Congratulations to staff and students who made our
athletics carnival a success, even though the weather
was threatening to interfere with the events. Year 7
students must be commended for their commitment
to excel in all areas of athletics. Well done too, to
our talented runners and students across all years
who will now represent our school at the regional
carnival. Year 12 students, dressed in 'tight or bright'
enjoyed their final carnival and were narrowly
defeated by the teachers in their final race (...or so
the story goes)!
Last week, two of our Early Career teachers were
presented with their Certificate of Accreditation.
Congratulations to Ms Fleming and Mr Roberts who
are outstanding young teachers with a wonderful
future ahead of them. They are both hard working
teachers, committed to make what they do matter. I
am very proud to welcome them into our profession
and very happy to have them teaching at our school.
Parents may remember participating in the Tell Them
From Me survey, last year, which, along with student
and staff responses was used to inform the school
priorities. This year, the first phase of this survey has
already been administered. 719 students have
participated in the survey. So far, we have found that
students at Woolooware High School are socially
engaged and actively involved in the life of the
school; their friends are here, they have a positive
sense of belonging, positive friendships and high
participation in sports and extra curricular activities.
Our students also have higher attendance and
positive behaviour than the NSW Govt norm, and
believe they are appropriately challenged at school.
We will continue to monitor student engagement,
wellness and aspects of learning so as to continue to
support improved outcomes for all of our students.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
our Debating Teams who are competing in a number
of competitions at the moment, with continued
success. Well done, to our Year 7 & 8 teams which
defeated Endeavour Sports HS last week in the
Premier's Debating Challenge, and our Year 11 team
which defeated Kirrawee HS.
Our Year 10 students will have the opportunity to
participate in 'A taste of Year 11' over the next few
weeks. They will be able to visit senior classes and
investigate what different senior courses are about.
Ms Bunting (YA) has indicated that many students
are looking forward to investigating their options and
feel that they will be better informed to make subject
selection choices for their future studies.
Mr Monahan (YA), Mr Murphy (HT) and a number
of other staff enjoyed a 'night in' with Year 12 this
term. Students played games, ate pizza and had fun
in our multipurpose school hall. Sleeping bags,
lollies and chips (and a visit from the resident
possum) made for a good night. Thank you to all of
the staff involved in supporting our students. Year 12
students have also been 'buddied up' with a teacher
mentor to support them in their final terms at school.
Their teacher mentor can be approached to reinforce
study strategies, help them with managing homework
and progressing with assessment tasks as well as
general good health and wellbeing. Thank you to
Ms Hennessy (YA) for setting up and managing this
program.
We wish Year 12 well in their Trial HSC
examinations.

