STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES FOOTBALL GAME 2 • Sept 10, 2011 Stony Brook Seawolves Football Game NotesSTONY BROOK SEAWOLVES FOOTBALL

2017 Stony Brook Football 3

HITTING A MILESTONEStony Brook picked up the seventh conference win against Maine, the most in school history. The seven CAA Football wins are the most since joining the league in 2013 and also surpass the six Big South wins the program picked up in 2011. The 2011 team posted a perfect 6-0 conference mark and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

IT’S A 10, A 10The Seawolves earned their 10 win of the season with the victory over Lehigh in the opening round of the postseason. The 10 wins ties the program record for wins in a season with the 2012 squad that also claimed 10 victories.

SEVEN LEADS TO 11Stony Brook’s seven league wins helped the Seawolves nab 11 2017 All-CAA Football honors. LT Timon Parris, RB Stacey Bedell, WR Ray Bolden and FB Cal Daniels were named to the first team. Parris (2016) and Bolden (2015) picked up their second first team honors. The 11 members are the most for Stony Brook since joining the league in 2013. The four first team selections are also the most for the Seawolves since becoming a member of the conference.

A FAMILY AFFAIRStony Brook RBs Stacey Bedell and Jordan Gowins share more than just the carries out of the backfield, the two are second cousins. Bedell, a senior from Mastic Beach, N.Y., and Gowins, a junior transfer from Bellport, N.Y., have family blood running through their veins. The duo completed their first season together in 2016 with a combined 283 carries for 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns and in 2017 combined to gain 1,253 yards on 251 carries with 14 touchdowns.

IN THE CHARTSRB Stacey Bedell completed his career ranked among the top five in several of Stony Brook’s career rushing records. He finished second in career 100 yard games (14), second in career touchdowns (31), third in career rushing yards (2,954) and third in career carries (562). WR Ray Bolden completed his career ranked second in career receptions (171), third in career receiving yards (2,081), sixth in receiving touchdowns (15) and fourth in career 100-yard receiving games (7).

FIRST TIME STARTERSA trio of Seawolves earned a start for the first time in their careers at USF. C Joe Detorie, DT Jordan Scarbrough, and CB Gavin Heslop each started for the first time. WR Nick Anderson earned his first start in week two’s game at URI. C Anthony Catapano received his first career start against Towson. DB Synceir Malone picked up his first career start against Delaware in week six. DB Augie Contressa picked up his first career start against Lehigh in week 12.

FIRST TIMERSA total of 19 Seawolves saw their first collegiate action this season. USF: DB Augie Contressa, LB EJ Fineran, TE Zach Lucas, DB Justin Burns, DS Billy Barber, CB TJ Morrison, DL Brandon Lopez, DL Odean Gilzene, DL Tahriq Gordon and WR Seba Nekhet. URI: QB Tyquell Fields, DB Elijah Duff, OL Anthony Catapano and OL Ian McLean. Sacred Heart: DL Peterson Octavien, QB Hasan Farraj, OL Brennan Souhrada and OL Jaelen Vazquez. UNH: PK Nick Courtney.

LIOTINE MAKES HISTORY, TWICEJunior RB Donald Liotine made history twice in the victory at William & Mary on Sept. 30. He became the first player to score both a rushing TD and a receiving TD in the same game since Miguel Maysonet did it against Central Conn. State on Sept. 1, 2012. Liotine scored on a nine-yard run and a 61-yard pass in the victory. His 61-yard pass from QB Joe Carbone was also the longest pass for a touchdown since Adrian Coxson pulled down an 83-yard TD from Conor Bednarski vs. W&M on Sept. 27, 2014.

CARBONE’S CAREER GAMESStony Brook junior QB Joe Carbone set career-highs in passing on four different weeks this season. He tossed what was his career-high 190 yards in the win at Rhode Island on Sept. 9. He followed that up the next week with a career-best three touchdowns passing in the victory over Sacred Heart and against Towson he once again set his career-high in passing yards with 242 in the win. Carbone then tossed for 272 yards against Delaware to set his new career best.

MAKING THE FIELDStony Brook made the Field of 24 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship for the third time overall and the first since becoming a member of CAA Football. The Seawolves are now 3-3 in playoff games, having won at home in 2011, 2012 and 2017.

ADVANCING ON...Stony Brook advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship for the third time in school history. The Seawolves also advanced in 2011 and 2012 with home wins.

JACKSON SAVES BEST FOR LASTWR Harrison Jackson has saved his best performances for his final three games. At Maine, against Lehigh and at JMU, the graduate student had pulled in a total of 13 receptions for a total of 346 yards and three touchdowns, including hauling in the “Hail Mary” to win the game at Maine. Jackson’s three 100-yard receiving games were the only ones of his career.

BOLDEN BESTS HIS CAREER HIGHSenior WR Ray Bolden surpassed his career-high in receiving yards three times already this season. The Euless, Texas, native hauled in 121 yards receiving at Rhode Island and then did one better with 125 yards against Towson. He then collected 136 receiving yards against Delaware. He then pulled down a career-best 13 receptions in the win at Richmond to go with 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

EXPANDING LAVALLEKenneth P. LaValle Stadium underwent an expansion project during the offseason that added 2,000 seats in the north end zone to make the current capacity 12,300. A new freestanding structure that includes a concession stand and bathrooms was also added in the north end zone behind the scoreboard.

