Family and friends of a man killed in a police chase near Ballantrae Sunday are attempting to raise money for his funeral with a Gofundme.com page dedicated to his memory.

Christopher Chartrand, 30, of Stouffville was the driver of the car that crashed in a ditch on Sunday morning, according to the Special

Investigation Unit.Investigators from the police watchdog

agency are continuing to probe the crash that occurred at Hwy. 48 and Vandorf Road, just north of the Maples of Ballantrae Golf Club.

The incident was sparked after a York Regional Police officer attempted to make a stop at about 2:20 a.m.

However, the driver failed to stop and

the officer pursued, the SIU said in a media release.

Chris has touched us all, the Gofundme.com listing reads. He was always upstanding and always helped others. Although he had tough times growing up, he always made the best with what he had. I know he has made his

Recycling, Green Bin and Waste Collection Services:Planning for the Future

The waste collection program underwent a major changein 2007 with the introduction of the Green bin programfor collection of organic waste and a long term (10 year)collection contract. The three stream collection system(Green bin, blue box recycling and garbage) has beenvery successful and has allowed the Town to divert morethat 67% of the waste away from disposal in landfills andincinerators.

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is seeking feedbackon its garbage and recycling curbside collection service. This survey will help us to improve the service to bettermeet your needs for the next 8 to 10 years.

    Take the survey now:http://www.townofws.ca/wastecollectionsurvey

The Survey will be available until Monday January 18, 2016.Results of the survey and all comments will be presentedto Town Council.

Stouffvilles Cordelia Morris celebrated her eighth birthday last month. Instead of asking for gifts for herself, she asked everyone to bring a gift for The Sun-Tribunes York Regions Media Groups Santa Fund. Cordelia dropped her gifts at the Stouffville Arena, where the Whitchurch-Stouffville Minor Hockey Association annually collects items during its Christmas drop-in. The event features a visit by Santa Claus himself.

hile a simple gift card can buy a sweater, it can also be a gift of empowerment espe-cially for a woman forced to leave an abusive home.

This year the southern York Region Media Group Santa Fund will help support 30 families associated with Yellow Brick House, a shelter for homeless and battered women and children, along with the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Gifts are being delivered this week.Donors include Stouffville citizens, busi-

nesses, service clubs and sports associations. Many of the women who find themselves

in shelters flee their home with nothing. Everyday items such as towels and bedding

are not on the important-to-take list when a woman flees, said Yellow Brick House direct services manager Joanne Borris.

And it is everyday items along with grocery store gift cards that top the wish list each year.

Toys and gifts are wonderful, said Borris. But that mother has to give her child a bath that night or has to go grocery shopping the next day. It can be horrific not to have those basic items or to struggle to buy a pack of diapers.

And gift cards, while simple, are the one of greatest gifts, bringing a sense of empower-ment, Borris said.

Many of these women had everything taken away, their home, their income, she said. A gift card can bring dignity in that this woman can pick something special for her child. It can give her a sense of control, some-thing she may never have had before.

Yellow Brick House has been associated with the Santa Fund program for the last few years and the communitys generosity never ceases to impress.

Im amazed the community continues to give, because they dont see the end result, they dont see the tears, Borris said. It is more than a gift. Its the giving gesture that

brings tears. The community cares without even knowing these women.

Studies in the last few years have shown calls to the shelters crisis line increase by about 30 per cent during November and December.

That shows us the holidays already bring a heightened level of stress, she said.

If we can place gifts under the tree

for those who otherwise would go

without, then we are making our

    communities stronger.

And finding themselves in a shelter is the last place anyone would want to be, especially during the holiday season.

Both shelter locations in Aurora and Markham are at capacity, Borris said.

At the Aurora shelter, 25 beds and seven cribs are occupied, while in Markham the 16 beds and five cribs are full, too.

Over the past decade, the Santa Fund has put gifts under the Christmas tree of more than 200 families in Markham, Thornhill, Richmond Hill and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Every year, the need is getting stronger, said Santa Fund co-ordinator Tyler Duncan of the York Region Media Group, noting its all about building community during a time of celebration and hope.

We need to help our neighbours who need a helping hand, he said. If we can place gifts under the tree for those who otherwise would go without, then we are making our communities stronger.

