Congratulations our wonderful Pre-Primary’s in Ms Chare’s room who made the best pirates at last week’s assembly performance. What an awesome day it was with so many pirates running around the school raising money for the children’s charity. I know all the children enjoy these days as well as the staff. Thank you to Mrs Groom, our School Chaplain, for organising a successful day. Many parents would have listened to the news reports this week regarding a nine year girl in England’s addiction to the Game Fortnite available on X-Box, Play Station and PC. It is timely to alert parents to ensure they have consistently strong restrictions with their children’s access to gaming. Apparently this game is one of the most addictive games currently available and I am very aware Queens Park PS has children in years 1 through to year 6 currently playing the game, even though it is rated for 12 year olds and above. Some of the reasons it may be so addictive is that it is online and you are playing with peers and don’t want to disappoint others in the team you belong to if you’re not playing. There is a survival instinct element- if your character is shot your real life survival instinct might kick in and your body tells you to fight back, and the promise of constant rewards encourages this. In our next newsletter we will have some more resent research in regard to this problem. Please follow the following link about ‘Keeping your Child Safe on the In-ternet’ https://www.parenting.com/article/keeping-your-child-safe-on-the-internet Teaching staff have completed all of your children’s reports and it’s now time for Mrs Hockaday and me to read them. The teachers spend a lot of time moderating work samples and looking at ongoing assessments so ensure the information you are receiving about your child’s achievements are as accurate as possible at the time of writing the reports. Once you receive your child’s report, if you have any concerns please make an appointment with the class room teacher or the person who has written the comment.

In the last week of school all of the school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme is ‘Because of her, we can!’ As the theme would suggest, it is recognising the roles Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - in the community and at local, state and national levels. I am looking forward to the celebration at QPPS and hope to see our parents actively involved in NAIDOC from Wednesday June 27 to Friday June 29. As many parents are aware after working for 10 years members of staff have the opportunity to take long service leave. It is time to really focus on yourself and your family, away from the day to day planning, teaching and reporting required of you as a teacher. Next term, Ms Denise Hastings, our Room 2 teacher will be taking 6 months long service leave. Ms Nicole Nici will replace Ms Hastings in Room 2. She is an experienced teacher, who left teaching for a few years to raise her young family. We wish Ms Hastings well during her break. Lastly, as we head into Term 3 and many families are considering vacations, please note; if your child is away from school for three weeks or longer they will be removed from the school roll and you will be required to re-enroll your child on their return. Please note, if this is a Kindy placement there may not be a place for your child when you return as we continue to get Kindy enrolments requests nearly weekly. Also, if you do not live in the Queens Park area your child may not be able to get back into our school, particularly at the moment, when our classes are full. Happy Eid Celebrations to our Islamic community. Eid is an important festival that is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan, which is the Islamic month of fasting.

On Wednesday 13
th of June, the
Queens Park Primary School Choir performed at the 2018 Children Sing Festival. The Festival was held at the Octagon Theatre at UWA and the other schools that attended were; Wembley PS, Nedlands PS, Dalkeith PS and Mt Claremont PS. Each school performed two songs by themselves on stage. The festival was not a competition, though each school is adjudicated and receives feedback. This is the second year Queens Park Primary School has performed in the festival and I am so proud of how beautifully they sang.
We sang a traditional song from the Torres Strait Island called ‘Sesere Eeye’ and a ‘Four Chord Song Medley’ which was a mash up of lots of different pop songs. Along with our piano accompanist Dan Slee, our very own year 5 student Mitchell Allen also accompanied the choir with his expert ukulele playing. The adjudicator was very impressed with QPPS Choir and said some lovely things about the choir. Some of her comments included the lovely way the choir sang together, the singing tone of the choir wasn’t forced; they were all very focused on the conductor (Mrs Doherty). They handled all the rhythm and tempo changes very well and what a wonderful choice of songs for the choir. We even had parents from other schools tell us how beautiful they sang. The overall adjudication is categorised as 1. Excellent, 2. Very Good, 3. Good, 4. Developing. Queens Park Primary School Choir received a Very Good overall! I could not be more proud of them. Thank you to all the parents, family and friends that attended the concert, it was wonderful to see so much support for the choir. There was a professional photographer at the concert who took photos of the choir. The details of how to purchase these photos will be in the next newsletter. I managed to snap a couple of photos after the concert when we were all excited after performing so well.
Well done QPPS Choir, your
representation of Queens Park Primary
School was absolutely outstanding.

On Monday 28th May till Friday 8
th June Room 1
shared our classroom with some very special guests, baby chicks! They arrived to great anticipation in an incubator (special heated container) ready to hatch. Early on
Wednesday morning our class noticed a fertilised egg had begun to ‘pip’ (cracking of the shell) and we watched in awe as ‘Pepsi’ broke free from it’s shell into the big wide world. It gave the students of Room 1 an opportunity to observe a natural event they would not normally experience. Over the next two weeks students observed and discussed the hatching of the eggs and compared the growth and changes in their science journals. Students had daily jobs to complete like feeding, filling up their water, weighing and observe them to ensure they are healthy and clean. This meant cleaning up after them as well! Students also learnt about the stages in the lifecycle of a chicken and subject specific vocabulary for an authentic purpose. This was a very popular feature of our classroom evident by the constant stream of students and parents from other classes wanting to see (and hold) the chicks. Sadly, on Friday 8
th
June we had to say our farewell and hope to participate in the program next year.
