WINTER NIGHT SHELTER

Over three months, December - February, every Sunday night Stilton Church was ableto offer a hot meal, a warm and dry bed andan English breakfast for up to eight peoplewho had nowhere else to go. Another sixchurches in the Peterborough area coveredthe rest of the week.

Over this time a total of 403 beds wereprovided for 39 guests (nine of themwomen), supported by over 250 volunteersfrom 27 different churches.

In Stilton, around 40 people volunteered to

help in one way or another. 32 of them wereon the rota drawn up to cover the period wewere operating in the church, the othershelped as cooks or in the administration ofthe scheme. Particular thanks go to RachelMaltman who organized the rota whilecoping with a family bereavement and ayoung family, but she still did her stint'sleeping' in the cold of Stilton Church.

Everyone involved found this a positive, even uplifting experience; the guests wereinteresting people, some in employment butunable to find accommodation. It washeartening to be told that, at the end of theproject, 30 participants had accommodationnot always permanent, but they were nolonger on the street.

On March 9th 2016 Peterborough CityCouncil’s Planning Committee agreed to anoutline planning application to build over500 extra houses on land previouslyearmarked for employment (Roxhill). TheNorman Cross Action Group, whichcomprises representatives from the localParish Councils and District, City andCounty Councils, objected, not against thechange to housing, but on grounds thathighlighted the inappropriateness of thisapplication at this time and the breaking ofpromises over the use of the Old Great NorthRoad.

Our major objection was to the building ofa huge housing estate on a greenfield sitewith no facilities except a one-form entryprimary school; no shops, secondary school, doctors or other health services, pub, villagehall, public transport etc. With no plans tostart Great Haddon in the near future weforesee pressure on those services in thesurrounding area.

There were no plans presented to show thefinal road layout, inside the development,or points of entry/exit. It is obvious thatprevious promises to greatly restrict the useof the Old Great North Road will be brokenbut there is no money available to improvethe dangerous junction at the A15 by theEagle monument. Indeed, the plannersconfidently predicted that residents wouldgo south by first going north through theindustrial area to the parkway! Secondaryschool children would be directed to Ortonschools; they could walk or cycle, againthrough the industrial area with HGVs, anddivert to the footbridge over the parkway,a trip of nearly a mile.

We left the meeting feeling sorry for anyoneliving here, but worse was to come. Twodays later we were informed that theplanners were minded to breach their ownregulations by allowing the building of adistribution unit of 750,000 sq. metres and23/24 metres high. The present limit forthe proposed site is 15 metres. Also, thissite is the one nearest the proposedresidential area, separated only by a bund.Commercial sensitivities don’t allow thename of the firm nor the nature of itsactivities to be published.

Local GovernmentBoundary Commission

A review of the electoral arrangements ofHuntingdonshire District Council iscurrently under way. The aim is to drawward boundaries so that each councillorrepresents approximately the same numberof voters, as well as reflecting the identitiesof local communities.

The period of consultation ends on April 14and comments can be left on the websitewww.lgbce.org.uk. The present DistrictCouncil size of 52 councillors is likely tostay the same. There is a similar review forthe County Council.

It is proposed that we will become part ofthe Sawtry and Stilton Division with onecouncillor, not two as at present. This wouldinclude Folksworth, but Norman Crosswould be part of Yaxley and Farcet. Thenext election will be May 2017. The numberof councillors will fall from the present 69to 61.

Spuds-u-LikeENJOY THIS SEASON’S NEW POTATOES

We move away from the comfort food ofwinter to the early crops of new potatoes, rhubarb, asparagus, cauliflower, lamb andcrabs. These tend to be more expensiveingredients but are worth the extra for aspecial occasion as most don't last long.

ABOUT JERSEY ROYALNEW POTATOES

Like Stilton Cheese, these potatoes are nameprotected; they must be grown on the islandof Jersey. There are 20 farmers growingJersey Royals, some since the 1880s. Thetubers are kidney shaped with very thinskins and have a distinctive taste said tocome from the fertile Jersey soil.

For the first few days there is pleasure ineating the potatoes, scrubbed into boilingwater for 10-12 minutes and served withbutter and sea salt, but when the noveltywears off they can be made into fingersnacks. Boil the potatoes until just done, plunge into cold water, then cut a cross inthe top of each potato and put in a topping.Good choices are lumpfish roe, souredcream and cream cheese with herbs, mashedstilton cheese, or tuna and mayonnaise.

