Proceeds from Stepping Out for College of the Desert allow the Foundation to help meet the College's most pressing and immediate needs, such as:In 2017, the College launched the PLEDGE program, guaranteeing one year of free “tuition” to all incoming freshman students graduating from local high schools who enrolled full-time. The program removes the economic barriers to the first year of college while providing critical guidance, skills and support that are essential to achievement of individual educational and career goals. Community support helps secure future PLEDGE years, as well as help with other costs that are a significant challenge for students, including books, transportation and childcare. Nearly 95 percent of COD incoming students need remedial classes in math, English or writing before they can enroll in college credit classes. Since 2012, more than 1,500 students at College of the Desert have taken advantage of the EDGE “Engage Develop Grow and be Empowered” program. Three weeks of intensive, affordable sessions focused on qualifying for college entry saves hundreds of students both time and money each year and accelerates their entry and advancement toward academic and career goals. Thanks to community and grant support, the EDGE program has grown steadily but remains underfunded. The COD Career and Workforce Solutions Center was created in response to the growing demand for skilled workers in the Coachella Valley – and the frustration on the part of employers who have been unable to tap into the College's rich source of job-ready students. Now students can find the tools and support they need to connect to jobs, and businesses can work with the College to develop opportunities for students eager to gain relevant work experience.

Lucie Arnaz has created her own fiery, explosive, and heartfelt musical tribute to the rhythm of her roots and the man who introduced the conga to the United States, and Lucille Ball to Television: her father, Desi Arnaz.

LATIN ROOTS is an eclectic Latin - American mix in English and Spanish highlighting songs from Irving Berlin and The Gershwins alongside tunes by Agustín Lara, Rafael Hernandez, Margarita Lecuona, and Desi Arnaz.

Critics raved: “Latin Roots sizzles with sophistication and sassy spice.” This show is the very subtle throb of the Latin rhythm itself.

Tickets go on sale November 3. Call 760-340-2787 or visit mccallumtheatre.com.

Pre-event reception for sponsorship levels $5,000 and above.

STEPPING OUT FOR COLLEGE OF THE DESERT

ABOUT CODFor 60 years, students have turned to College of the Desert to pursue their hopes and dreams of a better life. For all those years, our amazing faculty and staff have provided the academic preparation and support needed to help them meet their goals. In 2017, for the third consecutive year, the College graduated its largest class in its history. Those students, our alumni, go on to jobs and successful careers, lives of community service, business success and civic leadership.

The success of our community and its College are forever linked. Without you, thousands of College of the Desert students will not have the opportunity to pursue their hopes and dreams of a better life.

College of the Desert provides access to higher education, training, and career advancement opportunities to more than 15,000 students in the Coachella Valley annually. In 2016-17, over $900,000 was contributed to program support and more than 500 students received $680,000 for books, tuition, supplies, and other expenses. Through these gifts, donors are helping students pursue their dreams of a college education.

To provide for the community's needs, COD strives to bring the best education and workforce training to the region. Today, COD offers 60 Associate Degree Programs and 63 Certificate Programs in a wide variety of disciplines.