Each year the much needed items include winter accessories such as hats, gloves, boots and coats, along with grocery gift cards and everyday items.

For more information on the Santa Fund, call 905-943-6100.

    Delivery issues?

t was 33 years ago today I made the discovery in the produce aisle, of all locations.

I grew up in a small city and went on to live in Canadas largest. Christ-mas has always been the highlight of the calendar, for religious and family reasons.

But I pity those who have not experienced the small-town Christmas I came to know that day.

It was the afternoon of Christmas Eve 1982 and the aisles of the old Stouffville IGA were abuzz. Apparently, I wasnt alone in leaving work early to pop in for some replace-ment eggnog.

There, on opposite sides of the sweet potato display, two women talked. One was experiencing her first visit from her first grandchild, the other the return of kids from uni-versity.

They both acknowl-edged me kindly, which I assumed gave me some licence to eavesdrop, and report on this more than three decades later.

They went on to speak of mutual friends and Christmas parties, parades and other events where community connec-tions were re-established beneath the backdrop of the holidays. Similar smiley conversations were going on at the checkout and in the parking lot.

A few days previous, Id taken in a sight few single people without children do the classic elementary school Christmas concert.

Four of them in three nights in sweaty little school gyms. I didnt get it. I was an interloper, a tall guy blocking views and cameras way before the cellphone.

Didnt get the joy on the

faces of parents and the grandfolks, room permit-ting, watching their off-spring dressed up as a wise man that was allowed in our public schools back then or a spruce branch.

Suddenly it hit home at the supermarket. That Cheers-like camaraderie thats more difficult to find in Scarborough or Sudbury.

I still see it annually in the nativity scene outside Stouffville United Church or on Rudolphs nose atop the Morrison familys home, on Main Street west of the Tenth Line.

The population of Stouffville is five times what it was then.

The IGA is now Stouffville Fine Furniture. You can no longer buy produce, hardware, mens shoes or baby clothes in downtown Stouffville. The big banks are long gone. The council chambers? An arts centre.

But hopefully, youve found that same Christmas in your circle of friends, neighbourhood, hamlet, house of worship or com-munity organization.

    Merry Christmas, Whitchurch-Stouffville.

im and Andrea Jones recently received the perfect pre-Christ-mas gift, a gift so perfect they couldnt

wait until Dec. 25 to break the good news.

    And little wonder.Six-year-old Chala Jones,

a native of Addis Ababa, Ethio-pia, has a new home following approval of his parents adoption application heard recently by a judge in the East African capital. The three arrived back at Pear-son International Airport Dec. 10 where they were joyously greeted by Andreas parents and a niece.

Tim and Andrea reside in Markham. Tim is a director at Stouffvilles ONeill Funeral Home. Andrea is an ultra-sound technologist and clinic manager in Toronto.

It was five years ago, after tak-ing up residence in Markham, that Tim and Andrea began think-ing seriously about obtaining a child through adoption.

They first contacted the Chil-drens Aid Society, but found the process extremely long. Hoping to speed things up, they decided to go internationally. They dis-covered an adoption agency in Toronto that suited their pur-pose.

Since Andrea had travelled extensively in Africa, it was her desire to embrace a native child, boy or girl, from that continent. The agency recommended Ethio-pia.

Sounded like a great idea, said Tim, I was all for it.

But neither had ever visited that particular country before. Within a year they made two trips.

After the very first flight, a time period of 14 hours, they came face to face with their future son. He was then residing in an Addis Ababa orphanage. Through a means of match-up, the agency endeavoured to bring together those qualities exemplified by both the parents and the child.

(The agency) simplified everything, Andrea said. We knew instantly Chala was the one.

A court date was set for July.Although the language of

native Ethiopians is Amharic, Tim and Andrea encountered few bar-riers. To their relief, the adoption court judge spoke English.

Within minutes Chala was ours, said Andrea.

But the waiting period for a visa took four months. This caused the parents some con-cern, because the expiry deadline was fast approaching. The federal governments refugee program further log-jammed the proce-dure.

Thats when the office of Health Minister Jane Philpott stepped in and speeded up the process. Both Tim and Andrea praised the Markham-Stouffville MPs assistance.

    Chalas departure from the

    orphanage was unpretentious, Andrea recalled.

