Flu is a common infectious viral illnessspread by coughs and sneezes, writesShabbir Damani of Halls The Chemist. Itcan be very unpleasant, but you'll usuallybegin to feel better within about a week.

You can catch flu – short for influenza – allyear round, but it's especially common inwinter, which is why it's also known as‘seasonal flu’.

It's not the same as the common cold. Fluis caused by a different group of viruses andthe symptoms tend to start more suddenly,be more severe and last longer.

Some of the main symptoms of flu include:

● a high temperature (fever)of 38oC (100.4oF) or above

● tiredness and weakness

● a headache

● general aches and pains

● a dry, chesty cough

Cold-like symptoms – such as a blocked orrunny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat –can also be caused by flu, but they tend tobe less severe than the other symptoms youhave.

Flu can make you feel so exhausted andunwell that you have to stay in bed and restuntil you feel better.

Halls The Chemist will be running bothprivate and NHS flu vaccination services. As the vaccine can take a couple of weeksto be effective, early vaccination is critical,so don't wait any longer! Althoughappointments aren't always necessary, youcan reserve your flu jab by contacting Hallson 01733 229090, or in person next timeyou’re shopping in Nisa.

For those eligible for the free NHS fluvaccination, please see Halls’ advert fordetails; for everyone else the private fluvaccine will be £6.99. If you have anyquestions, Halls’ pharmacists will bepleased to help.

As you will see elsewhere in this issue, YGPand the Wellside Surgery are also offeringNHS flu jab programmes, so there are plentyof opportunities to get protected whereveris most convenient for you.

Thanks, as ever, to everyone who hascontacted me about issues in the village, writes Councillor Tim Alban. Along withthose I have identified myself, they currentlyfall into three main categories:Environmental (including dog fouling, weeds, potholes and litter), Street Signs, andPolice Matters.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

I have continued to work with the DistrictCouncil to tackle the problem of weeds, dogfouling and litter in Stilton.

Following a site meeting I had with theirArea Manager, the Council carried out adeep clean of the alleyway between ManorRoad and North Street, which tackled dogexcrement, weeds, litter and other items. The team also removed weeds in Gala Close.

The weeds on the paths and the road edgesin the village have been sprayed at leastonce during the summer but they continueto prove resilient. A few residents haveexpressed their concern about the use ofweed killer and I have raised this with theDistrict Council.

The District Council also responded to myrequest to clear litter from the verges on theroad between the edge of the village andCaldecote hill (an area where a local residentclears litter on a voluntary basis).

I keep pressing the County Council to tacklethe potholes in and around Stilton. Some ofthem have been worked on and some havebeen sprayed with white marker paint

(including the big dip near the manholecover in Manor Road), which should meanthat they will be attended to. The potholenear the bus stop in North Street has beenpartly filled but I don't think it has been donewell enough and I've told the CountyCouncil so.

Unfortunately, some of the potholes don'tmeet the council's intervention level andwon't be filled.

STREET SIGNS

The District Council responded to myrequest to replace the damaged ChurchClose street sign near the junction withChurch Street and the County Councilfollowed up my report of the missing signpointing to Folksworth at the top ofCaldecote hill. (When they replaced it, itbecame apparent that the sign pointing toCaldecote is mis-spelt as Caldicote! Thismay be replaced at some point but almostcertainly not this year).

POLICE MATTERS

I continue to be a part of the Stilton SpeedWatch team and know that this is making adifference in tackling speeding in ourvillage. New members are always welcomeand I will be pleased to put anyone whowants to find out more in contact with thelocal coordinator.

Dangerous and illegal parking, especiallynear the centre of the village by the shopsbut also at other points where vehicles blockfootpaths, continue to be a concern forresidents so I arranged a site meeting with

Keeping Up With the DronesesIS YOUR NEW TOY BREAKING THE LAW?

