As our hot Texas summers start to cool, many in our community take advantage of the lower temperatures by taking their exercise activities outdoors. This means more walkers and runners in your neighborhood, and along Stone Oak’s busy streets.

As you walk or run, please remember the safest path is on the sidewalk. If one is not available, please go against the traffic. That way you are certain to see all oncoming traffic.

In addition, bright, highly visible clothing, especially at dusk and evening hours, should always be worn. A flashlight at night can be a life-saver…and when wearing headphones, be sure you can still hear your surroundings.

North Central Baptist Hospital and the Baptist Breast

Center want the Stone Oak community to Think Pink during

October, breast cancer awareness month. Lace up your

sneakers and join us for the 3rd annual Paint the Parkway

Pink 5K run,1 mile family walk, kid’s fun run, and diaper

dash. The goal of Paint the Parkway Pink is to not only

raise funds for breast cancer research but also to promote

community wellness. The run/walk will take place at North

Central Baptist Hospital on Saturday, October 18, 2014.

Paint the “Parkway” Pink refers to Stone Oak Parkway, the

central thoroughfare for the Stone Oak community. The

race route actually runs parallel to Stone Oak Parkway

through the heart of the Stone Oak neighborhoods.

The money raised from this event is donated to Susan G. Komen for breast cancer research through a special, restricted grant

set up previously by the Women in Medicine and Law for the Cure®. Women in Medicine and Law for the Cure®, led by Dr.

Jean Holt and a group of female physicians and lawyers, partnered with the North Central Baptist Hospital and other groups,

vendors, and sponsors in the Stone Oak community, to hold the first race three years ago. It was a resounding success and

last year was even bigger and better. A Military and Wounded Warrior category was added, sponsored by Trinity Oaks. The

“Diaper Dash” sponsored by ABCD was created and gave babies the opportunity to crawl across the finish line with the help of

the Star’s Silver Fox mascot. Additional founding sponsors included the Baptist Breast Center, Sonterra Ophthalmology, Alamo

KidSports, Liz Braden Realtor and Character Café. North Central Baptist Hospital’s neighbor, Reagan High School, is also a

huge supporter of the race and is where the race Start and Finish line is located. We even had the honor of having the Reagan

High School principal, Mrs. Brenda Shelton, participate in the 5K last year. We are also tickled pink to have Itza Gutierrez,

former KENS 5 news anchor/reporter and current Spurs Arena Atmosphere reporter, as our event moderator each year.

New this year to Paint the Parkway Pink is a kid’s nutrition and fitness challenge, the Fit Playland Challenge sponsored by Alamo

Kids Sports, North Central Baptist Hospital, and Kidsville News. This free and fun 4 week challenge prepares children for the

Kid’s Fun Run at Paint the Parkway Pink. Upon completion

the kid’s receive a free race registration, Tshirt, medal, and

other special goodies.

Another very important part of the event that we wanted

to grow this year is the honor and recognition of our

community’s breast cancer survivors. Baptist Breast Center

is sponsoring a Survivor “Lounge” tent where survivors can

enjoy a continental breakfast, comfortable seating, and a

special gift. Additionally it is free for Survivors to register

for the race and includes a special survivor tshirt. The

completion of a 5K and even a 1 mile walk can be a major

feat for our survivors so we want to be there to support and

encourage them in their personal accomplishments.

We look forward to the Stone Oak community joining us for

fun and fitness with a purpose. We are very proud to share

that one hundred percent of every dollar raised, whether

from a runner, sponsor or vendor will go directly to research

to FIND A CURE!!!!

Halloween is a kid’s delight. It’s a blast to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties and, most of all, eat candy.

At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these tips (in anagram form) to make sure your little ghouls and goblins have a safe Halloween:

Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help see and help others see you.

Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it when done to avoid skin irritation.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Lower the risk for serious eye injury by avoiding decorative contact lenses.

Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.

Eat only factory-wrapped candy. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook.

Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult.

Never walk near lit candles or other open flames. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

If you’re hosting a party or expecting trick-or-treaters:Provide healthy treats, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. Offer fruits, vegetables and • cheeses to party guests.Use party games and trick-or-treating as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of • physical activity.Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause falls.• Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other open flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. • Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of reach of pets and small children and never leave them unattended.