Holding his teddy bear, a book and a laptop computer, he simply waved goodbye and left a really brave little guy, she said.

Remarkable, agreed Tim.It was much the same during

the long flight home. He slept most of the way, said Andrea.

While the new dad has already picked up a few words of Amharic, son Chala is similarly employed learning English. Hes been regis-tered at Little Rouge Public School and will enter Grade 1 on Jan. 4. The school and an adjoining park are directly across the road from where he now lives.

We reside in a very multi-cultured neighbourhood, says Andrea. This is in our favour.

Its also important that Chala maintain his roots, adds Tim.

The fact he was wearing a Blue Jays cap when we arrived indi-cates Chala has already accepted one area of Canadian life. He also has his own hockey stick. Pizza, his favourite food, is also popular in Ethiopia, notes Tim.

Together, Tim and Andrea honestly feel the adoption was meant to be.

Chalas everything we could have wanted, says Tim.

The best Christmas gift ever, agrees Angela.

    Combined chorus

One had to hear it to believe it student choirs raising their voices in unison at the intersec-tion of Millard Street and Glad Park Avenue.

It occurred Friday, as boys and girls left Glad Park Public School and St. Mark Catholic School to begin their Christmas vacations.

My crossing-guard stop sign served as a seasonal baton.

The children, aged five to 14, filled the air with beautiful music while parents and bus drivers looked on.

Like nothing Id ever heard before, said one mother.

A bowling alley and movie theatre. They may come to Stouffville via the Stouffville Grace

Baptist Church, if Mayor Justin Altmann gets his wish. The mayor suggested to the churchs pastor Ellen

Wong, during last weeks town council meeting, they incorporate these activities into their plans.

I would lean to you to say this could be one of the newest, most exciting things you could do as a church, Altmann said, in part.

Wong, along with about 40 members of the churchs congregation, were at the council meeting requesting a site plan exemption from the interim control bylaw that is temporarily halting the construction of places of wor-ship on town employment lands while a land use study is being conducted.

The church purchased 54 Ringwood Dr. in 2014. The plan is to construct a church that caters to Stouffvilles

Mandarin and Cantonese-speaking Chinese residents. They dont speak English. We are here to bridge the

gap either by providing support to their needs in their mother tongues or directing them to the right depart-ment in the town, Wong told councillors.

Altmann, instead, wants to work with church offi-cials in finding them another location and when they do build, it would include the bowling alley and movie theatre.

These theatres would then be considered places of worship, the other areas would be commercial, he said.

Youd also have an income coming into the church, which you could use for outreach, for missionary work, Altmann said.

Wong did not receive the site exemption. Sandra Bolan

That Christmas concert on the front lawn of a Stouffville home brightened up the holi-days for a family in need of some cheer.

The Canadian Cancer Society arranged the event for Lynn Matthews and her family at their house this month.

Matthews, 43, has triple negative breast cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Matthews, her husband Dean and their four-year-old twins, Logan and Caitlyn, enjoyed the festive caroling from their front porch.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank everybody who came out to give this gift to my family and me, she said. Were so thankful for this special Christmas.

The singers included society employees, neighbours, community members and choirs from Markham District High School and Stouffville District Secondary School.

When the singing was over, the Matthews family and the carollers enjoyed hot choco-late and treats, provided by friends and a local Tim Hortons franchise.

Smiley is now an honorary RCMP service dog.

The 13-year-old blind golden retriever received the award Tuesday in Newmarket.

Because he serves his community much the same way their police dogs do, Smi-leys owner, Joanne George, said of why he received the honour.

Its the biggest honour weve ever had and Smileys done a lot, George said, noting he has met dog whisperer Cesar Millan and retired Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu, to name a few.

Smileys life will be immortalized in a pho-tography book to be published next fall. The tentative title is Smiley the Dog Who Sees with His Heart.

He goes far beyond a regular therapy dog because his photos give therapy to people, George said.

Smiley became an Internet sensation this year, later appearing on the The Meredith Vieira Show.

The Musselmans Lake resident is a St. Johns Ambulance therapy dog, who is cur-rently on Christmas break from his duties with Paws for Stories at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library. They resume in mid-January.

Most parking violations occur on Main Street and within the downtown, according to a con-sultants report presented to town council.

