Join the Fun – Girl Scouts for EveryoneSubmitted by Risa Weinberger, Girl Scout Volunteer

It may still be summer, but the Girl Scout Bush Lopez Service Unit Team is working hard to set up a great calendar for the coming school year. Service unit activities will include a ‘Family Fun Day’ at Life Time Fitness, ‘Tree Planting’ in an area park, a ‘Mother Daughter Holiday Celebration’, ‘Girl Scout World Thinking Day’, of course the annual ‘Father Daughter Gala Ball’ for elementary Girl Scouts, and the return of the ‘Bush Lopez Service Camping Weekend’. The Bush Lopez Service Unit consists of Girl Scout troops in Stone Oak, Vineyard, Rogers Ranch, and Tuscany Heights areas. This service unit is the second largest service unit in the entire Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas Council and one of the most active service units in the San Antonio area.

New troops will be forming during the last couple of weeks of August and the fi rst couple of weeks in September. Girls in kindergarten – 12th grade can become a Girl Scout. The most important component of the Girl Scout program is the adult volunteers.

Without the volunteers stepping up to take on leadership roles, girls are left out of this wonderful organization. As the Girl Scout Mission Statement says, “Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confi dence, and character, who make the world a better place.”

Be a part of one of the largest female based organizations in the world. Today, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts—2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

Girls develop courage, confi dence, and character when they join Girl Scouts

The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County (DSABC) is proud to announce our “Shop with a Sheriff” Back-to-School Event. This program is designed to unite our uniformed deputies with local disadvantaged school children to enable them to put their best foot forward when starting the new school year.

The event will take place at Wal-Mart Supercenter - Jones Maltsberger Rd. on Saturday, August 17th. The children will be screened through the local community centers and Human Services for fi nancial need. Our goal is to spend $200.00 per child and to assist 100 children who need assistance, through the support of donations from our citizens and business community here in San Antonio.

The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County strongly believes that we will make a difference in the lives of our children and families here in the San Antonio area and surrounding communities and we are grateful for your support as we begin our programming efforts. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated by the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County as we strive to help the community.

For additional information on Shop with a Sheriff, you may contact us by phone at: (210) 390-4420 or visit our website www.dsabc.org.

Is your Stone Oak neighborhood planning a Community Garage

Sale?If so, your Stone Oak Architectural Review Committee (ARC) would like to remind you of the following:

The Stone Oak Master Plan and Sign Policy dictates all signage on display within Stone Oak must be approved by the ARC. Signage not submitted for review is considered unapproved, and is subject to removal.

Community garage sale signs must be professionally made, and in a metal frame similar to real estate signs.

Sign submittal forms can be found under the “Governing Documents and Policies” tab on our website at www.stoneoakpoa.com. Click on the PDF for “The Stone Oak Sign Policy with Application Form.”

The submittal form must be signed by an authorized HOA representative, and detail sign dimensions, as well as requested dates of placement and placement locations. (Signs may be displayed for a maximum of 6 days.)

A photo of the sign should be attached, as well as a site plan indicating requested placement locations. Please remember no signs may be placed in medians, and only one sign per community entrance is permitted.

Once you submit to the ARC, we will keep your garage sale sign photos on fi le. Therefore, each subsequent sale, you will only need to provide a form with revised requested display dates. Two weeks advance notice is requested.

Please contact our offi ce with any questions at 210-490-9481.

Although a variety of mowing heights are recommended for each turf species, our rule is always to mow at the high end of the range.

Often, we’re asked about lawn mowing and its relation to maintaining a healthy, drought-tolerant lawn. Although we discourage expansive areas of grass, there are ways to reduce how much water your turf needs.

Of all the suggestions and recommendations you may hear, there are two key factors that will help make your lawn more drought-tolerant: mowing height and mowing frequency.

The best adapted turf grass species for our area include:

Bermuda — Unless you’re mowing a putting green or sports field, we suggest mowing it at 2 inches.•Buffalo and all native grasses — Mowing twice a year is sufficient for native grasses; set the mower at the highest •setting.St. Augustine — Maintain the mower level at 3 inches.•Zoysia — A mowing height of 2 1/2 inches is ideal.•

Just as important as how high you mow is how often. Turf responds favorably to frequent mowing. The general rule is to never cut more than 1/3 of the total blade. This roughly translates to a once-a-week mowing schedule.

If maintaining a lawn is your preference, help make it more drought-friendly. Mow high and mow often.

Reduce brain drain in your kids over summer(BPT) - The second the school bell rings signaling that school’s out for summer, it seems that children immediately forget everything they’ve studied over the past nine months. When they return to school in the fall, playing catch up takes time.

Studies show that this brain drain can result in as much as a few months’ worth of learning lost over the summer. The achievement gap widens in the fall as students struggle to “relearn” what they knew the spring prior.

“Typically, teachers spend the fi rst week to the fi rst two months of the school year trying to bring student knowledge up to a specifi c level in order to advance their learning,” says Debra Hill, associate professor in the College of Education at Argosy University, Chicago and immediate past president of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. “This is found most commonly in math, where review can last through the fi rst full semester in some grade levels.”

So when all your kids want is down time, how do you keep their minds tuned up?

While proactive summer learning can certainly improve a child’s retention rate, the way that they learn in the summer may be different from how they learn while in the

classroom. “Learning is an ongoing, lifelong activity,” says Hill. “A mental break for your kids in the summer should occur not based on learning, but based on the activities students engage in related to learning. Summer should be about more reading for fun, exploration, communication and application of what they have learned.”

Family meals, trips to the store, collecting shells on the beach, heading to sports camp and almost any other activity can have a learning component if parents engage in conversation with their kids about the activity. “Learning a new skill, or about a new place, or a different way of doing something, or meeting new people are ways of studying. There will not be a test, yet the new information contributes to the overall mental growth of the individual,” says Hill.

“Keep your students actively engaged in the world,” says Kevin Yeoman, an instructor in the Game Art & Design program at The Art Institute of Fort Worth. “The more they can apply their book knowledge to new experiences and activities they enjoy, the more learning will take place.

“You don’t want to create a resistance to learning by forcing your child into the same types of activities they do during the year,” says Yeoman. “Instead, take the lessons they’ve learned in school and apply them to everyday situations. Whether it’s having your child map out the route to the grocery store or use basic geometry to create a sandcastle, you’re providing them the opportunity to apply their book knowledge in a new way.”
