Stories can be told in the Present

but normally they are told in the Past.

Yesterday, he was luckier. He had been on the road for half an hour when suddenly he saw a lorry. The men in the lorry had been fishing. They were quite happy, at least, they were feeling very satisfied. They had brought a boxful of fish with them.