Bug LifeKEEPING THE PESTS OUT OF YOUR LAWN

From The Cabbage Patch

Stilton Gardening and Natural HistoryClub's last meeting enjoyed an entertainingand interesting presentation on how to lookafter a lawn. Particularly apt was instructionon dealing with pests that could attack thegreensward, particularly chafer grubs andleather jackets.

CHAFER GRUBSThe larvae of chafer beetles have curvedwhite fleshy bodies with light brown headsand they eat grass roots. Signs to look outfor are yellow patches and lots of birdstearing up the turf to get to the grubs, sothat the lawn becomes a churned-up mess.Cure is not easy; there is no insecticideavailable for amateurs so you have toemploy a professional lawn specialist, oryou can use a biological method andpurchase nematodes in April or September.

LEATHERJACKETSThe larvae of crane flies, aka daddylonglegs. They eat the stem and root of thegrass so the turf can be pulled up. Again, birds and wild life will flock in to feed onthese delicacies along the edge of the lawnswhere the grass dies off. Leatherjackets canalso burrow into potatoes. Nematodes areeffective controls, but the birds will be yourbest friends.

‘On some gravestones and headstonesit might say the letters RIP, whichstand for the latin requiescat in pace, meaning may the dead person rest inpeace. Tombstones are for people likeabbots, lords and ladies. Sometimes aperson is buried underground andsometimes in the tomb. On Tuesday 1st March 2016, Folksworthlost its oldest resident when Jan Wilkinsonslipped away, peacefully, in hospital fourdays after her 95th birthday, writes JeanThompson.

She had lived on Hawthorn Road for overthirty years and had established herself asone of the ‘characters’ of the locality. Bornin Cheshire, she had three siblings, all ofwhom predeceased her.

Having completed training as a nurse, Janserved at hospitals in the UK and Bermuda, where her husband John pursued his careerin teaching. They had two daughters andgradually the family circle grew. At the timeof her passing, Jan was the proudgrandmother of five grand-daughters andone grandson, and the adoring great-grandmother of six great-grandchildren. Hersubstance was not in extreme wealth orworldly possessions but in boundless lovegiven to and received from her family.

Well into her eighties, Jan was always tothe fore in village organisations, includingthe local branch of the WI (subsequentlyreplaced by The Ladies' Circle), TheEvergreens and The Art Club. She took partin each with great enthusiasm and was notafraid to speak her mind. Underneath asometimes stern exterior there lay a caringheart and a mischievous sense of humour. On the occasion of our Queen's GoldenJubilee Jan had the honour of presentingcommemorative beakers to the youngpeople of the village. It was a miserable day

and when asked if she would like a cup oftea she said she felt that a tot of whiskeywould be a better idea! Needless to say acup of tea was provided as it didn't seemappropriate to have the Guest of Honourbreathing alcohol fumes over the children! This lady of many talents loved gardeningand excelled at cooking and baking - herlemon drizzle cake and scones were to diefor! Rugby Union was another of herpassions; it was a brave person who phonedher when an international match was on tvas the reception was decidedly frosty andconversation short and to the point.

Our first meeting with Jan was at St. Helen'sChurch where she was a regular worshipper.Wilson and I were on holiday visiting ourfamily in Folksworth and went to church asalways. At the end of the service Janwelcomed us warmly and invited me to TheLadies' Circle meeting the following week. This was the beginning of a friendshipwhich made our transition from city life inIreland to village life in this community anenjoyable, rather than daunting, experience.

That was Jan; she made friendships whichlasted a lifetime. Wilson and I are privilegedto have shared life with her for almost 25years. On behalf of all her friends withinthis Parish, I extend deepest sympathy toSarah, Sheila, Robert, Steve and theextended family on their irreplaceable loss. When friends were leaving Jan, she wouldinevitably say ‘You won't forget me, willyou?’ Now that she has left us, we canhonestly say ‘No, never.’

Thanks as ever to the team at SCAN forallowing me to report on some of the mattersI have been dealing with on behalf of localresidents.

LITTER AND FLY-TIPPINGThe District Council responded to myrequests to clear the litter on some of theroads just outside the village; it wasparticularly bad along both sides ofCaldecote Hill. They have also followedup on my reports of fly-tipping on the sideof the road near turnings into Caldecote andDenton, and out towards Washingley.

DOG FOULINGThe District Council were also quick to acton my reports of dog fouling in the villageearlier this year. Unfortunately within daysof the council clear-up there were newdoggy deposits which I and other residentscleared up ourselves.

