend.

By KBP StaffThe first stop of the 2009 KBP Tour was hosted by Strokers Billiards in Palm Harbor, Florida on Sunday January 25, 2009. The competition was fierce but Albert Howe came out on top. Howe, who has played on the tour for years past is the 1st winner for this season of events.Howe had a great run in the competition but as the hot seat loomed forward Dan Whitten was making his mark and being favored as the one that would go to the end. Whitten was not letting any of his opponents off easy as none got past two games until Howe returned the favor and beat Whitten 7-2. Jarred Schlauch was waiting patiently to see who he would have to play against for a chance at the finals. Schlauch soon was facing Whitten and the determined Schlauch left Whitten in 3rd place with a 7-5 score. Schlauch was then headed for the final race to 9 match against Howe.Schlauch and Howe started their match and Howe was dominating the table jumping ahead with a 7-2 lead. Howe was a little rattled with a hit disagreement which was ruled in Howe’s favor and this gave way for determined Schlauch to bring the score to an even 7-7. Howe got another chance to go forward taking the next game putting him on the hill. Howe’s last game was on the edge as he almost hung the five ball but after a few seconds the ball dropped and Howe finished out the rack for the Win.

Over the years it has been a big discussion in our world of pool and billiards as to who is an amateur. The debate has always been, ever since the PBT who was our ranking source in the earlier years went caflouk (hey I know this isn’t a real word), if you win money are you still an amateur? Many have said yes while others have said no. With this in mind I used a Webster’s Dictionary that my Dad had at his home. The Dictionary definition of an amateur is one who cultivates a particular activity for the love of it and not for professional gain. Thinking about this definition it makes up for about 75% of people who play pool in tournaments and other events. Just because they win a few games does not make them any less of an amateur. This has always been a big issue with our society.You have to realize that most players are happy and content with playing on tours and in local events. They play frequently but they do not plan on going professional. These are the players that just enjoy and love the game. Should these players be punished for getting better at a sport they love? Face it, by playing in events when they can afford to and practicing their game will get better……Hopefully.With this information we have to go forward in the Billiard World and set up standards, which most sports do have. The problem with this is that while

Amateur’s Worldmany other sports have standards that can be agreed upon, Billiards does not. We have a society that cannot get it together. No matter who tries to set the standard there will be disagreements. There should be a way to be able to set a system up that all can agree upon. Several have tried but it has always failed. Now the question is where do we go from here and how do we do it to make our sport, the sport we all love, better?

She leaves behind her daughter Kay Higgins, Kingsland, GA, son Morris Lary, Jacksonville, FL, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