GREAT BARRIER REEF - YEAR 10 MARINE STUDIES
An early departure of 6am from the school bus bay to
the domestic airport was the start of a wonderful
excursion for 36 students and 5 teachers.
Saturday, May 7 and we boarded the Virgin Australia
flight to Cairns. In flight for three hours and we finally
arrived in Cairns to a humid and overcast sky. We
claimed our baggage and enjoyed lunch at the airport
before boarding the coach to Huntleys Crocodile Farm.
The crocodiles are a scary proposition in their natural
habitat. We enjoyed a boat cruise and witnessed feeding
the crocs from a pole over the side of the boat. The
crocodile feeding show was conducted by a real life
“Crocodile Dundee”. He was hilarious and entertained
the crowd with his humour. A great start to the
excursion!
The coach trip back to Cairns was scenic and our driver
provided commentary on local landmarks and sights.
We arrived at Northern Greenhouse Hostel and settled
into our rooms before walking to the lagoon pool for a
swim. Dinner was at Outback Jacks followed by a walk
through the night markets.
Sunday, May 8 was a very early rise at 5.30am with
departure at 6.30am by bus to the Tully River. This was
going to be a day to remember! We travelled for
approximately two hours into the Cairns Hinterland
Mountains to our start point. Outfitted into our helmets,
PFDs and armed with paddles we boarded the rafts and
were introduced to our guides. This adventure was filled
with fast flowing rapids, waterfalls and swimming
downstream in the most beautiful natural environment.
This was an incredibly fun filled day! The pictures tell
the story.
Monday, May 9 was a sleep in to 7am, breakfast and a
walk to the Cairns Marina. The boat to Fitzroy Island was
a journey of 45 minutes which was comfortable and
reasonably smooth for the people who suffer from sea
sickness. Fitzroy Island provided a tour of the turtle
rehabilitation centre, canoe expedition, glass bottom boat
tour, snorkelling the fringing reef and use of the inflatable
trampoline. The snorkelling highlight was the close
encounters with the local turtles in their natural
environment while feeding on the sea bed grass. Fitzroy
Island was a wonderful prelude to the following day on the
outer Greater Barrier Reef. We finished the day with a
delicious meal at the Courthouse Hotel.
Tuesday, May 10 was the penultimate adventure to the
outer reefs on Reef Magic cruises. A 90 minute catamaran
cruise in comfortable surrounds we arrived at the coral
lagoon with permanent pontoon and prepared the snorkel
equipment. Overboard into the tropical waters and we were
met by an amazing rich diversity of marine life. In between
snorkelling we ventured onto the submersible submarine
which travelled beyond the coral lagoon and into another
world of biological diversity. Another great day of fun! As
in 2015 we finished with dinner at Mondos Café on the
Marina Boardwalk. No karaoke this year but still a
delicious meal.
Wednesday, May 11 and time to return to Sydney. The
whole trip was a fun filled experience and the students will
take away a rich appreciation of the wonderful Great
Barrier Reef being the worlds largest coral reef. Lets hope
the reef stays with us for future generations.
A thank you to all the students for their co-operation and to
Mr Grant, Mr Creagan, Miss Smith and Miss Curtin for
their help and support during the trip.

We were exposed to a:
“world of accidental judgements and casual
slaughters, where everyone dies but no-one is
permitted to grieve, and a young man speaks for us
all by daring to speak for himself.”
After the performance, there was a Q & A
opportunity between cast and audience where our
own Rhianna asked a probing question of the cast.
After the performance, theatre critics raved about this
‘gripping, thrilling and contemporary version of
Shakespeare’s classic tale of power, politics, madness
and corruption’ just as Year 12 raved about ‘the two
metre pizza with six different varieties’ we devoured
at Criniti’s after a hard morning’s ‘work’. Along with
our lovely hostess, we celebrated Cassie’s upcoming
18th birthday with a complimentary ‘Nutella ball’
doughnut while we discussed the merits of the
performance we had just witnessed. After
filling up on Shakespeare and pizza, we made the
journey back to Woolooware after an extremely
satisfying day!
As their proud teacher, I would like to publicly
acknowledge the wonderful students we have at
Woolooware High School; the students are a credit to
themselves, their families and our community.

WHS GOES RIVERSIDE TO SEE
HAMLET
by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
“To be or not to be… that is the question!”
Did you know?
The first performance of Hamlet was by the
King’s Men at the Globe theatre between
1600 and 1601.
Hamlet is the most frequently performed play
around the world. It has been calculated that
a performance begins somewhere in the world
every minute of every day.
Edwin Booth, the older brother of John
Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln’s assassin,
performed ‘to be or not to be’ for one
hundred nights in his role of Hamlet at the
Winter Garden Theatre, New York, in the
1864/65 season.
The opening line of the soliloquy, ‘to be or
not to be, that is the question,’ is the most
searched for Shakespeare quote on the
internet.
More than 200 women have performed ‘to be
or not to be’ in the role of Hamlet on the
professional stage.
The storyline of Disney film, The Lion
King, is based on Hamlet.
On Wednesday, 11 May Year 12 Advanced English
ventured out of Woolooware and trekked over to
the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta, to
explore the intriguing and timeless Shakespearean
tragedy, Hamlet. As part of our critical study of
texts (Module B), Year 12 watched a contemporary
version of the play in order to further their
understanding of its relevance and enduring
qualities as a play for all audiences and contexts.

