Personal Statement

A highly motivated, conscientious and professional individual, I have gained a diverse portfolio of abilities over the course of my working life. After acquiring significant experience within the logistics industry, 2005 saw my need for further personal improvement intensify, resulting in a complete shift in my career path.

Initially re-applying my skills base to the Document Control function on rail infrastructure projects, I soon progressed to become the functional lead and have held several posts in this capacity.

More recently I have become involved in several Programme and Project Governance activities. In this field my key achievement to date has been to establish, implement and coordinate a process managing bi-monthly Project Stage Gate peer reviews to supplement the Programme Gates and to automate much of the process by writing several custom VBA scripts and macros.

I also have a good working knowledge of other key software packages currently in use in modern industry.

Employment History

Checkpoint/Stage Gate CoordinatorNovember 2014 – PresentInfrastructure Delivery - London Underground/TfL - Canary Wharf, LondonCurrently, I am involved in Programme and Project governance activities on the Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) portfolio of infrastructure works for London Underground's Sub-Surface Upgrade Programme, (SUP), supporting the projects' Sponsor Stage Gate preparations and managing a comparable process at project level.

Having established, developed and implemented a robust and auditable process, I currently coordinate the bi-monthly Project Stage Gate peer review meetings. These allow projects to demonstrate delivery stage readiness and give improved confidence to the Programme level Sponsor Gate reviews. They are also used to evidence other aspects of assurance approval.

A challenging role, this has allowed me to make a good use of, and expand on, my wide and varied skills set and experience. Consistency and further efficiencies have been realised in this process as I have significantly developed my VBA and macro scripting skills. This has resulted in the automation of several tasks including report creation & distribution, agenda & minutes generation plus a self updating dashboard report. This live report takes data directly from the tracker and provides a live graphical status representation of all submissions to date.

Documentation & Systems ManagerJune 2014 – October 2014 (5 months)REAL Alliance - YorkThe REAL Alliance was, at this time, a fledgling 6 partner, multi-disciplinary infrastructure renewals programme, covering the preliminary works being undertaken in Northern Hub. This principally covers the East Coast Main Line Power Supply Upgrade and Trans-Pennine Express projects.

My part in its formative months was to establish a common data environment for the all partners involved in the project to use in its interim works, prior to full mobilisation and the deployment of a longer term solution.

Document Control Manager/Programme Controls Support ManagerNovember 2012 – June 2014GN/GE Alliance - PeterboroughThe GNGE Alliance Partnership comprised of Network Rail, Invensys, Babcock International and Carillion Plc. who undertook a major programme of works to increase freight capacity on an 86 mile rural route section between Peterborough and Doncaster. Now completed, the GNGE route section benefits from enhanced passenger services and a designed increase in the levels of freight that travel the route. This alleviates freight traffic on the ECML facilitating a future increase in ECML passenger services.

Taking the collaborative model one step further, the ethos of the Alliance was to deliver the works as a fully integrated team, each with an equal share of risk and opportunities and benefits. I also had a pivotal role in managing the Programme's journey for BS11000 certification and we were successful in gaining this accreditation.

Having identified critical shortfalls in the inherent EDMS, I initiated and implemented the deployment of ASITE across the Programme and went on to develop the requisite Document Management Protocols required to support the Programme.

Programme Document Control Interface Manager April 2009 – November 2012S Stock Infrastructure Renewal Programme - London Underground/TfL - Victoria, LondonThis programme was also a major infrastructure renewal and has many similarities to the Thameslink Programme that I was involved with previously (see next section) and had the added constraint of working within the confines of the tunnels. The duties were essentially as listed under my Thameslink role, save for the EDMS which was LiveLink in this case rather that MOSS. The transposition of duties was, in the main, reasonably seamless. These works took place on the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle and District lines and constituted circa £4.5 billion of the overall Tube Upgrade costs. It involved modernising/renewing the track infrastructure and signalling to accommodate a new fleet of longer, air conditioned, walk-through rolling stock and allowing great frequency from an operational perspective.

I tried to steer the organisation away from the view that Document Control is a mere library/recall function and with the methodologies and practices that I developed and deployed, my team provided a demonstrable level of engineering support, look ahead, exception and scheduling reports and various gap analyses. All of these measures were geared at supporting the overall Programme Delivery Schedule and its sub-projects as well as their respective milestones.

Document Control Service To A Major Multi-Discipline Rail Infrastructure Project

The role was based at Network Rail’s James Forbes House in the Southwark area of London and I was the team leader of 9 Document Controllers. Collectively, we provided Document Control and Project Engineering Support services to the entire Railway Systems Division of the Thameslink Program which is disseminated into 8 distinct project disciplines – namely Track, Electrification & Plant, Signalling, Telecoms, Reliability Strengthening, Inner Area Tunnels, Outer Areas & Rolling Stock.

The aim of the program was to completely re-develop the entire rail network along the whole Thameslink route from Bedford, through London and down into Brighton, providing a more efficient service with 12 car trains and a greater frequency of trains per hour. This involved a massive investment of some £5.5 billion and a major upgrade to some of London’s busiest stations. Along with the improvement works, there is the added challenge of TLP having little or no impact on the operational railway, and as such ensure a seamless integration between the new and existing infrastructure.

My initial remit was to identify areas of procedural & resource shortfall, strategize and establish a streamlined approach to the project’s Document Control requirements and subsequently implement the solutions. I sourced and built a strong and capable team of discipline specific document controllers and equipped them with the tools required to successfully administer the needs of an extremely high profile and visible rail infrastructure investment project.

I took my motorcycle test a few years ago and enjoy taking the bike out on the weekends around the twisty country roads of Yorkshire. Self taught, I have recently completed a full strip down and rebuild of a 2001 Honda Fireblade, making several custom modifications from the original. I also enjoy watching football and follow the antics of Hull City, on and off the field.
