Officer Reports
From the Seneschal
October was a very fun month. Everyone seems to becoming more involved, as school and work allows, and attendance has increased in most of the guilds thanks
to all of our excited members. This month is a good time to push for that extra bit
of new garb as BAM is fast approaching. A few days of classes and fighting is
really just the taste we need before war. For those interested in the extra bits of
information about BAM as they trickle out, please check bordermarch.org/BAM,
and let us know what you are excited about. (Kite's lesson for the month, do not
plan on getting any work done after Fighter practice)
-Kite the Damaged
From the Treasurer
No recent activity on the financial front. Last month saw our usual interest added
to the bank account. All reports have been submitted on time. If you would like to
request money, use shire property, make donations to the group, or propose fund
raisers, let me know and we can vote on it before the financial committee.
Kolfinna
From the Hospitaler
Welcome to all newcomers just discovering our Shire. The coming months are
filled with a myriad of activities for both our Shire and our kingdom. If you would
like to attend one of these events, but require supplies (clothing, feast gear, rides,
etc.) I would be delighted to help you. Please make liberal use of our email list for
any questions or concerns that need to be addressed!
In service,
Aldred
From the Minister of Arts and Sciences
And in the Arts and Sciences World...
Our new guilds for this year are looking great! We have Leather working on the
first and third Mondays, Brewing on the second and fourth Mondays, Scribal arts
3
on second and fourth Tuesdays, fiber arts on third Tuesdays, and Dance on
Sunday. So with all this activity there is no excuse not to go to something and you
are sure to find an activity you enjoy! For more details about time and location of
guilds please look at the Shire calendar on our website and for the off-campus
events don't be shy to ask for a ride! For those interested in A&s activities not
currently offered in one of our guilds I still encourage you to talk to me for I can only start a guild if I know there is interest, so please show interest! So get
involved everybody and enjoy your time in the Shadowlands!!!
Lady Caitlin
From the Armored Combat Marshal
Hey everyone! Your amazing knight marshal is here! So much like winter, BAM
is coming...good times. So we all know this is going to be a Shadowlands go-to
event, but also I am excited to see who will be going for the melee Chiv. style.
Sometime this month pre-BAM we will try to have a melee style practice will
shield wall and stuff. I hope to see y'all out there. Also I hope we all eat a bunch of turkey and enjoy November!
Love,
Felix.
From the Rapier Marshal
As with last month, we've seen good attendance this month for fighter practices. We're getting the newer fighters to the point of sparring, and it looks like they've
had a chance to show us their stuff in a Shadowlands Tiny Tournament! Listen up
for Word-Fame at Populace to find out who won. As a reminder: if you intend to
fight rapier, you are required to wear long sleeves, long pants, close-toed shoes,
and rigid groin protection (men only). We can loan you everything else you need
to get started. If anyone is interested in making another trip to Bryn Gwlad,
Star/Loch, or having another Tiny Tournament, let me know and I'll start planning
for it. Come out to practice, meet other fighters, learn new things, and have fun. I
hope to see you there!
Kolfinna
From the Archery Marshal
Greetings to the populace!
During the month of October, the shire had an average of 6 archers at each archery
practice with several newcomers joining our ranks. There currently a strong
interest in combat archery in the shire with 4 archers preparing for authorization.
In addition to practicing with combat bolts at archery practice, much time has been
spent making crossbows, combat bolts, and armor.
In November, we have 3 melee events with combat archery on the kingdom
calendar: Battle of Three Kings (Nov. 4-6), War of the Ages (Nov. 11-13), and Bordermarch Autumn Melees (BAM) (Nov. 17-20). There will be a combat
archery authorization class at BAM for those who want to become combat
archers. There will also be adult and youth target archery tournaments at BAM,
organized by yours truly, to select the next Bordermarch Archery Champions.
And as always, archery practice is Sundays, 3 - 5 PM, at the archery range in
Austin ’s Colony Park . Newcomers and novices welcome. Loaner equipment
will be available. Watch the list for updates!
Ronald fitz Robert
From the Chronicler I am always looking for submissions to include in The Shadow Knows, so if you
have any artistic talent or creative writing talent, please help me out by submitting
something (ANYTHING!!!) for publication.
If anyone is interested in publishing, the office of Chronicler is accepting
applications, and will continue to do so until it is filled. It looks good on a resume,
and it’s not very difficult, but I’ve been doing it for 2 ½ years, and I’m tired…
Special thanks to Lord Ronald fitz Robert for printing the newsletter.

