Formally known as SBSS, Leicester City's provision for young people, who find it difficult to learn in school

    Inside this issue:

I hope that you enjoy reading our final newsletter of the 2014.15

academic year. As you will see, from reading this newsletter, it has been a very positive year for the LPS and its students. We are

anticipating some positive examination results from our KS4 students and are also expecting most of our current year 11 students to progress into further education, employment or

training next year. Despite the loss of our Newry Centre, at the beginning of the year, the LPS’s staff team has been able to

continue to deliver high quality education programmes to young people and in return our students have repaid us by demonstrating a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment. In particular our

Millgate Lodge students have produced a fantastic range of written

and practical work, while some of our Carisbrooke students have engaged in our new RACE programme, during which they have learnt about the benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Our GROVE students have continued to excel in designing and making some wonderful wall displays for local primary schools.

This year has also been a busy year for our vocational placement team which has supported over 100 students to access programmes with a range of vocational providers. I am also

pleased to be able to confirm the opening of our new, in-house

Please note the arrangements for the start of the 2015.16 academic year. The LPS will be closed

on the 26th, 27th and 28th August 2015 for staff training and will open to students on Tuesday 1st September 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer.

    Best wishes

As we hurtle towards July our Year 11’s have left the Centre to take up apprenticeships,

college placements and working opportunities post 16. These positive pathways are a direct reward for all of the hard work and endeavour of the young people, BSC staff, Connexions,

vocational providers and the students’ referring schools. We wish all of the Year 11 leavers all the very best of luck and we hope that they will continue to build on all of their positive experiences whilst working with the LPS.

For our Year 10 students who remain some will find themselves participating in the GCSE

taster programme for the last two weeks of term, with the larger majority of the cohort remaining on the Functional programme in the pursuit of Level one and two qualifications in Maths, English, ICT and the Skills for Employment and Further Learning Diploma Course.

All that remains is for me to say a massive thank you to all of the staff here at BSC for their

dedication, patience and perseverance this academic year. This drive and positive ethos has once again enabled the young people to achieve a wide range of relevant qualifications at a high level.

Summer Term at Millgate This term has been challenging because of the

transient nature of our students. We have seen a good number return to school or they

have been found relevant vocational courses. At Millgate we try to improve our students’ social skills and behaviour as well as prepare

them academically for their next stage in education. We have introduced the ‘REACH’

system and this has been a success so far with the students buying into the concept. It has seen an improvement in behaviour for

most of our students. We have also introduced ‘British Values in the lessons and

this gave us the scope to include topics on The Battle of Waterloo and the Magna Carta as well as an in depth look at Richard the

Third and his ceremonial burial in Leicester. Our Maths lessons are very progressive and

we concentrate on the numeracy skills our individual students need to progress. We

have lots of interactive resources to keep the students engaged and they seem to learn very quickly.

In English our students have produced some

excellent written work and all have contributed to writing a story for younger children in their creative writing classes.

Our Art lessons have continued and there

has been some stunning work produced. This lesson is extremely popular as it gives

the students a chance to explore and use their imagination. It is a welcome break from the more academic lessons.

Next term we are introducing a new course

called ‘UExplore’ which is a dedicated course for preparation for work. We are also expanding our Art lessons to include a

structured programme to discuss different artists and techniques.

At the end of this term we have seen a

couple of staff changes: we say a sad farewell to Dina and wish her the best of

luck at Braunstone Skills Centre, and we welcome Carole and James to our team.

We look forward to working with them next term.

Chris James A fruitful trip out for the RACE Project

As part of the Carisbrooke RACE

(Raising Aspirations through Cooking and Exercise)

programme, students enjoyed an afternoon of strawberry picking at a local “Pick-Your-

Own” farm. This particular activity focused on the

cultivation aspect of the programme and the students enjoyed learning about the way

strawberries and other berries are grown and produced.

Needless to say, more strawberries were eaten than

    picked!

  • This academic year has seen almost 100 students

access vocational provision courses with some students excelling on their chosen programmes. As we come to the end of the academic year results

look promising for the Yr 11 students who have ended their programmes this year. We wish them

all well for their future prospects. We are still offering packages for Young People in a

variety of areas such as Sports, Multi-sports, Creative Arts, Hair & Beauty, Childcare / Health &

Social Care, Bike Maintenance, Motorbike Repair, Music Production, Catering, ICT Repair, Fashion & Design, Personal and Social Development, Horse

Care and Management and Outdoor Pursuits.

We also have a programme in Multi-Construction starting in September which will provide students

with the opportunity to try their hands at Plastering, Tiling, Painting & Decorating and Carpentry.

Overall, a really successful year for students. The

focus will now be to develop the existing programmes that we currently have on offer as well as sourcing new and exciting opportunities for

Young People in Leicester City to access.
