On behalf of the Village Board and StreamwoodVeterans Commission, we invite you to join us in honoring those who gave the great-est gift at our Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday, May 25, at 11:00 am.

Come out to watch our next generation of leaders and volunteers as we host our2014 Student Government Day Mock Board meeting on May 14 at 7:00 pm. I amalways inspired by the students’ enthusiasm and diligence as they learn how localgovernment works, debate issues that may face our community, and get a betterappreciation for public service. We invite you to join us for Student GovernmentDay. See our youth in action, as they take over the town.

Our Community and Economic Development Commission will be hosting aManufacturer’s Summit on May 1 at 8:00 am to shed light on the skills-jobgap. Manufacturing businesses are growing, but are struggling to find avail-able skilled labor. We invite our business community to come out and sharetheir experiences in addressing this challenge, and to learn about the resourcesavailable to help them succeed.

As the days grow longer and warmer, our thoughts turn to Summer Celebration.Mark your calendar for the community event of the year! Summer Celebration2014 marks the 20th Anniversary of our community festival. Please join us atHoosier Grove Park on July 25-27, where we will be having “A Roaring GoodTime” in honor of this amazing milestone. Please consider volunteering to helpmake this year’s festival the best ever!

President Roth thanks Commissioner PeteSchwartz for his 25 years of service

The Community and Economic Development Commission (CEDC) will be hostinga Manufacturing Summit on May 1 to help bridge the gap between availablemanufacturing jobs, and needed employee skills. Manufacturing is on the rise.Getting key positions filled is a struggle for many companies because of anaging workforce and disinterest in manufacturing careers and skills. TrelleborgSealing Solutions – Streamwood (TSS-Streamwood) is one company facing thischallenge. TSS-Streamwood fabricates unique components for hydraulic andstructural applications. They addressed the skilled labor shortage by creatingtheir own CNC Apprenticeship program. TSS Human Resources ManagerRicardo Acevedo said, “It was better to build our own workforce instead of rely-ing on the market.” TSS-Streamwood invested more than 2,200 hours in train-ing last year. Mr. Acevedo noted that prior to getting involved with their pro-gram, many of these young workers didn’t even think about manufacturing asa career. “They didn’t realize that the new manufacturing jobs require keyskills and sophisticated technology, and with that comes improved pay.”

The CEDC is hoping to help businesses such as TSS-Streamwood work with ElginCommunity College and School District U-46 to educate workers about theopportunities in manufacturing, and provide good-paying jobs in our region.