Main Street accounted for 33 per cent of Stouffvilles parking violations, according to the report by LEA Consulting Inc.

Since 2011, 653 parking tickets havd been given out on Main Street, according to the report that went to councillors last week. The second highest was for vehicles on Hoover Park Drive 145.

There are 100 on-street Main Street parking spots, with another 95 off-street spaces in the downtown, which are available to the public, according to the report.

Among the concerns noted by various stake-holders who participated in numerous meet-ings with the consultants, was store owners and employees parking on Main Street, while complaining to the city for the lack of customer parking in front of the store, according to the report.

Participating stakeholders included the mayor, some councillors as well as representa-tives from the municipalitys bylaw department, fire and emergency services, public works and development services. There were also people from the Stouffville Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Stouffville Working Group.

The stakeholders also noted there is no consistency or proactive parking enforcement

Got a parking problem? Have your sayRadio station wants help with move

WhiStle Radio wants to move down the FM dial so it can stay on the air.

The local radio station also wants to increase its sig-nal strength from 50 watts to approximately 450 watts, with an improved antenna, which would then increase its reach beyond urban Stouffville.

However, the volunteer-run station requires $8,000 for an engineering study that graphically displays the cov-erage area for all FM stations that could be affected by the application. It is a require-ment for WhiStle Radios application to Industry Cana-da and the CRTC for its move, according to a media release.

Representatives from the station requested an $8,000 grant from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville during the Dec. 15 council meeting.

Council deferred mak-ing a decision until budget deliberations take place next month.

Earlier this year, the CRTC ruled a new Scarborough sta-tion could take over WhiStles 102.7 FM frequency. WhiStle wants to move to 102.9 FM.

    Sandra Bolan

throughout the town. This could be attributed to the municipality

having insufficient enforcement staff, accord-ing to the report. In Whitchurch-Stouffville, the annual number of parking infractions, per 1,000 people, is 38.

Comparatively, Newmarkets rate is 78 per 1,000 people and Miltons is 339 per 1,000.

Both municipalities are deemed comparable based on size and built form, according to the report.

Other issues noted by those who partici-pated in the consultations was the lack of long-term parking in downtown for employees and tenants, as well as GO riders utilizing Main Street, business parking and the 6240 Main St. community centre.

    ... store owners and employees

    parking on Main Street, while

complaining to the city for the lack

of customer parking in front of the

    store.

In school zones, there is insufficient parking on school properties, however the stakeholders noted staff could park on nearby residential streets during the day.

Parked cars block fire routes and pick up/drop off areas are overflowing during peak times.

When it comes to residential areas, the stake-holders claimed new developments do not have enough parking to accommodate visitors.

Draft recommendations are expected to be presented to council Jan. 19, with a final report to council April 19. A public meting is slated for Feb. 18.

Dish soap. Shampoo. Toothpaste and a toothbrush. A pillow. Towel. Bed sheets. Food. Winter coat. Pyjamas.

This is what a typical Christmas wish list looks like for people who are being aided by Victim Services of York Region (VSY).

VSY is a not-for-profit organization that works in conjunction with York Regional Police, OPP and York Region fire services to meet the short-term needs of victims of crime and tragic circumstance.

Toy Mountain is lovely but we have so many families that need the basics, said Gil-lian Freeman, executive director of VSY.

There are actually 35 families in need of help this season.

One Whitchurch-Stouffville couple Ashley and Marc Wade has decided to go beyond helping support a family. They have instead donated $1 million. It is the largest donation VSY has ever received.

The money will be used to create a suicide bereavement group, as no such group exists in York Region, according to Freeman.

Weve never had the funds. Not even the dollars for outreach, she said.

Ashley Wade, the co-founder of SleepBelt, met Freeman last year and the Wades spon-sored 11 families, as well as started the spring and back-to-school care package programs. They also donated $100,000, plus money for care package programs.

Its good to know the money will go to the families who need it, Ashley said.

Its the first time Ive seen every single dol-lar go directly to families in need, said Marc, a philanthropist and financier.

Weve seen what they did with $100,000 and what impact it had, he said.

Eventually, the Wades want to create a new crisis centre for VSY, which is currently housed in a small office, with no showers or play rooms for children.

