Dear Parents, Friends and Students of St Vincent’s School,
Congratulations to all our PP to Year 6 students for their wonderful efforts and good behaviour during their recent in-school
swimming lessons. The students must also be commended for their general responsibility and organisation as not too many items
have been reported lost.
P&F Busy Bee this Sunday from 11am. Our P&F would love any help you can provide towards completing our community garden.
Please BYO shovels, rakes and trailers would be handy too. There’ll be a sausage sizzle lunch.
Administration System. All CEWA schools are involved in an upgrade of administration systems through the Leading Lights
initiative. As with all things new, there are many opportunities of new learning. The school fees went out recently and our
communication methods are getting an overhaul. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused and respectfully ask for your
patience until we master the ‘newness’.
MJR Parent Information Session: We are lucky to have Peter Mitchell (Mitch), from Tasmania, visiting our school on Friday 16th
March to talk about Making Jesus Real (MJR) with our students. Mitch is also keen to talk to parents on that day straight after
assembly. Please let the office staff know if you’re able to attend. Mitch is a real character and I guarantee you’ll be inspired and
entertained.
During the morning assembly, we will be announcing our first MJR Award winner. The winner will get to foster Vincenzo (Vinnie)
the MJR Bear for a week. The MJR Award winner will be chosen from the nominations received. There is still time for nominations
to be made.
Have you noticed the lovely manners of our students? It is something noted by almost all visitors to our school. Congratulations,
parents and families, on instilling the importance of manners in your children. Your children are making a positive difference in
our community and the world. Fantabulous effort, families.
The season of Lent consists of the 40 days, not including Sundays, before Easter. The word Lent is derived from the Germanic
root word for long because it is observed in spring when the days get longer. Lent is a time to prepare for the holiest time of the
Christian year by fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and other acts of penance. Many people give up something for Lent (a food, watching
TV, etc.) or do something to bring them closer to God such as daily devotions or charitable donations. The church colour for most
of Lent is purple which symbolises repentance as well as royalty. The word alleluia is not used during Lent. Lent is a time for
reflection – what is the positive difference we give to our families, our communities and the world?
Sacramental Programme: Next weekend our 1st Eucharist candidates and their families will be commissioned during the Parish
Masses. First Eucharist is a special occasion – a further step in becoming one with Christ and united with the People of God.
Please keep the 1st Eucharist Candidates, their families, teachers and catechists in your prayers.
Staffing: Mrs Espinoza will be on leave until the end of the term, Mrs Jenny Forrest will be in 2Gold whilst Mrs Espinoza is away.
Mrs Kirsty Byrne and Mrs Charlotte Quinn will be starting their maternity leave at the end of this term, as they prepare for the
arrival of their babies. Mr Jayson Peacock will take on both Assistant Principal roles. We are currently in the process of
interviewing for the new 6Gold teacher.
Congratulations to Dominic (2Gr), Amelia (5Go) and Abigail (6Gr) on the arrival of their youngest brother, Patrick Kieran.
Congratulations to Amy and Cale; welcome to Patrick.
God Bless … Karmela Messineo – Principal

The Story Dogs reading program for 2018 started this week!
We have Christina and her Labrador, Jasmine working with the students in Year 1 Green, Anne and her
Shih-tzu, Alfie working with the students in Year 1 Gold and
Sue and her American Staffy, Summer working with the Year 2 students.
We are very fortunate to have Christina, Anne and Sue volunteer their time at our school as part of this wonderful reading
program "to make reading fun for children, so they become confident, lifelong readers."
If you would like to become a volunteer for this program at our school, please email the Kwinana Coordinator: Christina
Macaulay [email protected].
Alternatively, visit the Story Dogs website and click on the ‘Join Us’ subheading to learn ‘How to volunteer with Story Dogs
in Australia’.

Last week we received several boxes of goodies from Woolworths through the Earn and Learn initiative. We would like to
give a HUGE thank you to all of the families, staff and wider community members who helped us to achieve such a
fantastic result! Thank you to Mrs Bianca Van Ryt for coordinating Earn and Learn for us last year.

Holy Communion Enrolment Meeting – Tuesday 13th March
The Holy Communion Enrolment Meeting will be held this Tuesday at 3:30pm in the School Hall. It is important that a
parent/carer attends this meeting as an outline of the Sacramental Program for Holy Communion will be explained and
notes for enrolment will be distributed.
Holy Communion Commitment Masses – Saturday 17th or Sunday 18th March
Next weekend on Saturday (6pm Mass) and Sunday (9:30am Mass) many of our Year 4 students and their families will
attend a Commitment Mass to announce their commitment in the journey towards receiving their First Holy Communion. It
is essential that all preparing communicants attend one of the Masses with their parents and hand in their enrolment
forms at the Mass.
Year 4, 5 and 6 Reconciliation
Over the next two weeks, students who have received the sacrament of reconciliation in Year 4, 5 and 6 will participate in
reconciliation with Father Daniel and Father Patricio. Receiving reconciliation in the lead up to Easter purifies our hearts.
Easter is the perfect time to reconcile with Christ and it helps prepare us to celebrate Christ’s life, death and resurrection
during Hoy Week.

