The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education community, where innovation is often hands-on learning critical, finds itself at the

crossroads of traditional and virtual classes. Virtual classrooms are a creation of STEM innovation and there is a tremendous opportunity to utilize virtual

learning platforms to increase the interest and growth in STEM fields.

Increased access to STEM fields

A new report, by the Board of Governors, which oversees Florida's 12 public universities, shows that 65 percent of undergraduates who took only distance-learning courses during the 2016-2017 academic year were women, a historically underrepresented group in STEM fields.

Increased Interest in STEM Fields

STEM courses in a virtual classroom can target the growing number of students who are a part of distance learning programs.

Virtual Classes Provide Women & Under-Represented Groups Easier Access To STEM Programs

By connecting with female STEM professionals, young girls are able to see these professions as viable future career paths. This recognition is critical to cultivating young women's interest in STEM professions.

Girls can receive personal mentoring through a virtual learning environment from women in STEM fields, providing them with live interactions and increasing their interest in the STEM studies.

Students can connect with working STEM

professionals, providing them with first-hand

knowledge about their career path, work-life, and

job responsibilities.

Students can ask questions and get insights into the

professionals’ lives both inside and outside of

the workplace

Virtual afterschool programs allow students to pursue their

interests outside of regular school atmosphere hours; allowing the students to

tinker, design and create with digital devices

Students are able to view a host of videos that show

how STEM skills can be applied to real world

situations

Virtual learning environments allow student

to work or intern while they're in school, helping

them earn real-world experience in STEM fields

Virtual classes allow student to engage with interactive 3D models

which promotes personalized learning