Every new technology brings new problemsas well as capabilities and the rapiddevelopment of clever and affordable dronesis a good example. As many youngsters (inparticular) may be eyeing up the latest dronefor Christmas, and because we’ve alreadyreceived complaints from residents, it’s agood time to point out what you can - orrather cannot - do with them.

AIR LAW

First up, a drone is an Unmanned AerialVehicle (UAV) and, like everything elsethat takes to the air, is subject to the AirNavigation Order. This makes it an offenceto operate a UAV in a dangerous manner. In particular, drones fitted with cameras(most of them these days) must not be flown:

● within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings or structures

● over congested areas or large gatheringssuch as concerts or sports events (likeCheese-Rolling!)

The Civil Aviation Authority takes a dimview of irresponsible drone operators andhas successfully prosecuted several already. So the first thing you should do after you’veopened the box is to check out how the ANOapplies by reading the The Dronecode atwww.caa.co.uk/Consumers/Model-aircraft-and-drones/The-Dronecode/.

Some GPS-equipped drones can even beprogrammed to automatically fly predefinedroutes; a cool feature but one which caneasily put you on the wrong side of the law.

In any event, there are plenty of hazards inbuilt-up areas, such as overhead wires, trees,TV aerials etc. Damage property - whetherprivate or public - and you are personallyliable. And drones are not fail-safe either;even a small one can cause serious injury ifit drops on someone.

PRIVACY

The second issue concerns people’s right toprivacy and one’s legal obligation to act ina considerate manner to others.

Flying your drone around the neighbour-hood and filming people in their homes orgardens may sound like fun, but it canconstitute Harassment, or even IntrusiveSurveillance. So don’t be surprised if youfind the boys in blue knocking at your door. And if you’re daft enough to go posting theresulting videos on YouTube, don’t expectany sympathy from the courts. Even if thepolice don’t regard a particular incident asa criminal matter, you may still find theoffended person bringing an expensive civilaction against you.

The collection of images of identifiableindividuals, even inadvertently, when usingdrone-mounted surveillance cameras willalso be subject to the Data Protection Act.The whole privacy issue is a legal minefieldthat you really don’t want to get drawn into,so if you want to go making aerial videos,do it somewhere safe and where you won’tupset anybody.

Fly safely, sensibly and have fun!

We are excited to launch our first

at Stilton Primary School! When: Monday 31st October, 6pm - 7:30pmWhere: Stilton Primary School HallWhat: A Party of Light - arts & crafts, fun activities, games and celebration based around the theme of light. And followed by - light refreshments!Who: All are welcome (children must be accompanied by a responsible adult)

Entrance free, but donations welcome Hope you can make it!

For those who are not familiar with theMessy Church concept, here's a briefexplanation.

Messy Church is an alternative form ofchurch which aims to be more accessible tothose less familiar with traditional forms ofchurch. Sometimes the timing of churchservices make it difficult for people withlots of other weekend commitments toattend. Often it is the fear of keeping atoddler (or teenager) occupied during a longsermon that keeps families away; sometimesit is wariness of the unknown that makes ittoo daunting to take the first steps throughthe church door.

MESSY CHURCH IS FUN!

It mixes creative crafts, fun games, activities, music and celebration around abiblical theme. By exploring a themethrough these different media it helps peopleof all ages to take away some meaning fromthe session. Everyone will have somethingto contribute and something to take away.

Spending time at Messy Church as a familyand with friends should help us grow andappreciate the benefit of gathering withothers and to know the love that God hasfor us all.

Folklore News & Info for Folksworth,Morborne & Washingley Folk

Meet The New NeighboursAN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE NEW OWNERS OF THE FOX

Folklore editor Sarah Abbott, and SarahWilkinson (founder of the FolksworthVillage Pub Society) spoke to restaurateurand soon-to-be pub landlady PrafullaGorania and her two Head Chefs, SamBateman and Kenny Bradford, about theirplans for the Fox. Prafulla currently runsthe Peterborough fine dining restaurantClarkes.