I have recently contacted the DistrictCouncil again to ask for the cleansing teamto make a return visit to Stilton to tackle thedog fouling on the High Street near theSports Field and the footpath betweenManor Road and North Street.Unfortunately dog fouling seems to be acontinual problem but I will continue towork with residents and the Parish Councilto try and tackle it.

SPEEDINGI recently spent some time with theCommunity SpeedWatch team in Holme, including observing the training offered tonew recruits and seeing SpeedWatch inoperation. I was impressed by what I sawand will continue to work with the ParishCouncil to set up a trial scheme in Stilton.

PARKINGParking continues to be an issue in ourvillage, most of which was built when noone could imagined the amount of trafficwe have now.

Recently I've been contacted about vehiclesfully or partially blocking pavements so thatanyone with a buggy or wheelchair can't getpast. I've also been approached about vansand larger vehicles being parked in a waywhich potentially makes access difficult foremergency vehicles.

I have made the Police aware of residents'concerns.

The new street lamp has been installed andI have chased up the County Council'scontractors to get the old one removed.

FOOTPATH AND ROADSURFACES

One of the things I enjoy about being ourvillage's District Councillor is seeing aproblem and getting it sorted. Some of thethings I have managed to get sorted sincemy last report are listed below:

● Following up a resident's report ofdamage to an area of the footpathalongside the Apreece Way green, reporting to the County Council andseeing it repaired the same day.

● I also reported the damage caused byroots to the footpath which runs betweenChurch Street and Cooper ThornhillRoad near the school, and the incompleterepairs to pavement damage in GlebeRoad (near the junction with ChurchClose.) Work on both of these has takenplace.

● After my reports to the County Council,I was able to have a site meeting withtheir local Highways Officer and one ofthe Parish Councillors to look at otherissues in the village. The damaged doubleyellow lines and the white lines near theshops have been marked up to berenewed. Repairs have been made tosome of the damaged road surface inChurch Street, including the layby nearthe school, the entrance to the cemeteryand the area of sunken road, includingthe drain grate, near the junction ofChurch Street and Manor Road. I haverecently reported the pothole which hasappeared in the High Street near The Bell.

CCTVI was also pleased to arrange a visit to theDistrict Council's CCTV control room formembers of Stilton Parish Council.

Dog FoulingTHE LATEST

Stilton Parish Council agreed with DistrictCouncillor Tim Alban that some new, perhaps more eye-catching notices, wouldbe helpful. However, we have been told thatto place notices on the new lamp posts needspermission from Balfour Beatty who willcharge £6.16 per notice to inspect eachproposed site and then £28.99 per noticewhen putting up each unit and £28.99 pernotice when one is taken down.

We will investigate the legality of signs onprivate land e.g. the ash tree in my garden.

Blood PressureHOW BLOOD PRESSURE

WORKSAs your heart beats, it pumps blood aroundyour body so that your muscles can get allthe energy and oxygen that they need. Todo this, your heart pushes your bloodthrough a network of blood vessels andarteries. As the blood travels through thearteries it pushes against the sides of theseblood vessels and the strength of thispushing is called your blood pressure.

HIGH, LOW, NORMAL BPGenerally, the lower your blood pressurereading the healthier you are as long as youare not getting symptoms like faintness.Blood pressure usually ranges between90-250 for the top or maximum number(systolic) and 60-140 for the bottom orminimum number (diastolic). Because therisk of heart attack and stroke goes up as aperson's blood pressure rises it is importantto control high blood pressure, even thoughit usually doesn't cause any symptoms whenit is raised.

HOW CAN I HELP MYBLOOD PRESSURE?

There are a few ways you can improve orhelp maintain a healthy blood pressure:

Reduce alcohol unitsStop smokingReduce salt intake(ideally 6gm of salt per day)Cut out fatty/processed foodsLose weightDo more exerciseBe activeEat more fruit/vegReduce sugar intake

It is a good idea to keep a regular check onyour blood pressure. If your blood pressureis normal and you have no other conditionswhich may affect your blood pressure thenonce every six months is fine. Here atYaxley we have an automatic blood pressuremachine in Waiting Room D which isavailable for patients to use. It is a goodidea to rest for 5-10 minutes before usingthe machine so your blood pressure is at abetter rate. It is also advisable to take threereadings so we can take the best one andrecord it on your medical records. Pleasetake the readings and hand into receptiononce you have taken your blood pressure.

If you do not want to use the machine orare unsure how to use it you can alwaysbook in with a healthcare assistant whowould be happy to help you with this.

So to conclude: stay active, be healthy andthis will promote a good blood pressure.