Year 9 Marine are currently doing their boat licence
course at school. Recently they had Ray Lonsdale
from Service NSW present to them in class about
some of the key safety rules of the sea. The students
also participate in a full day practical assessment
where they learn to safely drive a boat, launch and
retrieve a boat and the importance of the rules on the
water.

English Extension 1 ‘Ways of
Thinking’ Romanticism
On Sunday, 15 May the Extension 1 students sacrificed
their Sunday to make their way to an ETA Study Day in
order to consolidate their learning of the course prior to
their Trial HSC examinations. The day was divided into
three sessions:
I. Introduction to Extension 1
II. Critical Writing for the Module ‘Ways of
Thinking’
III. Imaginative Writing for the Module ‘Ways of
Thinking’
The students found the lectures both informative and
enlightening leading to a ‘reanimation’ of their
imaginations after studying T.S. Coleridge poetry, Mary
Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jane Campion’s film, Bright
Star.
Thank you to the girls who attended the day and I would
also like to wish Year 12 the best of luck in their
upcoming Trial HSC examinations; keep writing those
practice essays and creative pieces!!

YEAR 12 - SUPREME COURTS
On Tuesday, 24 May Year 12 students studying
Legal Studies participated in an excursion to the
Supreme Court in Sydney.
Students were addressed by the Registrar of the
court who conducted a Q&A session on the legal
profession.
Students also had the opportunity to sit in the
courtroom to observe a murder trial against two
former police officers.
Students heard the closing arguments of the defense
and observed members of the jury performing their
role in achieving justice.
The students found the case of interest and quite
different to the high paced, dramatic depictions of
criminal cases presented in television drama.
U TURN THE WHEEL
Year 11 students recently tool part in U Turn the
Wheel for their Crossroads program. Guest
presenters from NSW Police, NRMA, Ambulance,
L Trent Driving School and St George Youth
Services educated our students about safe driving and
the dangers associated with the road.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Mr Glen Jacob
Head Teacher - Social Science
Tell us about your teaching career.
I started teaching in 1995 at Elizabeth Macarthur
High School which is located near Camden. I was
lucky enough to get a job at Woolooware High
School in 2012. I have also been marking HSC
Business Studies for the past 20 years.
What did you do in class this week that was really
interesting?
As part of looking at business management, Year 11
Business Studies completed the “Moon” activity.
They were given a scenario where they crash land on
the moon. The students then have to determine the
most useful items to take on their journey to the
Mothership about 300km away. Students undertake
the task individually, then as a team. The results were
then compared to the results NASA gave.
We found that overall, teams get better outcomes than
individuals working on the same task. For this reason,
many business managers organise their human
resources into teams – so as to achieve better results.

know
I’m a massive Western Sydney Wanderers supporter.
Ms Jo Peard
Teacher - Languages
Tell us about your teaching career.
I started teaching at a private school in south-west
Sydney before coming to Woolooware. After
having my two children, I taught for a while at
Burwood Girls High School before coming back
to Woolooware. I also worked for a while as the
Indonesian Consultant for the NSW Department of
Education.
What did you do in class this week that was really
interesting?
This week has been exam week. My Year 11
students have had to do a five minute speaking
interview with me entirely in Indonesian. It can be
quite stressful for them but they handle it well. We
have also been playing vocabulary game using
Kahoot and Quizlet.
Tell us something about yourself that we may not
know
Aside from loving all things Indonesian (except
durian!), I love animals. I have a dog, Ruby, who
is almost 19 years old, chickens and fish at home.
A long time ago, I was a cheerleader for the
Cronulla Sharks, which is why I introduced Cheer
as a sport here at Woolooware.
