Session Pre-Requisites In order to fully maximize the benefits of this workshop, participants are expected to have the following pre-requisite knowledge and skills:

• Basic computing skills • Familiarity with Powerpoint XP, 2003, or its equivalent

About the Workshop Have you ever found yourself standing in front of your class and wondering what in the world is going on in the minds of your students? Many times, when we ask our students if they have questions on the lecture, they will not give you any response or the ones who are staring at the screen look down when they notice you are looking at their direction. Student motivation and engagement are an ongoing challenge for classroom instructors. A substantial body of literature indicates that the use of non-traditional interventions, such as games, simulations, multimedia instruction and interactive activities are valuable teaching methods. These tools encourage active learning, collaboration and interactivity (Reuben, 1999). Participation in an activity requires the use of content by the learner; thus ensuring students are working with the ideas that are being taught, and applying them.

This workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience on the creation of different interactive games using PowerPoint. The session will also introduce the use of clickers where students can electronically submit their answer to a question posed to the class. Students register their answer by pressing the appropriate button, and the computer records their response. A report is generated showing histogram of responses which instructors can show to the whole class, or save it as an Excel file for grading purposes.

Workshop Objectives By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

• Relate significance of research findings on the use of games to student learning • Identify games that may be useful for learning • Create simple interactive games in PowerPoint

Current Research

Reuben, 1999 Speck 1996

Using activities and games in class encourages active learning, as well as collaboration, and interactivity

Schwartzman, 1997 Millis & Cottell, 1998 Franklin, Peat, & Lewis, 2003

Games provide structure for interactions, reward students for collaborating and problem solving, and promote cooperative learning, individual accountability, positive interdependence, and the need for group processing and feedback It also provides a way to reach and engage students who may have a variety of learning styles.

Cruickshank & Telfer, 2001 Games promote transfer because they require student participation and active involvement with the material within a rich context. Creating opportunities for students to practice applying the material, such as in a game or simulation, can bridge the distance between learning concepts presented in a classroom and using that information to solve a problem met outside of the school.

Ang and Rao 2003

While players can learn by trial and error, as well as stimulus association, which is behavioral but once a player has understood the basic rules and concepts of game, he/she will think cognitively how they should respond in a new situation, thus actively updating existing knowledge to fit what is newly confronted in the game environment.

Gagne et al, 1992 Gagne-Brigg’s theory of Instruction Design proposes that learning occurs when the learner acquires the capability to do something. It classifies learned capabilities in five categories: (1) verbal information (2) intellectual skills (3) cognitive strategy (4) attitudes (5) motor skills

Factors to Consider when Preparing a Game 1. What is your purpose? 2. What level of learning do you hope to achieve? 3. What game format will you use? What are the possible advantages/disadvantages? 4. What are the available resources? 5. How will you determine the appropriate subject matter? 6. How will you prepare the participants? 7. What materials are needed? 8. How will you assess it?

Demonstration 1: Q&A Games Q&A game is a popular activity used to conduct academic reviews. It offers an opportunity for students to enjoy themselves while reviewing for an exam. According to research, engaging a class in enjoyable learning can improve the atmosphere of the class, reduce students' stress during review, and allow students to cooperate and relate with each other. Various game shows can be applied in playing this game. Some of these include Jeopardy, Who wants to be a Millionaire?, Bingo, 1 vs. 100, Who Am I?,etc.

Jeopardy Jeopardy is an interactive game which can be played by individual or teams. It has a unique answer and question format which students must phrase their responses in the form of a question. The complexity of each question increases as the points or dollar value increases. If a student team answers incorrectly, incompletely, or exceeds the time limit to answer, other teams may answer the question. The level of friendly competition combined with the rapid pace of the game encourages students to learn better.

This type of game is recommended for recalling of concepts, comprehension, application and analysis. However, if you are targeting higher order thinking skills, it is recommended to provide scenarios, case studies, or problem sets where students can practice critical thinking.

Designing the Game Board

1. Open jeopardy_template.ppt file from the desktop. 2. The file contains four slides (title, rules, game board, and question slide).

3. Go to the third slide- Game Board. 4. Think of three categories related to the subject you are teaching. Name each of the categories with

Demonstration 2: Classroom Response System

The Classroom Response System is a new tool faculty can use to engage students in the classroom. Each student is given a CRS pad or better known as "clicker" device in order to respond to questions asked either verbally or on screen. The receiver connects directly to the faculty computer's USB port. When students submit their responses, the system generates a report in a form of a graphical chart and can be saved as an Excel file for grading purposes.

This is best used when you want to get immediate response from your students. Instructors can easily find out if everyone understood the lesson or if there are misconceptions that need to be clarified.

Examples of game with CRS application include Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and 1 vs. 100. These games can be played by individual or team. All students can participate even they take the role of the player or the audience. Please refer to the following sites to learn more about these games:
