Planning to sell your home? Wonder how to help improve the curb appeal? One easy answer is to perform regular maintenance on the exterior of your house like you do with the interior. Take a walk around your property monthly specifically to look at your house with fresh eyes – look for anything that needs attention. Missing shutters, broken deck railings, etc. should be replaced immediately. Regular mowing and the weeding of the landscape beds are crucial to curb appeal.
In a continuing effort to help keep Stone Ridge a visually appealing and well-maintained community, routine exterior inspections are performed on all homes in Stone Ridge. These inspections are performed annually, typically section by section. As Stone Ridge continues to grow, each house is inspected every other year.
The annual lot inspection program is conducted by association staff and consists of a visual inspection of the exterior of each home in Stone Ridge. Staff checks to ensure routine exterior maintenance items are addressed in a timely manner and all changes, improvements, or enhancements have been approved by the Architectural Review Committee and are in compliance with the Governing Documents.
The following checklist will help owners prepare for upcoming lot inspections; however this list is not all inclusive. Use the checklist as a guide when you take your own monthly inspection walk.

GIRL SCOUTS SERVING THE COMMUNITY!
Many Girl Scouts in the Stone Ridge area spread holiday cheer as they participated in several activities that brought food to tables and warm clothes to Elementary age students in need. As well as serving the Stone Ridge Community, scouts also served throughout Loudoun County this past year. These events allowed scouts to grow in leadership while sharing their time and talents.

Last December, Troops 2652, 6707, 4884, 3959, 3097, 3169, 5947, 6517, 6029, 5810, 3169, and 4377, participated in Sing for Their Supper. Girl Scouts either went caroling throughout the neighborhood or sang in front of Giant Grocery. The community responded by donating enough food to fill several shopping carts. Gift cards were even added to the heap and all collected items were donated to the Dulles South Food Pantry (DSFP). Many of the supporters cheered the scouts on, which created even more holiday spirit.
Troop 6707 held a Toiletry Drive in the Kirkpatrick Farms neighborhood and at Giant to benefit the DSFP. Scouts collected bottles of shampoo and other toiletry items to be placed in festive bags for distribution.
Troop 4884 held a food drive for the DSFP at Giant and collected 402 pounds of food and $265 in gift cards in two hours! Troop 4884 also sang with Troop 3959 in support of Sing for Their Supper for Loudoun Interfaith Relief.
Troop 6029 volunteered at the Sing for Their Supper Food Stacking Party at Loudoun Interfaith. Over 2,000 pounds of food was collected to help families in Loudoun County.
20 Troops went shopping for 100 students in the South Riding and Stone Ridge communities benefited by the Dulles South Holiday Project.
Troop 2652 shopped at Target and stretched their budget to make sure that their sponsored children received the warm clothing they needed. Target donated over $200 in gift cards that went towards buying gifts. School liaisons were heard to say, “I was overcome with joy at the troop’s generosity!” and “Truly a blessing to have so many thoughtful and caring Girl Scout Troops and families. They have certainly brought many smiles and some happy tears to many children and families in need of some extra love and support this holiday season.”
Troop 6719 volunteered at the Mothernet Holiday Party. The scouts were able to share their holiday spirit and bring some joy to children as they offered comfort and fun for them. The scouts helped the children create crafts and play games. They practiced their communication skills (including Spanish) and leadership skills. The children were very appreciative and some even declared their “true love” for the scouts! The scouts really had to take initiative and engage with the children in order for the event to run smoothly.
Hundreds of Girl Scouts in the Stone Ridge and South Riding communities made the holidays that much brighter for many families in the area by either “Singing for Their Supper,” participating in the Dulles South Holiday Project or by joyfully spending time with children. Would you like to spread cheer to your community in 2015? Join the Girl Scouts by contacting [email protected].

ASTHMA: SIGNS, SYMPTOMS, AND WHEN TO GO TO THE ER
Did you know that asthma attacks are responsible for 2 million emergency room visits each year? And in the spring asthma sufferers must be especially diligent with more triggers prevalent during this time of year. By using your asthma medicines as directed by your doctor, and identifying your warning signs of a possible attack, you can help manage your asthma and prevent trips to the ER.
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting airways in the lungs that makes breathing difficult. Symptoms include:
- A persistent cough - Shortness of breath or wheezing - Tightness in the chest - Feeling tired or unable to do daily activities - A bluish color to the fingers or lips - Difficulty feeding in very young children
In the Washington metro area, about 8 percent of the population is affected by asthma. The best way to manage asthma is to have an asthma action plan. This is a form you fill out with your primary care provider or pulmonologist (lung specialist) that describes what medicines you need to take, and when, to keep you feeling well. You can see a sample plan at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s website, nhlbi.nih.gov, by searching “asthma action plan.”
An asthma attack happens when symptoms progress and breathing becomes more difficult. This occurs as a result of increasing inflammation and constriction of the airways of the lung. In most cases this is a gradual process that begins with milder symptoms that precede that actual asthma attack. Without proper treatment, they can progress.
It’s extremely important to learn about the disease, including being aware of your or your child’s specific triggers and warning signs. Some asthma attacks can be set off by exposure to air pollution; tobacco smoke; allergens like dust mites, pollen, mold or pet dander; or infections like colds and flu.
There are things you can do to reduce your chance of having an asthma attack. For example, if you know that dust is one of your triggers, you can wear a mask while vacuuming, or remove carpeting from your home. If tobacco smoke is one of your triggers, do not allow smoking in your home or in your car.
Warning signs of an asthma attack can include a cough or puffy eyes, or you may not be able to exercise as well. This is when you really want to intervene with quick-acting medications. Often, this is enough to prevent more serious attacks.
If you do use your medicines and the symptoms continue to get worse, or if you experience any of the following serious symptoms, go directly to your nearest emergency room:
- Rapid breathing - Difficulty speaking full sentences - Lips turning blue
Some people think that the medicines provided in the ER through a nebulizer are better than their inhalers. Actually, inhalers can be just as effective --- as long as you use them correctly. Ask your primary care provider or pulmonologist for directions, or visit the Centers for Disease Control’s website at cdc.gov and search “inhaler videos” to see a demonstration.

SAVE YOUR SPINE – STRETCH AT WORK
For many, a typical work day involves sitting in an office chair, working in front of the computer. This ultimately leads to bad posture and lower back pain due to tight hip flexors and shortened hamstrings. But there is hope. From selecting the right chair to stretching throughout the day, you can save your back and restore muscle flexibility.
QUICK TIPS WHILE SITTING
• Adjust your seat height to ensure your feet rest flat on the ground and your thighs are horizontal to the floor;
• The backrest should support the curve of your spine and provide good lumbar support. Ideally, the width of the backrest is 12 – 19 inches wide;
• Adjust the armrests of your chair allowing your arms to rest comfortably and your shoulders to be relaxed. The elbows and lower arms should rest lightly which means the armrests should neither be too high nor too low;
To further protect your back throughout the day, you must make time to stretch. Stretching increases blood flow which brings nourishment to your muscles. Stretching decreases muscle tension, anxiety, stress and fatigue. Stretching increases flexibility and joint range of motion.
SIMPLE OFFICE CHAIR STRETCHES
• Wrist stretches. Sit upright in your chair. Lift one arm and stretch it out in front of you with your palm facing upward. Gently grab your fingers with the opposite hand. Slowly pull the hand of your extended arm down. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 – 10 times. Switch hands.
• Shoulder stretches: Lift your right arm and reach behind your head. Place your hand on your upper back, making certain your arm is as close to your ear as possible. Use your left hand to gently hold your right elbow while pushing it towards the back of your head. Hold for 15 seconds. Switch arms. Repeat 3 – 5 times per arm.
• Spine twist: While sitting upright in your chair, place your left arm behind your left hip. Hold on to your chair with your right arm. Keep your
feet flat on the ground and slowly turn to your left. Hold for ten seconds. Switch sides. Repeat 5 times per side.
• Get out of your chair. Take time each hour to stand up and walk a few minutes.

Stone Ridge is a beautiful community with miles of walking trails where pet waste stations are provided so you may dispose of your pets waste properly. Please be courteous to your neighbors and remember to scoop the poop! No one likes to have to dodge droppings when they are out for a walk or to find unwanted pet waste in their yard. To assist with the clean-up of your pet, several stations stocked with plastic bags are provided throughout the community. You should also carry your own plastic bags as a backup when you walk your dog.
All residents or guests who walk their pets in the community are reminded all Loudoun County waste removal and leash laws must be followed. Owners/walkers must (1) keep pets on a leash in public and (2) immediately pick-up all droppings. Because these areas are heavily trafficked, please remember that pets are not permitted in or on the lawns, sidewalks, or parking areas surrounding the Association Office, Clubhouse buildings, or the amphitheater stage or seating area.
Thank you for picking up after your pets!