THE BEST-LAID PLANS…

Needless to say, the project is bringingunexpected surprises. Prafulla told us thatthe planning application to HuntingdonshireDistrict Council had been mistakenly put asa change of use from pub to restaurant, whenit fact it will be both a pub and a restaurant.‘We hadn't seen the plans the architect putin; I was shocked when I saw that!’ she said.‘It’s now been changed to “public house andrestaurant” and we're just waiting for thecouncil to update that.’

ROOM FOR EVERYBODY

Prafulla talked us through the proposed floorplans. ‘We've got an area where anybodycan come in, sit down and have a drink,’she explained. ‘We've made it a roomespecially for the village. We also have abar menu especially for the bar area too, which will be different from the restaurantmenu.’

Looking at the plans, the village bar areawill be in the centre as you first come in,but stretching further back than the originalroom there used to. On the left-hand sidethere will be a 'chef's room', where peoplecan have a private dining experience, and alounge with sofas. At the back will be a newsun room with folding doors, overlookingthe views across the fields at the back. Thisroom could be used for either restaurant orpub use depending on demand.

The larger right-hand side will be therestaurant, but some evenings the largerroom might be used for the pub and thediners could be in the sun room. It alldepends what's happening any particularevening.

LIVING ON THE JOB

The car park will stay at the front. Theupstairs is set to be converted to threeself-contained studio flats. ‘They will beused for staffing,’ explained Prafulla, ‘sosomeone will be on site 24 hours.’ However,in future if everything goes to plan theremight be bed & breakfast rooms too.

GREAT CAPABILITIES

When asked about the large field area at theback that is part of the site, the answer was‘We've got no idea what we're going to dowith that bit yet because it's just so big. Infact, we haven't even seen that bit yet, it's

so long!’ So we'll have to wait and see onthat aspect. However, there will definitelybe an outside seating/garden area at the backof the pub. ‘That area, we're going to makeinto a lovely garden,’ said Prafulla. (Thesite plans can be viewed on the DistrictCouncil's online planning portal.)

But Prafulla was giving nothing away aboutthe name of the new pub/restaurant. ‘It's asurprise - you'll be pleasantly surprised!’she said. There will also be new localemployment opportunities. ‘We would likelocal people to come in and apply for jobs,’she went on. ‘We are looking for waitingand bar staff.’ Anyone interested shouldapply to Priya at Clarkes by [email protected] or bycalling 01733 892681.

THE MICHELIN TOUCH

Regarding the food menu, Prafullaexplained: ‘It's going to be a little bit morerelaxed than Clarkes, but the standards willstill be very high.’ Head chef Sam woulddescribe the food style as ‘upmarketgastro-pub with a hint of fine dining’. HeadChef Kenny added: ‘There will be elementsI've learned here and elements I've learnedin Michelin-starred restaurants. As well ashaving friendly food, there'll be a bit of atwist to make it exciting, but also goodwholesome food, to keep that happymedium.’

Children will be welcome too. ‘We'll begiving kids their own menu.’

THE BEST CHEFS IN TOWN

And good news for local farmers too: ‘Wewant it to be really local, seasonal; we reallywant to use as many local suppliers as

possible. And we've got the best chefs inPeterborough,’ Prafulla assured us. But wedidn't have to take her word for it. Pastrychef Chloe made two amazing desserts forus whilst we were there - delicious!

RESTORATION DRAMA

The builders, meanwhile, have a lot of workto do. ‘It wasn't safe at all,’ explainedPrafulla. ‘The roof was open, water wascoming down, it was really bad. People hadvandalised everything. They’d smashed thesinks, ripped the electrics out of the walls;everything.’ A huge job of restoration, interior design and decoration will soon beunderway. The old fireplaces will be broughtback into use. And some of the history ofthe pub will remain: ‘We found two thingsthat we're going to retain - that will beanother surprise!’

