CELEBRATING80YEARS

ment.  The seeds were sown by ourfounder Allan Preshaw and other likeminded individuals and as the benefitswere reaped and more seeds sown wehave grown to become the strong, in-fluential and respected club that weare today.  It is with pride that I saythat I belong to the Derwent StrikersHockey Club.

The Derwent Hockey Club is a placewhere dreams can be reached.Throughout the years, many past andpresent players reach the pinnacle ofthe game by gaining selection in na-tional teams.  To these players I extendmy thanks for your continued involve-ment with the club because you havebeen and continue to be an inspirationfor our juniors. But lets not forget themajority, where we can have a run (ifyou still can) on a Saturday, Sunday orWednesday and enjoy the sport.

But the Derwent Hockey Club is morethan just hockey. Once you play withinthe club you gain a connection; a con-nection with those around you which isakin to or can be described as higherthan acquaintances, higher than justfriends but rather, family. When we jointhe Club, young or old, we are children, students, teachers, doctors, lawyers, artists, nurses, builders, from all differ-ent areas of life. It is not long beforethe differences between us, no longerexist and we have a friendship that is alifetime one. When I joined the Derwent

Hockey Club at age 14, thanks toHelen Wells, I had no idea, that I wouldgain the friendships that I did. Friend-ships that got me through the hardtimes, whether it be relationship break-downs or health crisis’s and the goodtimes, lifetime partnerships and chil-dren. One of my closest confidants andwhom I consider more as a sister, thegodmother of my son, is someone Imet through hockey. Without the Der-went Hockey Club I would not havethat relationship.

On the flip side of that are the familieswithin the Club. I have played (follow-ing my mothers footsteps into thegame), my husband played, my daugh-ters play and my son will join the Under8’s at the ripe age of 6 next year –watch out Tania & Kath. My family istypical of so many other families in-volved with the Club and you onlyneed to look at our current junior andsenior membership to see that. Forthose who doubt me I ask you to lookaround you, we have the Wells,Geeves, Fahey, Street, Bennett, Smith,Taylor, Jeffrey and Westland families toname but a few examples. It has beenand I suspect will continue to be thecase that the children of our senior

players will become the senior playersof tomorrow – whether it be a 3rd gen-eration of Addison / Palfreyman, or a2nd generation of Fitzpatrick, Inglis,Strugnell, Fawkner or Bonde. Thestrength of this family involvement orrather the connection is the principalreason why Derwent has become astrong club, both on and off the field.

We have had periods of success, doubts, failures and concerns through-out our life. However, if we continue aswe have throughout those past 80years, I believe that our attitudes, andcommitment to the club's seniors, jun-iors, and veterans teams, and our com-mittee and the future ones will assureus of a future in which Derwent is arespected club on and off the turf.

ANewImageAs a result of a disastrous period ofplayer walk outs and the Club’s direfinancial position life member, GlennTremayne, put forward an idea to re-brand the Club to put a positive spinon Derwent’s future.

Glenn and Jo Traynor formed a Sub-committee to research re-brandingoptions. The thought was that a thirdcolour needed to be incorporated intoa new uniform. With design input fromSimon Ancher and assistance fromUniform City a sample uniformfeaturing Yellow/gold was made up.On Uniform City’s suggestion asecond sample featuring burnt orangewas also produced. The Sub-committee took an instant liking to theburnt orange and proceeded to havetracksuits etc made up.

These uniform samples were taken tothe various teams for feedback. Somedidn’t like the new colour scheme.....but majority ruled and version one ofthe orange (which wasn't as burnt as itwas supposed to be) proceeded.

In a bid to attract young players backto the club the sub-committee decidedthat a new name/logo was alsoneeded as part of the re-branding. Acollaborative effort with the subcommittee and Simon Ancher came upwith a rough mockup of a new logowhich was taken to Simon Bevan forsome finessing.......and the rest ishistory.

If the situation does not improve itmay become necessary to re-intro-duce shoe checks prior to groundentry or take away the use of theFriends grounds. Neither of these op-tions are ideal and hopefully with eve-ryone's cooperation won’t be
