Corey is back! After conquering a tough field in last months tournament, Deuel has put to rest any arguments that he isn’t at his best. Winning his second tournament in a row, Corey is making a huge charge for the season’s point lead. Currently he finds himself in second

position behind Mike Davis. Mike, after this event, clings to a 5 point lead. “The Prince of Pool” put on some serious displays of shot making and safety play. His overall table management was representative of his world class status. The first half of the tournament, Corey went straight through his opponents like a hot knife through butter; demolishing all comers including Earl Strickland 7-2 and Mike Davis 8-3. Not until North Carolina’s Mike Fuller stopped him dead in his tracks. Mike Fuller showed a really impressive game this weekend. Playing in his first Seminole Pro Tour

event, Fuller had no shortage of opportunities to prove himself against the tour’s established players. The Roxborough native had strong wins against Han Berber 7-4, John DiToro 7-2, and Stevie Moore 8-4. Next on his hit-list was none other than Corey Deuel. Fuller really showed some nerve in this match. Corey seemed to struggle on the break, and Mike really punished him for it. Bringing his big break into play, Fuller would overcome Deuel in a hill-hill thriller. Next up for Fuller was the hot-seat match against Manny Chau. Both players played tight all the way down to the end. However, after Chau missed a tough blind back-cut on the 7 into the side pocket, Mike took a critical lead at 7-6. Mike Fuller would win the next game as well and capture the hot seat. The Seminole Pro Tour would like to thank Bucky and Mike, as well as the staff of Fast Eddie’s Billiards for hosting such a great event. Their classic style setup is a must see for any pool fan. Our next stop takes us back to the sunshine state, to Cape Coral Florida’s Diamond Billiards. This event was incredibly popular last year and will undoubtedly be so again. Sean Davis plowed an undefeated path through the Great Southern Billiard Tour field the weekend of July 25-26. The $1,500-added A/B amateur event, held at Speakeazy Billiards in Sanford, NC, drew 74 tough competitors. B-ranked Davis found himself in the hot seat match following a hill-hill match with B-ranked Brad Shearer. Meeting him there was AA-ranked Sam Monday, who’d just sent B-ranked J.R. Poste to the left side of the bracket 11-5. Getting off to a 4-1 lead, Monday seemed the likely winner, but Davis battled back, tying it at six and at seven to win the match while Monday, who was going to 11, still needed four games. Poste moved on to the quarterfinals against Crouch, who’d come out on top of a hill-hill match with Shearer. Crouch didn’t allow Poste as many games, though, holding him to four and moving on to the semifinals against Monday. After making five balls on the break in rack nine, Monday ran out to make it 5-4 and didn’t let Crouch back in, finishing up 11-4 to get back to Davis. In the true double-elimination final match,

Monday got off to a 2-0 lead, but Davis tied it at two, at three, and, after Monday’s unlikely miss on a 9 ball, at four. Monday got it to 6-4, but that’s where he stopped. Davis took rack 11, making it 6-5, and made it 6-6 after Monday missed the 1 ball in rack 12. Davis’ controlled and powerful break put three balls in the pockets in the final rack, opening up the table for game, set, match, and tournament.

Gate City Billiards Club is holding another benefit tournament, this time for the American Cancer Society. Todd Nelson, a local player and good friend of Earl Strickland, lost his mother to cancer recently. I decided to combine Todd’s love of pool and his love for his mother by holding a tournament benefiting cancer research. Gate City Billiards Club was proud to be the host location. The tournament is August 29th at 2:00pm, registration will begin at 12:00. The entry fee for the tournament will be $50 with $20 of each entry going to The American Cancer Society. It will be double elimination with a race to 7 on the winners side and a race to 5 on the losers side. The field will be limited to 32 players. There is an exciting twist to this tournament. First place will win a spot in this year’s U.S. Open 9-ball tournament in October. This is being paid for through $100 generous donations from:

• Barry Behrman (Founder of the U.S. Open)• Don Liebes and Jana Wagenseller (Owners of Gate City Billiards

Club)• Bar 40 Night Club in Greensboro• Dobros Pizza and Grill• James Brady (VIP Customer at Gate City Billiards Club)• John Craig (yours truly, pool player and friend of Todd Nelson)

There will also be extra drink specials, contests, prizes, raffles and auctions during this event all to benefit the cause. Because of the U.S. Open prize, we are expecting some of the area’s best pool players. Even if you decide not to enter the tournament, come by to watch some very good pool and to support a very good cause.