VS. FBSThe Sept. 2 season-opener marked the 10th time Stony Brook faced a FBS opponent on the gridiron. The Seawolves are now 1-8 against FBS teams in the previous meetings. Stony Brook meet Toledo to open the season in 2015, but the game was not completed due to weather.

AGAINST THE FBS RANKSWhen the Seawolves faced No. 21/19 USF, it marked the first time Stony Brook battled an FBS ranked team.

FACING NO. 1Stony Brook’s game at No. 1 James Madison marked the second time the Seawolves faced the nation’s top ranked team. The Seawolves also battled No. 1 in the second round of the playoffs when they played at Sam Houston State on Dec. 3, 2011. Stony Brook fell short in that meeting, 34-27.

AGAINST THE FCS RANKSStony Brook in now 9-19 all-time against FCS ranked opponents with the victories over No. 12 New Hampshire and No. 17 Richmond this season. The Seawolves’ also posted two ranked wins in 2016. Stony Brook earned a 42-14 win over No. 2 Richmond and a 13-9 season-opening victory against No. 19 North Dakota. Richmond’s No. 2 ranking equals the highest ranked opponent to come into Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (No. 2 Towson on Sept. 28, 2013). The win over Richmond also marked the program’s first victory over a top 10 team.

BLOCK AND TOUCHDOWNStony Brook’s special teams have blocked two punts for touchdowns this season. The Seawolves accomplished this at USF in the season opener and against in the home victory against Sacred Heart.

CAA FOOTBALL OPENERSStony Brook began its fifth season as a member of CAA Football last week against URI. The Seawolves improved to 4-1 in the conference openers since joining the league with the 35-18 victory over the Rams. A win at URI in 2013, an OT loss at home to No. 13 William & Mary in 2014, a victory at home over No. 13 New Hampshire in 2015 and a home win against No. 2 Richmond in 2016 are how the Seawolves have opened conference play each of the previous seasons.

Since becoming Stony Brook’s head football coach in the spring of 2006, Chuck Priore’s tenure can be described as an usher. He’s ushered the Seawolves through two conferences (Northeast and Big South), and for the past three seasons, CAA Football. During that time, Priore has ushered the program to the upper echelon of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), guiding SBU from 20 scholarships to a fully-funded program of 63 scholarship, the maximum allowed at the FCS level.

Under Priore’s leadership, Stony Brook posted a number of firsts - a win over a Football Bowl Subdivision (Army), a 10-win season, an at-large berth to the Division I Football Championship and produced the Seawolves first NFL player when Will Tye joined the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent and enjoyed a very successful rookie campaign.

In Priore’s previous 11 seasons at the helm of the Seawolves, SBU has collected at least five wins, including that 10-win season in 2012 and a nine-win season in 2011.

In 2016, Priore’s 11th at the helm of the Seawolves, Stony Brook posted a 5-6 mark, including four CAA Football wins. The Seawolves opened the season with a thrilling home victory over No. 19 North Dakota and followed it two weeks later with a commanding victory over second-ranked and defending CAA Footbal champion Richmond in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

In 2015, the Seawolves posted a 5-5 record and went 3-5 in the CAA, including a 31-6 victory at home over No. 13 New Hampshire, the highest ranked opponent Stony Brook has even beaten. Priore’s squad had to overcome numerous injuries to reach .500, but were highlighted by the CAA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year and All-America DE Victor Ochi. Ochi anchored the SBU defense that ranked first in the FBC is yards allowed with 250.1 and once again among the nation’s best in scoring defense.

During the 2015 season, Priore reached the 100 career wins milestone as a head coach. Stony Brook defeated Rhode Island, 19-7, in Kingston on Nov. 14 to accomplish the feat.

The 2014 season once again featued five victories that included wins on the road at Towson and Elon. The Seawolves also claimed four wins in the CAA to finish the top half of the conference. Stony Brook was led by All-America selection Christian Richard that solidified a defensive unit the ranked among the FCS’ best in yards and points allowed. RB Stacey Bedell, TE Will Tye and WR Adrian Coxson anchored the offense. Bedell rushed for over 1000 yards and nine scores, while Tye pulled down five touchdowns and Coxson had six TDs and over 600 receiving yards.

In 2013 Stony Brook, which won five games for an ninth straight season, went 3-5 in its first season in the CAA, including wins over No. 25 James Madison and in-state rival Albany.

Priore ushered Stony Brook to the upper echelon of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). In 2012, the Seawolves hosted and won a playoff game and advanced to the second round of the Division I Football Championship.

The season featured a number of milestones - Stony Brook beat Army, 23-3, for its first win over an FBS program; Miguel Maysonet finished as the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding player, was named to a program-record seven All-America Teams and became the first SBU football player to be invited to the NFL Combine.

Stony Brook, which won a program-best 10 wins, moved to the Colonial Athletic Association, considered the “SEC” of FCS football.

For his efforts, Priore was named AFCA Regional Co-Coach of the year, and earned a contract extension through the 2020 season.
