Setting the Context• Broadening Advanced Technological Education Connections

(BATEC) is a national NSF ATE Center primarily focusing on computation and work in urban areas.

• National Convergence Technology Center is a national Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Center with National Science Foundation (NSF) funding primarily in the area of networking infrastructure/mobility/data communications

• National Information, Security, and Geospatial Technologies Consortium is a national 7-college, 6-state DOL TAACCCT consortium focusing on 4 IT specialty areas

BATEC Goals

• Define, extend and strengthen computing pathways and career opportunities for the 21st century IT professional.

• Facilitate and leverage strategic partnerships to build awareness, generate interest, and support learning opportunities in ethnically diverse urban areas.

• Conduct actionable research to inform policy makers, IT educators and workforce development agencies.

• Participate in and lead the national discussion on the subject of integrated curriculum and applied IT.

Challenges We Have Been Addressing• Employment Market-driven enrollments

Perception that “IT is dead” = Fluctuating enrollments

• IT Hybridization; IT Across Content Areas/Careers; Computational Thinking

• Traditionally autonomous education systems;“Siloed” departments delivering student services

• Industry Partners Integrally Involved in Work

• Coordination, Collaboration, Communication…

National CTC Goals

• Create convergence degrees and certificates driven by business need

• Provide professional development for faculty

• Recruit and retain underserved students

• Disseminate products and services

The concept for stackables:

Getting to Stackables

•What are They and Why?•EXCEL Story•CISCO Story•Computer Forensics Story

•BHCC implements the first in a series•Unaware there was a “name” for them