Adam Wheeler chose to earn his first KF Cues 9-Ball Tour Open win on the last regular stop of the season. Wheeler went undefeated through the field of 41 who arrived at Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, FL, for the $1,000 added event July 25, while Albert Howe took first in the 62-entrant $ 7 0 0 - a d d e d amateur event July 26. Wheeler followed up a 9-1 blowout over Jerry Calderon with a hill-hill win over Manny Chau to gain the hot seat, while on the one-loss side, Charlie Williams ousted Mike Delawder 7-3, tournament director Tony Crosby 7-3, and Jeff Hughes 7-2 to land in the one-loss quarterfinals with Calderon. Calderon, coming off of a hill-hill win over Prescott Buckwold, held Williams to just two games and moved on to the one-loss semifinals against Chau. In the final set, Wheeler got off to a strong 5-1 lead, forcing Chau to try to make a comeback. In the amateur event on Sunday, Howe was fighting for the win plus Player of the Year honors, which would yield him $500 and

a custom KF Cue. A win in the winners’ side final four would give him the title, and he got it, sending Jimmy Sandaler west 7-3. In the single race-to-8 final match, Howe truly played the part of Player of the Year, working the

racks even better than he had all day, and he took first

with an 8-2 win. The top non-cashing lady finisher, Samantha Huber, earned $50. Though second in points (leader Crosby, as KF Cues Tour director, is ineligible), earning Player of the Year in the open division was Julio Aquino, who, like Howe,

earned $500 and a custom KF Cue. Second and third place finishers The season finales for both divisions will be held at Strokers Billiards II in Tampa, FL. The $2,500-added minimum amateur finale, the Florida State Amateur 9-Ball Championships, will be held August 29-30, while the $2,500-added minimum open finale, the Florida State Open 9-Ball Championships, will be held September 5-6. A Bad Plan is Better than No PlanAugust 2009 page 7

By Bob Jewett

In my last column, I gave the answer to the stop shot puzzle from two columns ago. Two readers, Matt Hiatt and Bryce Leong turned in answers too late to acknowledge last time. Both found the solution using stripes.

Playing a stop shot is the simplest way to play position because if you get the stroke right, the cue ball will end in an exact position. As long as that’s where you want the cue ball to be, you’re set. Because of the physics involved, it’s much easier to get a stop shot right within say half a ball than it is to get a partial follow or draw shot right within the same margin for say two balls of forward or backward movement. (See my column from October 2007 for a drill for precision slight follow/draw shots.) There is a hidden danger with stop shots, though, and that is throw. Of course since a stop shot is by definition a straight in shot, you don’t get “collision induced throw” which happens when the cue ball rubs across a ball during a cut shot. Instead you risk getting throw due to unintended side spin on the cue ball. It turns out that left or right side spin on the cue ball is most effective in throwing the object ball (to the right or left, respectively) when the cue ball has no draw or follow at theinstant of contact. Think of which way the surface of the cue ball will be rubbing across the face of the object ball. With only side spin, the cue ball will be rubbing left or right while if there is also draw or follow, the rub will be at an angle and the left or right will be diluted. This means that unintended throw due to unintended spin is most dangerous on a stop shot. You need to make sure you don’t fall into this trap. In the diagram are two drills that will move you closer to perfection. Both of these use a stripe as the cue ball so that you can see whether you have side spin on the cue ball. If you have one of those practice cue balls with a stripe around it, that will be even better. In Shot A, the goal is simply to shoot a stop shot into the side pocket. The cue ball should not go forward or back after hitting the object ball-- you’re shooting a stop shot -- but more importantly, the stripe should remain vertical and “pointed” along the line of the shot. Shoot the shot from the same position each time, and gradually increase the speed of the shot. How hard can you hit the shot and still kill the cue ball and leave the stripe in place? In Shot B, the cue ball starts behind the line and the shot is straight to a corner pocket. Start with the object ball one diamond over the line. Again the goal is to stop the cue ball dead with the stripe right. This shot is varied by moving the object ball away from the line towards the pocket. If you have trouble keeping spin off the cue ball, here are some suggestions. Get a friend to tell you whether you are lining up in the middle of the cue ball -- many people have trouble seeing the center due to eye alignment. Address the cue ball low and check the reflection of your stick in the surface of the cue ball, which needs to be shiny. Does the reflection point straight back at you? Finally, try watching the cue stick rather than the cue ball or object ball on the final stroke -- make sure you are coming straight through the ball.