Marc called the situation horrendous. While women and children sleep in shel-

ters, their husbands are in jail, with a bed to sleep on, a roof over their heads, three square meals a day, clothes on their backs and even access to computers.

VSY receives its funding from the Minis-try of the Attorney General, United Way and

Couple gives $1 M to aid victimsWhitchurch-Stouffvilles Ashley and Marc Wade have donated $1 million to Victim Services of York Region. The organizations executive director is Gillian Freeman (right).

Victim Services of York Region was created out of a recommendation from the May-Iles inquest.Arlene May suffered numerous violent episodes at the hands of Randy Iles. Randy killed Arlene and then committed suicide in Collingwood in 1996.Among the 1998 inquest recommendations was the creation of a seamless domestic violence program across Ontario.Between April 1, 2014, and March 31, 2015, VSYs fiscal year, they helped 7,000 people in the region. They were people who have been affected by homi-cide, including attempted murder; serious physical assault; domestic violence; sexual assault; hate crimes and human trafficking. If youve heard it in the news, were probably involved, VSYs Gillian Freeman said.In the past couple of years, VSY has had a 1,233 per cent increase in human trafficking cases. From 2014 to 2015, there was a 25 per cent increase, according to Freeman. Roughly 70 per cent of VSYs total client base are domestic or family violence cases with tragic circum-stances making up the majority of the remaining cases save and except for sexual assaults, human trafficking, elder abuse, homicide or attempted homi-cide, according to Freeman. VSY is called immediately when the police arrive on the scene of one of these incidents.Theyre world is completely shattered and they need the assistance to process it, Freeman said, noting the first 24 to 72 hours are the most important. Youre disoriented, youre confused. The world doesnt make sense.

    Denise Jones ProDuctions inc.

through Town of Richmond Hill bingos. It has an annual operating budget of

roughly $800,000.We are still incredibility under

resourced, Freeman said.VSY has eight trained counsellors on call

24 hours a day and four crisis counsellors. Thats it, Freeman said, noting the Region of Peel, with the same population, has seven crisis counsellors.

I feel extremely blessed that the Wades have come into our lives, she said.

Marc and Ashley have changed our lives here. To be able to assist people who steal our hearts daily, Im forever thankful for that.

Katey Merksamer of Stouffville signs letter of intent to play for Stetson University.

    By Michael [email protected]

When Katey Merksamer attends university in Florida next year, she anticipates spending a good portion of her time on sand.

The 17-year-old Stouffville resident wont be lying on the beach, relaxing.

Instead, Merksamer will be taking to the sand court to play beach volleyball for Stetson University Hatters womens squad.

A Grade 12 student at St. Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham where she was top senior female athlete last year, Merk-samer recently signed her letter of intent to attend Stetson after entertaining other athlet-ic scholarship offers from schools including Florida Atlantic and Northern Florida.

Merksamer acknowledged it was a tough decision electing to sign her letter of intent to attend Stetson.

She says she took several factors into con-sideration after visiting the Orlando-area school, which was ranked sixth in the NCAA Division One last year.

Obviously the weather is a big selling point in playing beach volleyball, she said. But the campus was beautiful and smaller in size and I felt comfortable with that.

First playing organized indoor volleyball when she was 11 years old, Merksamers introduction to beach volleyball came just two years later.

From the moment I got on the beach, I knew it was the game for me, she said. I love the strategy thats involved in the beach game and my quickness in the sand has always helped me succeed.

Since making her debut in the beach game, Merksamer has progressed her way up the competitive ranks to where she was a member of the 18U Team Ontario beach team last year and had the opportunity to train with some of the best players in the province all summer at Ashbridges Bay.

As well, the five-foot, eight-inch Merk-samer served up a silver medal in the 2015

Ontario championships.Merksamer was quick to credit a couple of

individuals. They include Daniel Shermer, who Merk-

samer first became acquainted with as a skills development coach in indoor volleyball with the Markham Stingers.

When Merksamer began playing beach volleyball, Shermer also ran a development program at Camp Robin Hood in neighbour-ing Markham.

From the moment I got on the beach, I

knew it was the game for me.

While at the camp, Shermer took care-ful note of her passion for the game and helped her get into a recruiting combine in Florida that attracted coaches who were seek-ing student-athletes. Merksamer calls it her big break.

