Montgomery Once again it is the season when we focus on STEWARDSHIP, a word for many, mean- ing "to give money." Dare say, few of us think much about it during the other eleven months of the year; yet, each Sunday in the church bulletin is the printed statement, "WE WILL BE LOYAL TO THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH THROUGH FAITHFUL PARTICIPATION IN THE MINISTRIES OF THE CONGREGATION BY OUR PRAYERS, PRESENCE, GIFTS, SERVICE AND WITNESS." That is a bold statement!!! When each of us joined Central we made that commitment. Fifty-three years ago, I moved to Spartanburg and chose to become a member at Central, a wise, unregrettable decision! Central was and IS a core part of my life, providing spiritual growth, education, and fellowship for the en- hancement of community service and out- reach. The teachings of the Christian faith and the foundation of their spiritual life were given to my children by the saints at Central, illuminating their parental instruction. The rites of baptism, marriage and funerals for my loved ones were performed in the sanctuary where we worship and praise God, with the un- excelled music lifting our spirits each Sunday. Central UMC remains a bul- wark of strength and a giver of “immortal gladness.” While experiencing many changes, our faith is unwaver- ing, our vision focused, and our talents are diverse and numerous. We have a message to witness, programs to develop and expand, suffering to alleviate, and love to be shared. Let us fortify our efforts by "counting our blessings” and affirming the pledge we made. In this era of accountability, I challenge each of you to seriously reflect on the five areas of participation in the loyalty pledge (prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness) and rate yourself on each … are you giving your best? Stewardship Thought

Joyful Is the Cheerful Giver!

by Jennie S. Montgomery

Once again it is the season when we focus on STEWARDSHIP, a word for many, mean-ing "to give money." Dare say, few of us think much about it during the other eleven months of the year; yet, each Sunday in the church bulletin is the printed statement, "WE WILL BE LOYAL TO THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH THROUGH FAITHFUL PARTICIPATION IN THE MINISTRIES OF THE CONGREGATION BY OUR PRAYERS, PRESENCE, GIFTS, SERVICE AND WITNESS." That is a bold statement!!! When each of us joined Central we made that commitment. Fifty-three years ago, I moved to Spartanburg and chose to become a member at Central, a wise, unregrettable decision! Central was and IS a core part of my life, providing spiritual growth, education, and fellowship for the en-hancement of community service and out-reach. The teachings of the Christian faith and the foundation of their spiritual life were given to my children by the saints at Central, illuminating their parental instruction. The

rites of baptism, marriage and funerals for my loved ones were performed in the sanctuary where we worship and praise God, with the un-excelled music lifting our spirits each Sunday.

Central UMC remains a bul-wark of strength and a giver of “immortal gladness.” While experiencing many changes, our faith is unwaver-ing, our vision focused, and our talents are diverse and numerous. We have a message to witness, programs to develop and expand, suffering to alleviate, and love to be shared. Let us fortify our efforts by "counting our blessings” and affirming the pledge we made.

In this era of accountability, I challenge each of you to seriously reflect on the five areas of participation in the loyalty pledge (prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness) and rate yourself on each … are you giving your best?

a service devoted to El Dia de los Muertos

Last year, we learned that El Dia de los Muer-tos is not Mexican Halloween! It is not scary! Despite the skeletons and skulls, it is not spooky!

Instead, it is a multi-day holiday, following a strong tradition of native and indigenous people to remember and celebrate loved ones who have died. We might see it as similar to either All Souls’ Day or All Saints’ Day.

During El Dia de los Muertos, streets are filled with flowers, colorful decorations, and parades. Everywhere are the familiar symbols of calacas

This year, we will again cele-brate El Dia de los Muertos. And, in a similar way, we will invite everyone to bring a photo of a loved one who has died, to dis-play, as we create our own S.T.A.R. Family Altar. However we choose to recognize this time, it should be considered reflective and not sad. After the service, plan on ‘hanging

around’ to share a tasty tamale and a special treat or two!

and calaveras– skeletons and skulls – shaped as candied sweets, masks, and almost always portrayed as enjoying life in fancy clothes and entertaining situa-tions. Families celebrate by creating altars and placing offerings of food (favorites of those who have died), pan de muertos – bread baked in shapes of skulls—and figures, candles, incense, yellow mari-golds, and, most importantly, photos of the departed souls. This is a time of gatherings, praying, remembering those who have died, and supporting one another in their own spiritual journeys.

SPIHN (Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network) returns to Central November 17-24.

Thank you for supporting this valued mission. If you would be interested in volunteering your time, please contact Jim Spencer (570-7872) or Carol Reeves (574-0659) for more information.