I don’t even need to explain the title of this article because I’m sure you know exactly what I’m referring to. When we don’t decide what we want to accomplish or if we don’t fully commit to the outcome, it is more likely that we’ll miss or get bad position. How can we expect to achieve something when we don’t even know what we’re trying to achieve? How many times have you played position for “oh, somewhere in the middle of the table,” and ended up with a bank shot, the cue ball frozen to the rail with a tester, or even hooked behind the only possible ball on the table? If you have no idea where you’re going, chances are you‘ll get there. What is a bad plan? A bad plan is a bad decision. Maybe you chose the wrong pattern and were left snookered on your last ball. Perhaps you’re playing 8-ball and you carelessly got too straight on your key ball. Now you have to find a way to get through traffic back to the other end of the table for the 8. These are all examples of poor decisions. In these instances, you had a bad plan. Regardless of how your bad plan occurred, if you address a shot with no plan whatsoever, you’re just as doomed from the beginning. Even the most beginner player that has yet to learn cue ball control has a plan. Their plan: Make the ball. Make the ball. Make the ball. They may not play perfect patterns, but if their alignment and mechanics are sound, they will most likely pocket the ball. Once they discover rails and English, they graduate from simply making the ball to also controlling the cue ball. Their new plan becomes: Make the ball and draw the cue ball three diamonds. Whatever position is required of the cue ball, this new element now becomes part of their plan. The point is that there is a plan. At a certain level, our abilities have strengthened and the challenge becomes putting it all together in a good plan. We know where to aim and what speed we should use to accomplish what we want. The part we often neglect is to develop a plan that takes advantage of all our current skills. Having a plan means that BEFORE we get down and address the cue ball, we make a decision on exactly what we would like to see happen. We’ll do our best to make it happen, but the only way to give ourselves the best chance is to have a full plan of attack, regardless if the plan is good or bad. You may think, “Let’s just make this ball and see what happens” is a plan, but it’s actually no plan at all. Establish a plan and give yourself the best chance at the shot. Commit your mind to the full picture. If it’s a bad plan, embrace it and have a better plan next time. Having no plan teaches us nothing.

19th Annual VNEA Junior Championshipsby: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

The 19th Annual VNEA Junior National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska started on Friday June 26, 2009 and ran through the weekend. The event was held at the Pershing

Center in the heart of downtown Lincoln. I was impressed with the set up once we walked onto the tournament floor. The pool tables occupied the entire floor space with stadium bleacher seating lining each side. Everyone had a great view of what was happening on the floor. Besides the main tournament floor, the lower level had pool tables set up and play was happening there as well. The VNEA brought in over 100 pool tables, hosted over 400 junior pool players from over 30 Charters from the United States

and Canada. The Pershing Center is set up to hold sports events of all kinds complete with refreshment stands which seemed to do a lot of business with hungry teenagers playing pool

all weekend. There were 3 divisions of play, Youth (9-13), Minors (14-17) and Majors (18-20) for both Singles and Teams.First up for OTBnTV to film on Friday evening was the Singles Finals in the Boys and Girls

divisions, play continued on Saturday and Sunday as OTBNTV filmed. After the tournament ended Friday night, we walked back to our hotel, the Cornhusker Marriott (host hotel), and enjoyed a typical Midwest Friday night downtown. We saw people walking the streets, sitting at sidewalk cafes, couples hand-in-hand enjoying the beautiful but humid evening that brought back memories of a small town, no matter how large. What a treat for myself and co-host Ed Borgia from Erie, Pennsylvania to be able to commentate on the play of these talented juniors. Kids ranging in age from 9-20, that executed their game during the finals of the Junior World Championships. They shot with knowledge, perception but most of all confidence. I was impressed but sorry to say surprised at their abilities. I never thought that