While working with Shermer, Merksamer was introduced to Daniel Dearing, a member of Canadas national team.

Dearing became Merksamers personal coach and mentor.

Kristina Hernandez, Stetson University head womens beach volleyball coach, is elat-ed to have Merksamer included as one of six incoming student-athletes to her team next year.

Katey is smaller but is extremely explosive and quick in the sand, she said in a Stetson University athletic department news release. This gives her a lot of range and versatility. I look forward to seeing her contribute imme-diately in our program.

Intending to do her undergraduate work in psychology and hoping to pursue a law degree, Merksamer said she hasnt set her sights too far down the road as to where she hopes her volleyball career might take her.

But in the short term, she will attempt to qualify for international play next year.

Trevor Carrick will be spending a little time off the roster of the Char-lotte Checkers.

The 21-year-old Stouffville resi-dent, who is in his second season toiling with the American Hockey League, is not injured.

Rather, Carrick will be represent-ing Canada at the 2015 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland that begins Saturday and concludes Dec. 31.

A fourth-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2012 National Hockey League draft, who was assigned to their AHL affiliate in Charlotte, Carrick will be joined by his Checkers teammate Drew MacIntyre on Team Canadas roster when it begins play against Avtomo-bilist Yekaterinburg Saturday.

For Carrick, his appearance in the Spengler Cup will mark his first expe-rience representing Canada interna-tionally.

Its also one hes looking forward to partaking in on the bigger ice sur-face, which will mark another first in his budding professional career.

Its awesome, Carrick said from his Stouffville residence Monday. Ive never had a chance to experi-ence something like this.

In being chosen to play for Team Canada, Carrick recalled he first received word a couple of days ago from Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis.

During that conversation with Francis, he said the news caught him totally by surprise.

Carrick acknowledged he knew little about what the Spengler Cup was all about.

That was, until he did some

research and found out Canada always takes on a couple of players from the AHL.

One of his three brothers, Sam, plays for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

Amassing seven goals and 13 assists in 28 games so far this sea-son with Charlotte, after coming off a rookie campaign in which he had seven goals and 25 helpers last sea-son, Carrick said he does not know at this juncture what his role on Team Canada will be.

But he speculated it might be to bolster their special teams and in particular, the power play.

I know I can move the puck well, he said.

Spending an early Christmas with his family in Stouffville Mon-day, Carrick was also packing his bags to depart for Davos Tuesday.

Im sure itll be a cool experi-ence, Carrick said.

Team Canada has won the Spen-gler Cup 12 times since first taking part in 1984.

Spartan girls ice first league win

Playing the finalists from last years York Region Athletic Association tier one championship in their first four regular season games this year served the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans girls hockey team well.

While the results of those contests did not bode well for the Spartans, the lessons learned from those outings paid off, after they skated off with their first win of the season in a 5-1 decision over the host Markham District High School Marauders last week.

Team captain Anna Horner and Georgia Bender each scored a pair of goals for the Spartans, now 1-3-1-3 on the season and in fourth place.

Mychala Major added the other marker. Our first two games were against (Auroras) St. Maximilian Kolbe (cur-

rently in first place and were last years finalists) and then we played our next two against (Markhams) Bill Crothers (last years YRAA champions) and by playing those two teams first that toughened us up, said Spartans head coach Brian Shankman.

It was a good team win. We have two lines and both were great. We played loose.

The Spartans are scheduled to resume league play when they host third-place Markham (1-2-2-4) at the Stouffville Clippers Sports Complex Jan. 5 at 3 p.m.

The Stouffville District Second-ary School Spartans elected to give Evan Farrell his first start in goal in a York Region Athletic Association regular season tier one boys hockey game against the visiting Bill Croth-ers Secondary School Colts from Markham.

The Grade 9 student did not dis-appoint as he helped the Spartans rebound from a loss earlier in the week to hand the first-place Colts their first loss of the season in a closely contested 3-2 outcome.

Landon Boothby, Ryan Smith and Luke Sear scored for the Spartans, who battled the Colts to a 1-1 tie after the first period before taking the upper hand at 3-2 through two.

The Spartans (3-3-0-6) next play Markhams St. Brother Andre at the Clippers Complex Jan. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
