Stop Acid Attacks

Stop Acid Attacks is a call, a campaign against the brutality of acid violence. We recognize acid attack as the most inhumane, barbaric form of assault that leaves indelible scars on the life of the person attacked. Recognising the urgency to bring this burning issue and stories of valiant fighters who have survived this violence, we launched on March 8th, 2013.

Our aim is to combat the menace of acid attacks on as many fronts as it demands. Firstly, we seek to provide urgent and adequate medical, legal and financial aid for the survivors. In the longer term, we strive to rehabilitate them by finding alternate sources of income so they can embark on the road to self sustenance. We work as a bridge between survivors and the society, as the two come to stand isolated from each other when a girl is attacked with acid. Our mandate inspires us to first seek out all those survivors of acid attacks who have yet not emerged after this grave assault. We seek to provide them urgent and adequate medical and legal aid, and rehabilitate them by finding alternate sources of income. We connect them with potential donors and supporters for these urgent needs. Most significantly, our endeavor is to motivate and strengthen them. To reassure them that confidence can be the spring in their step, and faith can fuel their dreams.

When we launched on March 8th, 2013, a determined resolve to bring these unseen, unknown stories to the fore, guided us.

The Stop Acid Attacks campaign works to chase immediate and long term goals. Our immediate goals are providing sustenance and shelter to acid attack survivors. When we launched, we noticed that many survivors, who came to Delhi for treatment and surgery had to spend their days by the road, without a soul to care and nourish them. We realized the need for a clean, safe and comfortable environment for survivors and their families, where they could stay while receiving medial aid. This spot of shade and succour, we called Chhavn. It provides complimentary bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and a safe and clean atmosphere for those in dire need of it.

SHEROES' HANGOUT With a lot of zest, Stop Acid Attacks campaign is launching a milestone project, Sheroes’ Hangout at Agra. It is basically a cafe, which will be run by acid attack #Survivors and will house a holistic centre for the campaign in Agra. This project has been undertaken by team SAA to rehabilitate the acid attack survivors, so that they can lead a life of dignity and can get back to be a part of the mainstream #society.

The name, Sheroes’ is an etymological hybrid of the words, ‘She' and 'Hero'. It reflects the true identities of the acid attack fighters who have sustained and won their battles of torture, humility and pain. A new dawn has descended upon them with the set up of Sheroes' Hangout.

At Sheroes’ HangoutReaders' Cafe: You do need to munch on when chilling out with friends. And revolutions, too, are not

brought out with an empty belly. So, a tiny cafe serves delicious bites round the hour, along with awesome beverages. The hangout also houses an ever-growing (through contributions) library, so pick your read, before you take the table.

Activism workshop: Campaigning for victims of acid attacks helped us realize that most of them come from a background where education is still limited to learning the basics of reading and writing. Using a computer or a mobile phone to connect and create still remains out of reach for many young girls being brought up in miserable circumstances through out the country. The activism workshops at Sheroes Hangout are aimed at training girls to use computers and other gadgets and helping them utilize social media as a real tool of empowerment and outreach.

Programmes based on basic legal awareness, judicial and political procedures, cinema, art & culture and gender issues keep the workshops engaging and lively.

Handicrafts & Exhibition Space: While the handicraft work of our Sheroes is always on display at the Hangout for sale, the exhibition space will provide a venue to many others in the country to come exhibit/perform their skills. The idea is to organize gatherings like poetry and book readings, jewellery and other design exhibits to engage Sheroes in a constructive activity, while also generating funds to run this space.

The government and its mechanism to support the needy in this country. So, we ask you. We ask you to take the onus of this shame. The shame of witnessing more and more girls being burnt, either to death or left to live a walled life, and for turning our heads away in glory.

What we will collect through this project would be nothing but a small token of motivation for Neetu. A gesture that will let her know the people are with her despite all odds. We shall not let these girls lose their faith in US, the people of this country.
