STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 140 YEARS OF INNOVATION

Since its founding in 1870 as the nation’s first college of mechanical engineering, Stevens Institute of Technology has simultaneously defined and expanded the frontiers of American technological innovation. From designing and constructing the steel structures for the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, to the co-founding of General Motors and Texas

Instruments, the Stevens legacy includes Nobel Prize winners, leaders of multi-national corporations, pioneering researchers, and renowned entrepreneurs. Over the past 140 years, Stevens faculty, graduates, students, scholars, scientists, and business leaders have developed and deployed transformative solutions to some of the most critical and complex needs in government, industry, science, and education.

A Stevens education is unlike any other. As one of the nation’s leading research universities, Stevens is known for its unique pedagogical model, its distinctive and highly productive research programs, its world-class facilities, and its well-established partnerships in business, industry, and government. One of the central tenets of the Stevens mission is that solutions to many of the critical problems that face humanity can be found in the improved use and understanding of technology. Stevens was founded on the principle that its duty is to motivate and prepare engineers, scientists, and business leaders to find these solutions. The university’s commitment to harnessing the power of applied innovation to empower the best minds to seek and find demonstrable improvements to real-world challenges continues to this day.

THE STEVENS RESEARCH CULTURE INNOVATION IS IN OUR DNA

From the industrial revolution to the information age, Stevens has been a research pioneer in engineering, the sciences, and technology. This quest for new and essential knowledge has created a culture of academic and scientific excellence, entrepreneurial creativity, and commercial viability that is also a core component of the Stevens educational model. Regardless of field or specialty, instruction and research at Stevens takes place in a cross-disciplinary setting, where students learn to transform new ideas and research into viable business opportunities by developing business plans and evolving intellectual properties into market-relevant projects.

TECHNOGENESISTechnogenesis is the philosophy and pedagogical structure at the center of the educational and research experience of every Stevens student. Inspired by the fundamental institutional belief that the value of any innovation is truly measured in its real-market application, Technogenesis fosters collaborative invention, development, and deployment among students, faculty, entrepreneurs, investors, private industry, and government.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PHILOSOPHYAt Stevens, every department, school, facility, student, and faculty member is a part of an interconnected, cross-functional, and readily leveraged resource pool. Collaboration and multi-disciplinary synthesis are standard elements of the innovation process at Stevens, and students are challenged to think well beyond their specializations to find new ways of asking and answering questions.

ACADEMIC ENTREPRENEURSHIPEntrepreneurship is evident at every stage of research practice at Stevens. The university has redefined the traditional university-to-industry technology transfer process by taking greater control of the knowledge development and market realization phases. Intellectual property and solutions commercialization at Stevens is managed through the Office of Academic Entrepreneurship (OAE), which is dedicated to realizing and supporting research outcomes in the marketplace. OAE provides extensive guidance, sponsors incentives, and offers assistance to students and faculty alike in the development, protection, and deployment of ideas and inventions. An innovation in itself, OAE motivates ingenuity in research and promotes initiatives for change in education, infrastructure, and administration.

THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISEThe Research Enterprise at Stevens Institute of Technology is a unique support system for university-wide research initiatives. It assists researchers in connecting to critical national and global problem sets and in forming interdisciplinary teams. The Research Enterprise comprises academic research, national research centers, and cross-functional research missions, along with the organizations and infrastructure that support these efforts.
