Smoke Alarms Save LivesSmoke alarms are an important part of fire prevention. They alert you to a potentialfire, giving you and your family time to escape. Installing a smoke alarm is one of thebest things you can do to protect yourself and your family. Here’s how to get started:

• Where do I put them? Smoke alarms are required to be on every floor, and within 15 feet of everysleeping area.

• Are smoke alarms difficult to install? Battery-powered smoke alarms are easy. You only need ascrewdriver. For hardwired smoke alarms, have an electrician install and replace them.

• How do I keep my smoke alarm working? Both regular smoke alarms and hardwired alarmswith battery back-ups should have their batteries changed about once per year. Replace the entire unitevery 8-10 years.

For more information or assistance with your smoke alarm, call the Fire Department at (630) 736-3650.

School District U-46 NewsNew Math Resource Rolls Out in All School District U-46Elementary Schools

School District U-46 elementary mathematics instruction is getting a makeover. Forseveral years, teachers have been adjusting their lessons to meet the more rigorousdemands of the new Illinois Learning Standards in math and English language arts.During the 2015-16 school year, teachers will turn to a complete set of coursematerials, called “Eureka Math,” to better facilitate this shift in math classes. SomeU-46 teachers, called Early Implementers, started using this resource last year, andhave already seen success with their students.

Eureka Math was developed by Great Minds Inc., and a team of experts who alsohad a hand in writing the Common Core State Standards, which form the foundationof the Illinois Learning Standards. New York State originally commissioned the set ofcourse materials and they maintain the resources under the name Engage NY.

The Common Core State Standards have prompted a shift in the way teachersacross the country approach math education. For years, math curriculum in theUnited States has been criticized for being “a mile wide and an inch deep,”meaning students are exposed to many concepts each year, but they don’t learnmuch about any of them. Eureka Math takes students through a logicalprogression of math concepts, helping them develop fluency and conceptualunderstanding that few students had been able to achieve in the past. It facilitatesa true understanding of how math works and how it applies to the real world.

The math homework that students bring home will look different. To help guide theirchildren, parents will be able to refer to worksheets students will complete in class to

prepare for their take-home assignments. Great Minds has also created tip sheets forparents by grade level, which describe what math concepts students learn in variousunits and show how parents can help their children practice these concepts. Thatinformation is available at greatminds.net/parents.

In addition to discussing any questions about Eureka Math with individual teachers, parents can also refer to the U-46 mathematics website at www.u-46.org, whichwill be updated with information and resources throughout the school year.
