Dear Friends and Colleagues:

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I am able to share 2018 was another standout year for the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) Foundation. We continue to see growing interest from IAOMS members, affiliated associations, foundations, and industry stakeholders to support our mission. The generosity of our donors enables us to expand existing programs and gives us the ability to explore new and exciting avenues to advance our specialty.

The Foundation Fellowship Program remained a cornerstone funding priority and a key driver for the expansion of education and training for the next generation of OMF surgeons. In 2018, we provided three trainee surgeons with this special opportunity to receive hands-on training and refine their craft. Fellowship recipients were exposed to new environments and connected with distinguished surgeons to serve as lifelong mentors. We would like to recognize KLS Martin Group, who continued their generous support of the Fellowship in Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery.

This year also marked the launch of the IAOMS Foundation Visiting Scholars program. This opportunity to observe and study with top surgeons and professors for a brief period of time (2-4 weeks) amplifies our ability to create greater connectivity among our specialty, presenting a platform for young specialists to benefit from the guidance of experienced surgeons at renowned institutions across the globe. Thanks to the support from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the OMS Foundation, we were pleased to award two scholarships in 2018. The experience acquired by the young surgeons who received this opportunity will leave a lasting impression on their careers. We look forward to expanding this program in the years to come.

As I reflect on the year, one of the most memorable moments was the inaugural IAOMS/AAOMS International Reception that took place at the AAOMS Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. The event was graciously sponsored by Dentsply Sirona. We were proud to support and share this honor with AAOMS during its 100th anniversary. It was a defining moment that brought together individuals from all around the world to celebrate our specialty and the strength of our professional community.

Looking to the future of the IAOMS Foundation, I have no doubt that we will continue to build on our history of achievement in order to create a stronger future for all OMF surgeons and our specialty as a whole. With that being said, we are pleased to share that the Foundation will be embarking on one of its most ambitious endeavors in 2019, as we prepare to launch the IAOMS Foundation Global Impact Campaign. This multi-million dollar fundraising effort will enable us to further expand our flagship programs, while introducing new initiatives that touch the lives of surgeons and patients around the world.

This year was truly memorable, and we couldn’t be more excited about writing the next chapter of our organization. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you for your support as we seek to fulfill our mission.

Dr. Larry Nissen IAOMS Foundation Chair

IAOMS FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP

Now in its ninth year, the IAOMS Foundation Fellowship Program offers three trainee surgeons a one-year immersion in one of two specialty areas: Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery (offered in Beijing, China and Shanghai, China) or Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Surgery (six months in Bangalore, India and six months in Hyderabad, India). Since its inception, 24 surgeons have received Fellowships. Each year, one of these fellowships is sponsored through the ongoing support of the KLS Martin Group.

VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

2018 was the inaugural year for the new IAOMS Foundation Visiting Scholarship Program. Designed as an opportunity for young specialist members of IAOMS to travel to other countries and visit, for short periods, prestigious OMS Departments to enhance their postgraduate education. Two surgeons were awarded scholarships to visit prominent training centers to observe and study with top surgeons and professors.

“ Many thanks to the praiseworthy Chair and Trustees of the IAOMS Foundation for this unmatched opportunity of being recipient of this programme. Different perspectives, techniques and approaches will serve to advance my daily practice and patient management in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I wish the foundation continue it’s support to willing and fully dedicated young surgeons in all over the World.”
