The Story Behind the ProgramIn an effort to support one of our client’s initiatives to create a better approach to safety in his company, we introduced stop think act safely™. Eventually the safety professional integrated our safety icon into every part of the company’s safety promotion campaign and it is still in use today.

When this safety professional left the company he took stop think act safely™ with him. When asked why, he said “Because it is simple and to the point and describes exactly what the employees need to do while at work and at home. And experience tells me that once we successfully establish a stop think act safely™ mindset, we will reduce accidents and lost time in all our facilities. So why reinvent when something already works?”

Many safety professionals who came in contact with these programs began to integrate stop think act safely™ in their culture.

It became obvious that stop think act safely™ was resonating with the safety community. This conclusion was reinforced while making presentations to prospective customers - as they too were drawn to the safety icon and asked if they could use it in their program.

So rather than reinvent the wheel each time we discuss program options with our clients, we now offer a program that helps company’s create the stop think act safely™ mindset using a wide assortment of interconnected tools and tactics.

Creating a culture of commitment to stop think act safely™

Most company’s have...

Yet they continue to have accidents.

Why?Because you have three kinds of employees: non-compliant, compliant and committed. Each influencing the other:

• Non-compliant – “I will not follow your safety and quality rules, because I am convinced the only way to get high production is to take risks and shortcuts.”

• Compliant – “I will follow your safety and quality procedures, as long as someone (a manager, a supervisor or a peer observer) is watching me. But when that person leaves, I’ll take more risks and shortcuts.”

• Committed – “I will follow the safety and quality procedures in the moment of choice, when nobody is watching. This is who I am.”

Sound familiar? So how do you get non-compliant and compliant employees to be committed to safety, in that moment of choice when nobody is watching?

“To truly get commitment from your employees requires something that’s rarely delivered by today’s managers and leaders: workforce engagement and positive reinforcement.”

BillSimsJr.

Why it worksWhen fully adopted as your cultural safety “icon” through engagement activities and positive reinforcement, stop think act safely™ becomes a practice within your company that every employee will come to recognize. Eventually it becomes an expectation that is ingrained into the collective fabric of the culture - transporting employees beyond compliance toward a “committed to work safe” mindset where they follow safety procedures and practices in the moment of choice, when nobody is watching.

When employees take a minute to reflect on the personal commitment they made to themselves and to their families friends and co-workers and think about the task at hand, they will make better decisions.

And if they practice these steps at work and at home and they support these behaviors in each another, your company will experience a shift toward becoming an interdependant culture that will result in a reduction in accidents.

Our RoleIn addition to providing you with an easy to launch program that helps you and your supervisors succeed at instilling a commitment to work safe, we support your efforts througout the process ensuring that you obtain the results you are seeking.
