Congratulations to our second Pre-Primary class, Mrs Bateman’s class, for a sensational item at last week’s assembly. The children performed so confidently and looked great as bears!! Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women were there at first contact. They were there at the Torres Strait Pearlers strike in 1936, the Day of Mourning in 1938, the 1939 Cummeragunja Walk-Off, at the 1946 Pilbara pastoral workers' strike, the 1965 Freedom Rides, the Wave Hill walk off in 1966, on the front line of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972 and at the drafting of the Uluru Statement. They have marched, protested and spoken at demonstrations and national gatherings for the proper recognition of rights and calling for national reform and justice. They have marched, protested and spoken at demonstrations and national gatherings for the proper recognition of rights and calling for national reform and justice. The women were heavily involved in the campaign for the 1967 Referendum and also put up their hands to represent their people at the establishment of national advocacy and representative bodies from the National Aboriginal Congress (NAC) to ATSIC to Land Councils and onto the National Congress for Australia’s First Peoples. They often did so while caring for families, maintaining homes and breaking down cultural and institutionalised barriers and gender stereotypes. The women did so because they demanded a better life, greater opportunities and - in many cases equal rights - for the children, families and people. They were pioneering women like Barangaroo, Truganini, Gladys Elphick, Fannie Cochrane-Smith, Evelyn Scott, Pearl Gibbs, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Celuia Mapo Salee, Thancoupie, Justine Saunders, Gladys Nicholls, Flo Kennedy, Essie Coffey, Isabel Coe, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Eleanor Harding, Mum Shirl, Ellie Gaffney and Gladys Tybingoompa. Today, they are trailblazers like Joyce Clague, Yalmay Yunupingu, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Nova Peris, Carol Martin, Elizabeth Morgan, Barbara Shaw, Rose Richards, Vonda Malone, Margaret Valadian, Lowitja O’Donoghue, June Oscar, Pat O’Shane, Pat Anderson Jill Milroy, Banduk Marika, Linda Burney and Rosalie Kunoth-Monks – to name but a few. Their achievements, their voice and their unwavering passion give strength have empowered past generations and paved the way for generations to come. Fire Brigade Visit

On Thursday 28

th

June we had a visit from the South Coogee Volun-teer Fire Brigade. This was organised by Mr Morgan-Hind who has been working in our Year 1 class this term as a student teacher.

Firstly, he showed us all the parts of the firetruck. We got to see the hoses, the first aid kit and the ladders. Then he showed us how the fire hoses work. He turned on the hose and the water went re-ally high into the sky. After we all had a go at using the fire hose. We turned it on, pointed it at a cone and then tried to knock over a cone. Our favourite part was when we got to use the fire hose and when Mr Morgan-Hind turned on the sirens. They were really loud.

School Nurse

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis or ‘gastro’ is a common condition in children of all ages. It occurs when the bowel is infected by a virus or bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes, fever. Most cases in children are not serious, but it is very important to make sure that a child with gastro receives enough fluid. If your child has gastro, keep them away from school for 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped. If symptoms persist see your family doctor. The easiest way to prevent gastro is to make sure everyone in the family washes their hands regularly, especially before eating and after going to the toilet. Page Content Colds Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help: Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the inner elbow. If into hands, to wash hands straight afterwards.

Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating. Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using

handkerchiefs.) Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

If concerned, see your family doctor. Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy

foods. Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal

passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold. What to do if your child gets a cold No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

Rest: This need not be in bed. Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving

lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.

Hand washing Washing hands is the easiest way to protect ourselves from contagious diseases, like colds, influenza and gastroenteritis. Hands should be washed before and after eating or preparing food, after going to the toilet and after nose blowing. When teaching your child to wash their hands:

Use clean water and soap, making sure they cover their hands and wrists.

Use a brush to clean under nails if they’re dirty too Dry their hands with something clean (like a paper towel)

Alcohol based sanitisers are useful when soap and water is not available. Use half a teaspoon of the product and encourage your child to rub their hands together until they’re dry. If you can see dirt on their hands, it is better to use soap and water. For more information go to www.healthywa.wa.gov.au