STOP THE FLYING TRASH!
Please remember to bag all of your trash when you put it out on trash collection day and to store your trash and recycling containers inside your garage or trash enclosure after pick-up. March is historically the windiest month of the year; however gusts of wind can occur at any time and cause un-bagged trash to blow away or take flight!
Please do your part to keep Stone Ridge free of debris and remember to bag all trash before placing it to the curb for collection. Trash and recycling containers should also be securely stored inside the garage or trash enclosure as strong winds can cause containers to tip over and blow away, which may cause damage to nearby cars or homes.
It may be wise to label your containers with your house number or some other identifying mark so there is no confusion between your and your neighbors over who an errand trash container belongs to! If you see your trash has blown away or a container has fallen into the street, please be a good neighbor and pick it up. Thank you!

ATTENTION TENANTS!
Did you know if you’re renting a property in Stone Ridge you’re entitled to the use of all community amenities? Tenants may gain access to the pools, fitness center, clubhouse, community website, and more by simply filling out and returning two documents; 1) the Community Membership Application and 2) the Memorandum of Lease Form (MoL).
To save yourself time and the aggravation of having to make additional trips to the Association Office, these forms may be completed ahead of time and are available for download on the community website (srnet.cc) or may be requested from the Association Office.
The MoL form is to be completed by the landlord and tenant(s) and states that the landlord has waived their rights to use the amenities and has passed that right to their tenant(s). A completed MoL, along with the Community Membership Application, is required for Membership ID’s cards to be issued. The Membership ID Cards are used for admittance to the pool and fitness facilities and are necessary for each member of your family age 6 and older.
In order to obtain Membership ID’s for you and your family to gain access to the pools and other amenities please remember the following important criteria:
1. The Association must have a current Memorandum of Lease (MoL) on file for you, stating a lease term of at least 12 months. This form is to be completed and signed by the landlord and tenant, must include the lease expiration date, and list all occupants of the residence.
2. Your landlord must check the box on the MoL which waives his/her rights to the community amenities, and turns those rights over to you, as the tenant.
3. If you previously submitted a MoL to our office, your lease was subsequently renewed but the Association was not notified, your Membership ID Cards have been probably been deactivated. To avoid being disappointed when you try to access the pools, please come by the Association office with your current lease and update your MoL before pool season begins.
4. You must have a valid Membership ID Card for each member of your family age 6 and older. You must present this ID card for admittance to the pools.
5. All residents of Stone Ridge, including tenants, will receive one complimentary Guest Pool Pass per household each year. This Guest Pool Pass is good for three pool visits and is available for pickup at the Association Office. Additional Guest Passes good for 5 visits may also be purchased at the Association Office for $15.

THE DULLES COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT wants to hear from you! The Dulles Community Outreach Project has been initiated by the County Board of Supervisors to identify neighborhood and community-wide priorities and develop strategies that will aid in future project planning activities.
Similar outreach efforts have been undertaken in other parts of the County over the past decade, and now it’s our turn to take a focused and comprehensive look at the needs of our community!
At the direction of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Planning and Zoning is conducting a survey of residents in the Dulles
Community. Stone Ridge and the Dulles South Alliance (DSA) are working to ensure residents and businesses are aware of and participating in the survey.
Please visit the Dulles Community Outreach Projects website and take a few moments to fill out the survey and share your vision, ideas, and concerns for the future of the Dulles South region. Your participation in the survey is essential to the success of this program.
In addition to the surveys, residents may also connect with the Project via various social media sites and web-based engagement forums to connect and interact with leaders in the Dulles Community, including Janet Clarke, Supervisor Blue Ridge District, Matt Letourneau, Supervisor Dulles District, Jeff Salmon, County Planning Commission Chairman, Dulles District, Captain Eric Prugh, LCSO Dulles South Station Commander, Val Walters, Executive Director DSA, and many more!
The Dulles Community Project is even making use of state-of-the-
art, interactive crowdsourced mapping technology to gather information and identify the assets and needs of the area. Users can highlight areas of Dulles they would like to accentuate and areas they believe should be remedied, using photos, map points, and short descriptions.
Use the following link to take the survey, contribute to the crowdsourced mapping project, view the existing conditions report, participate in discussions, and learn more about the project!