GET READY!

The new pub and restaurant at the Fox(Manor Road, Folksworth) will be openaround the end of October. They plan toopen seven days a week, lunchtimes andevenings. We can hardly wait!

Make a Clean SweepGET THOSE CHIMNEYS SWEPT NOW!

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service isencouraging all residents with solid-fuelfires or stoves to get their chimneysprofessionally swept before the winter setsin. Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely:

● Sweep your chimney at least once a yearand get brickwork inspected, especiallythe chimney breast and roof space.

● Don’t bank fires too high or overload thegrate. Let them burn down well and checkthe hearth before going to bed.

● Use a fire- or spark guard to preventaccidental fires.

● Don’t place objects on or over themantlepiece; it may cause you to standtoo close to the fire to reach or use them.

● Burn only suitable fuels and avoidburning resinous woods as their sootbuilds up quickly.

Halloween SpecialPUMPKIN SOUP - WHY NOT?

With Halloween upon us, the shops will bepiled high with pumpkins. But when you’vehollowed one out to make a suitably scaryhead, what do you do with the flesh? Simple:use it to make a tasty, creamy soup; justperfect for an autumn evening.

PUMPKIN SOUP

This is best processed in batches to avoidsplashes.

Cook two onions in 4oz of melted butter ona low heat for 10 minutes, then add the fleshof one pumpkin, one cinnamon stick, freshnutmeg, salt and pepper. Cover and allowto simmer for about 40 minutes, stirringregularly.

When the pumpkin is soft, add three pintsof stock (chicken or vegetable). Bring to theboil and simmer for another 30 minutes.

Just before serving, stir in a glass of sherry, swirl soured cream on top and sprinkle withparsley or chives.

Tip: If you find you have a taste for this, theshops often have loads of unsold pumpkinsleft over after Halloween, reduced to clear!

Been inhot water again, eh?

Don’t laugh; it’syour turn next!

From The Cabbage Patch

Get the Dibber OutPLANT BULBS NOW FOR A GREAT SPRING SHOW

Now's the time to plant bulbs to ensure agood show next spring. Planting early, whilethe soil is warm, gives the plants time toestablish, although tulips can be planted upto late November. The general rule is toplant two and a half times the bulb's depth, tip upwards. Snowdrops are alwayswelcome and will spread and multiply eachyear. They look better in 'drifts' so to get anatural look throw a handful (10-ish) ofbulbs in the air and plant where they land.

Some bulbs such as hyacinths look best incontainer; plant them in general-purposecompost or in a special bulb compost. Don'tforget to water. The danger is, of course, attack from squirrels and mice, so cover thetop with a piece of chicken wire.

Garlic is also a bulb of course so should beplanted now. Break them into theirindividual cloves and push into the groundin rows. Don't be tempted to use bulbsbought in the supermarket; go for certifiedvirus free bulbs. Some gardeners plant garlicamong their onions; it helps deter onion fly.

For advice on winter containers come alongto Stilton Gardening and Natural HistoryClub on October 18 when Claire Hugheswill demonstrate winter containers and, for£6, will provide plants and compost for yourown containers of hanging baskets to beplanted at the meeting.

Ear SyringingService

The numbers of patients requiring earsyringing is increasing. As a result of thisthe amount of nurse time taken up to do thisis limiting appointments being available forother things.

Ear wax is a common problem which canbe easily managed at home with simplemeasures.

Ear Syringing can be fairly traumatic to thelining of the ear canal and can lead toinfections and pain. Therefore we areencouraging patients to use an over-the-counter remedy such as:

1. Self syringing kits like the Otex Combiwhich breaks up and disperses ear wax.It is much gentler and is easy to use. Or:

2. Sodium bicarbonate or Otex Ear Drops. These ear drops are used to soften dry orhardened earwax.

If neither remedy works for you thensyringing is still available.