Kayli Dabicci (MI)

Billy Thorpe (OH)

these juniors could play so well. OTBnTV was their to film all the action and you can view their matches online at www.rackemmag.com/2009VNEAJuniors.htm You too will be impressed. For those people in the billiard industry that believe pool is in trouble, let me categorically state, “No we are not”. If this is any example,

these juniors acted like ladies and gentlemen with respect for each other and the game. I was proud to be there and watch them play. There were runouts, safeties and table length shots that would make the average league player envious. What struck me most unusual for a league player was the courtesy and respect they had for the other player when they lost. Don’t misunderstand me, they weren’t happy about it but they weren’t throwing fits, pouting, throwing their cues around or anything that you might see on any league night. These kids acted like professionals should.Final results are available at www.vnea.com

What’s Happening in the Little Wooden Shed

In July, we drove out to Marietta, GA to display some of our cues at the Southern Cue and Case Show that was held in conjunction with the Gem City 10 Ball Classic. The event was a great success, with many top players, cuemakers, case makers, etc.. We enjoyed meeting everyone. We plan to be a part of next year’s show, as well. We are adding a couple of new pages to our website. One is for our customers who want to show off their Crown Cues and share their stories. The other is a sort of index with pics and links to artistic poolers who would like to be easily located in one place. Look for these pages to be added in August. If you would like to know more, and/or be listed, write [email protected] Cues Aug. - Sept. Events:During the whole month of August, we will be offering 15% Off all cues, including custom orders, during our annual Summer Melt Down Sale! Check it out!

Mike Gasper WinsThe twelveth annual Tri-State Tour Invitational took place July 11 - 12, 2009, at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ bringing together highly skilled amateurs hoping to sharpen their game en route to the pro circuit and ambitious upstarts looking to advance in class. The weekend was a huge success with 14 A & A+ Players, 32 B & B+ Players, 32 C & C+ Players and 14 D & D+ Players showing up to play in their respective classes. Comet Billiards owners Bill Haley along with the staff were gracious hosts and provided a professional and engaging atmosphere for the event. In the finals Mike saw all those great rolls disappear as Mike Gasper tore through the 4 –game handicap in no time to bring the match to 4-4 quickly. In the next 8

games Mike Poisler tried as best as he could to find opportunities to win games but in the end Mike Gasper’s continued excellent play overcame all obstacles and Mike Gasper won the match 9-7 and crowned himself the 2008-2009 Invitational Grand Champion.

The NEWPT hosted their third event of the season on July 26th. We would like to thank The Fan Club in East Wareham, MA for their hospitality and generosity in hosting the New England Women’s 9 Ball Tour. We had one new player, Karen Morrow, make the drive on the rainy Sunday morning to Cape Cod. It was great to see a new face on the tour! Now for the results: Liz Taylor is on fire! She is unstoppable, winning her 3rd straight NEWPT event. Although this time she took the difficult route after losing her second match of the day to Bonnie Saritelli, she fought her way through the loser’s bracket, defeating Jolie Brancaccio, Debra Nicoll, Nicole Netherland, Stacie Bourbeau, Norma Corneau, and Janet Tycks, to yet again reach the final match in her third consecutive tournament. Meanwhile, Candi Rego waited

patiently in the hot seat for her opponent, after defeating Stacie Bourbeau, Debra Nicoll, Linda Morton, and Janet Tycks. In the final match of the day, Liz Taylor proved that she was not going to back down after playing eight matches to get to the finals. Liz defeated Candi Rego 9-3, in this modified final match, to become the tournament champion and remain as the current points leader. Congratulations Liz! Also, congratulations to Janet Tycks for her outstanding performance and highest finish so far on the NEWPT, placing 3rd. The next tournament for the NEWPT, will be a qualifier on August 16th, at Corner Pocket in Johnston, RI. This qualifier is made possible by a donation of a cue by Cue-Tec and Imperial International. We thank them for their generous contribution. Check out our website, www.newomenstour.com, for more information.