In October nothing of historical interest happened. Or if it did, no one told me.

The Shadow Reader By Lord Pædric OMullan
Title - Sovereign
Author - C.J. Sansom
Publisher - Viking
Sovereign is another in the Matthew Shardlake Mystery
series (see The Shadow Knows, March AS XLV). Matthew
Shardlake is a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in the latter days of King
Henry VIII, formerly in the employ of Lord Thomas Cromwell.
In Sovereign, Shardlake is sent by Archbishop Cranmer to
the city of York to serve as a jurist accompanying the Royal
Progress, with an added responsibility to supervise the care of a
royal prisoner, and see that the prisoner, a suspected rebel in the
botched York rebellion of 1541, makes it back to London for
interogation.
While in York Shardlake is forced to investigate the death of
a local glazier. Is it an accident or murder? To complicate matters
further, Shardlake soon finds himself the target of several murder
attempts. In the course of his investigation he finds, then loses, a
cache of mysterious documents which could, in the wrong hands,
rock the very foundations of the monarchy. But no one knows who's
hands they are in.
As Shardlake and his trusty assistant, Jack Barak, muddle
their way through these mysteries, C.J. Sansom provides a
fascinating look at an England in turmoil. With rebellion in the
north, conflict between the traditionalists and reformers in the
church, and Queen Catherine Howard being, well, herself, Sovereign
is full of detail about life in Tudor England.
Sovereign is an excellent and complex tale, woven with
realistic detail and subtle humor. I highly recommend it for anyone
with an interest in Tudor England, or anyone who likes a good
mystery.

The Ballad of Ulsted the Unsteady By Lord Pædric OMullan
People, let me tell you ‘bout the Knight, Ulsted, He’s earned a lot of honors, but they don’t go to his head. One day while he was out earning fame and great renown, Sir Ulsted the Unsteady won the Ansteorran Crown!
Royal, that is! Black Star, Majesty!
Well, the next thing you know Ulsted’s upon the throne, His Lady wife Cateau, she got a title of her own. A lady of such grace the Knowne Worlde has seldom seen, Cateau d’Ardennes became the Ansteorran Queen!
Fancy chairs! Big brass hats!
Then Ulsted sought to prove that it wasn’t just a fluke, So he won the Crown again, that’s how he became a duke! And then somebody told him that the third time was the hardest, So he won another Crown to make a Queen of Ebergardis!
One King, two Roses! That’s a bouquet!
But Ulsted wasn’t done, he said “I can win some more!” And there was Duchess Ebergardis after reign number four! And when we thought, “He’s done! There is naught for which to strive!” He battled through the heat to win Crown Tourney number five!
Look out, Inman! It’s the other “Once and Every Other King!”
(Optional “Shadowlands Pride” verse) Now he’s a famous Ansteorran! He’s a Duke with many fans! And though he lives in Loch Solleir, he came from Shadowlands! Yes it’s been many years but the old Shire claims him still,
And if he keeps on winning Crowns we prob’ly always will!
Liked him so much he’s got 2 Comets!
He named us the Capital of Ansteorra! Big like Moose!
Well, thank y’all for listenin’, my song is nearly done. I hope it wasn’t boring, and I hope you had some fun! But even if you didn’t then I hope you learned one thing: For Ulsted the Unsteady it’s been good to be the King! Long live Duke Ulsted!