Flu JabsThis years 'Flu' Vaccination campaign willstart in October. Two 'Flu' Clinics arescheduled for Saturdays 1st and 15thOctober 2016, between 9:00 and 11:00am. NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY

Available for all patients over the age of 65and those in at-risk groups, who have beenroutinely vaccinated in the past.

Shake a Leg !A SHAMELESS PLUG FOR THE STILTON STUMBLERS

Sally Pinnegar’s article opposite emphasisesa simple truth: exercise is good for you! Butyou don’t need to be a committed gymbunny to gain benefits. An investigation bythe BBC’s Trust Me, I’m a Doctorprogramme showed that even a smallamount of exercise can often relieve jointpain more effectively than medication orsupplements. And it can quickly undo thedamage caused by too much sitting around.

So how to have an exercise regime that isenjoyable and sustainable? One easy optionis just to take regular walks; leave the carat home occasionally. But it’s even easierif you can do so in good company andinteresting surroundings.

That’s just what walking groups like theStilton Stumblers are for writes KelvinDavis. (No surprise that the local U3A hasmore walking groups than any other type.)

The Stumblers are not Ramblers; we havea great time but don’t take ourselves tooseriously. We meet every other Sunday fora 5-8 mile circular walk within a radius ofabout 30 minutes drive, ending up at apleasant country pub to relax afterwards. And once a year we head off for a weekendaway; this year we’re going to enjoy therugged beauty of northern Spain. To find out more, just Google for StiltonStumblers or see our regular ad in SCAN.

Keeping ourselvesfit and healthy

Sally Pinnegar is Stilton’s residentnutritionist and personal trainer. You maysee Sally and her collie and spaniel, Scoutand Lottie, running and walking every day.Her company (fitnaturally) helps people toimprove their health and well-being throughnatural eating and outdoor activity. Amento that we thought, so we were delightedwhen Sally offered to contribute articles toraise readers’ awareness. Here’s the first.

Can Diet and ExerciseMake Us Live Longer?

I’m going out on a limb here and saying abig unscientific YES!, writes Sally.Sometimes common sense overridesscience, but there is plenty of evidence thateating well and staying active lengthens life. Not just diet but whole lifestyle – eatingwell, being active, reducing stress, notsmoking, limiting alcohol, breathingunpolluted air, and so on.

WHAT’S IT WORTH?

Our bodies are like finely engineeredperformance cars; if we give them the wrongfuel and leave them in the garage they won’tfunction properly and then they’ll probablyfall apart and soon enough not start at all.But the value of our health is far greaterthan the most expensive car in the worldworld (£3.9m). In fact, if you were dyingand could buy your life back how muchwould you pay? It’s priceless, so we mustlook after it and prolong it.

WHICH REGIME IS BEST?

There are many studies looking at this orthat diet in terms of their longevity effects;the popular Mediterranean diet is thoughtto be very healthy. But essentially it’s downto simple everyday factors, essentiallyeating all natural foods in moderation, alongside daily activity and a non-sedentarylifestyle. Like, don’t drive if you can walk;don’t take the lift if there are stairs. Revertto a more natural and active way of living.

WHAT TO DO THEN?

Ageing is the progressive loss of physicaland mental capabilities. It’s inevitable, butwe can slow it down and go a long way topreventing some of the major killer diseasessuch as heart disease, stroke and cancer.

When you wake up each day have a goodthink about being alive, and the privilegethat it is. Think about what you will do thatday to look after your body the best youcan. Treat it as if it was your last day andthen someone said you could live on if youdid X, Y and Z today (eating healthily, notbeing stressed, taking exercise).

Your life is in your hands. You matter, notjust to you but to others. The world is a greatplace to live, so much to see, wonder at andexperience. Nobody should jeopardise thatby eating rubbish, not moving, and gettingstressed about ‘stuff’.

“What works good is better than what looksgood, because what works good lasts.” RayEames
