Academy Storytelling
Hero's The
journey
Unveiling the Main
Characters of the Story
The central elements of the story gather and clash. 12 people from different walks of life, different cities, different
cultures, yet who share something they have in common. As we begin this learning process, we first take time to
understand our personal stories – What has influenced our stories and where are we now? Vulnerability, Courage and
Solidarity will be the main themes of this entry stage.
Building the Setting, the
Frames and the Scale Now, let’s set the scene.
Where are we? To advance in the story, we need to understand the broader context in which we are operating – the world we live in
today, as well as the world we will create in the following 4 days. At this stage, Responsibility,
Ownership and Commitment will be our main focus.
Exploring the Romanian
village life and culture
The ASTRA Village Museum in Sibiu is one of the largest open air museums in Europe and it brings together many facets of Romanian traditions and culture from various regions. It will be
our host in exploring Cultural Storytelling as we craft stories using its exhibits ranging from houses, churches,
windmills, small mines and fishing houses.
Conquering the Old City’s
History and Science Sibiu’s Old Town is a wonderful
display of Transylvanian architecture and history. Many of its structures
contain rich folklore about historical events, leaders, legacies and
practices from the dark ages. This place will help us explore
Historical Storytelling, looking to unravel what is it that we can learn
from our past.
Harvesting the stories of
ordinary people
Besides the stories of Sibiu’s culture and history, there are great stories in the making as we speak. In this segment, we will
challenge ourselves to connect with stories of ordinary people, people who we might have otherwise ignored.
If bricks and stones can tell stories, imagine what stories are lying behind the individuals that live amongst us?
The Sheppard’s Dome
The Păltiniș mountain resort is situated at 1440 m altitude, being the highest resort in Romania. It lies in a conifer forest
and in summer it is sought for its peacefulness. Here we will engage with a Sheppard who will invite you to see
life, nature and the world through his eyes, as well as taste some fine products of his work.
The Hero’s Greatest
Fight: With Oneself
“Great Tree Top Adventure! 3 Hours of Great Fun!” That is what some people say after experiencing Arka Park, an adventure park accessible for both children and adults. The aim of this experience is to challenge our fears, step into the realm
of the unknown and take risks. As the heroes of our own stories, we must learn what lies
behind every great achievement – risk and sacrifice.
The Story of Today and
Tomorrow After all these experiences, one must wonder – What’s next?
Every hero on a journey must prepare his comeback and return to his
homeland. What will come of this return? How do I see my story today? How do I feel my story will evolve in
the following days, months and even years?
Our stories are still very much unwritten…
Telling stories for the
next generations…
As we return back home, we realize that we have a huge responsibility as our stories will be the ones that will inspire (or not) our future generations. What kind of stories are we looking
to pass on to our children? Not just our written or spoken stories. Our strongest legacy will
be the stories they will tell about our actions and about the community we have helped to create.
Our children deserve a better world and a better story…
Learning Manual The Learning Manual will be our companion in our journey.
As we go through our sessions we will explore Key Ingredients in Creating Stories, The Historical Themes in
Storytelling, Character, Dialogue and Setting Development, Story Typologies and Public Speaking.
Besides traditional storytelling, we will also look into stories and themes specific to our times – from the extinction of
man to stories of retrospective years, from stories that take millions of years to stories that take a few hours in a room
or even under the microscope.
The Storytelling Academy will take place between the 21st and the 24th of August in Sibiu, one of the jewels of Transylvania. Our venue will be the Diana Hostel which is part of the ASTRA Village Museum Complex and as you already saw, we will explore several more sites that Sibiu has to offer, weather permitting. The next slides will give you more information on the meals, travelling to Sibiu and the payment options available.
The meals provided include the Dinner in Thursday the 21st up to the Lunch on Sunday the 24th. The food will be provided by Restaurant Cristinne Catering and each participant can create a personalized menu according to his/her preferences from the options made available.