St Patrick’s Feast Day Mass – Friday 16th March
Next Friday, the Pre-Primary and Year 5 buddy classes will lead the parish in celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Patrick. The
Mass will be held at 9am in the Church and you are all invited to attend. Saint Patrick was a 5th-
century Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. He is known as the "Apostle of Ireland" and he is the patron saint of
Ireland. The shamrock is used as a symbol of Ireland and as Ireland's patron saint, Saint Patrick is said to have used it as a
metaphor for the Holy Trinity – “God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit”. We look forward to celebrating the
works of Saint Patrick next week.
St Joseph’s Feast Day Mass – Monday 19th March
On Monday 19th March, the Year 2 and Year 4 classes will celebrate the Feast Day of St Joseph at the 9am Mass in the
Church. Saint Joseph was the husband of Mary and guardian of Jesus. Saint Joseph was the protector of the Church and is
the patron saint of workers. He was a very faithful man and willingly acted upon God’s will. We look forward to celebrating
the Feast Day of Saint Joseph and we hope you can join us for the celebration.
Harmony Day
Wednesday 21st March is Harmony Day! Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration
of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Held every year on 21 March,
the Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of
Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and
religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone. This year to celebrate Harmony Day, we will be hosting a
Cultural Dress Up Day for a gold coin donation. All donations will go towards our Mini
Vinnies Appeal for the St Vincent De Paul Society.

Social Media
There has been discussion around the school community about children and the use of social media. The Terms of
Service make it very clear that the minimum age for most social media is 13 years and for some it is even older.
All of the following Social Media Platforms have a minimum age of 13. If your child is using them, it is a breach of the
Terms of Service: Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Kik, Snapchat, Twitter and Youtube.

Science News - Biological Sciences.
Year 6 – The last few weeks we have looked at the effect of yeast in bread and how living micro-organisms have an impact
on our environment. We are also looking at how mould grows. We have started to look at fair tests how we Change one
thing, Measure one thing and keep all variables the Same. (Cows Moo Softly)
Year 5 – We have started to create our own animal that could survive in the desert, an animal with physical and behavioural
adaptations.
Year 4 – Some of our plants have grown to nearly 50cm tall. It has been great to see the children coming into the Science
room each day with family members to show and explain the changes that have taken place.
Year Three – This week we learnt how to use a branching key. A branching key uses yes/no questions and uses arrows to
follow the path of questions and answers. We learnt that animals can firstly be categorised into vertebrates and
invertebrates and then different categories like insects, molluscs, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals.
Year Two – We had a very exciting lesson looking at the life cycle of a mealworm. Did you know that a mealworm changes
from an egg, to a larva, a pupa and finally a darkling beetle? Come and have a look at our metamorphic changes and let
your children explain to you what is happening. We have started a piece of work that will explain the stages in great detail.
Year One – We have been looking for ants in our school and trying to attract them so we can follow their trails.
Pre-Primary – This week we learnt that in Science we don’t have pictures, we have labelled diagrams. The students created
a piece of art work and labelled the parts of a plant. Please come into the Science room and see our display.
Kindy – We have been working on a rotation of activities, painting a tree using our arms as the trunk, using eye droppers
to make shades of green and collecting/sorting things found in our environment.
The Science room is open in the mornings from 8.20am to 8.30am, Monday to Thursday. It is closed on Fridays. Please feel
free to come and visit with your child or children to see what they have been learning about and see their workbooks.

In-Term Swimming
Well done to all the Year 1-6’s who tried their very best over the two weeks of swimming lessons. Congratulations to those
who managed to pass their levels. Sandra, the lady in charge of the swimming programme said if you haven’t passed a
level this time, please don’t be upset! Sometimes there are little things that need perfecting first, so keep trying. The higher
levels are especially hard to meet all of the criteria. She encouraged everyone to keep practising and spoke to the year 6’s
about all of the opportunities that may be on offer when they get to Senior school.
Faction Swimming
Letters for Faction Swimming (Yr 3-6) on Tuesday 27th March have gone home. Please return them ASAP so I can start
planning the events. Any parental volunteers will be most welcome as we need helpers for ribbons, placings and of course
jumping in the pool just in case anyone needs some help!
Coles Schools for Sports Vouchers
We are collecting vouchers from Coles for some new sports equipment. St Vincent’s have collection boxes down at Coles
in Kwinana Hub, in the Church and also the Front Office. You can also collect them if you shop online by selecting St
Vincent’s to receive online vouchers. Thank you for everyone who has collected so far!
