STEM House Day—1st November 2017 What a truly magnificent day both the children and staff have had! We have been very fortunate in welcoming Selena and Ali from The Big Bang North West and Sue and Helen from Sci- ence2u and all the children in the school have been able to watch a one hour STEM Show which included fire, dry ice and even an indoor firework demonstraon. I’m sure your child will have something to tell you about the show. We are very grate- ful for all the staff who helped to make today such an inspiring and memorable day. Mrs Nicolaidis The children lucky enough to join the session with Mrs Nicolaidis had to design and create a boat. The boat had to be strong enough to float and to test this the children had to count the number of pennies they could put on the boat before it sank. The winning design was the one which carried the greatest weight. Mrs Jones/Mrs Owen Mrs Ng/Mr Jepson Two separate sessions where children were invesgang how to create a rocket using a balloon. They had to build, esmate and measure how far they thought their balloon would travel and test it independently. They were challenged to find a way to make the balloon travel for one metre. Miss Tolley The children listened to the story of Iggy Peck, Architect and had to create a bridge that would hold 80 gems. They had to make their bridge using only straws. Miss Ireland/Miss Dugdale During this session the children had different weights of paper and they had to make as many different items of furniture using paper and tape. By the end of the day the children were able to furnish a full house. Children were also given the opon to make the strongest and tallest tower using only straws and spaghe. It looked very messy but definitely enjoyable. Mrs Cooper/ Mrs Moran Two separate acvies where children had to design and make a paper plate marble maze using a variety of resources. Lots of the children were keen to make some very difficult mazes. Mrs Pennington Using large pieces of card and a range of construcon kit, the children were challenged to create a marble run. They were able to amend and improve their designs aſter tesng them out.

STEM House Day—1st November 2017 What a truly magnificent day both the children and staff have had! We have been very fortunate in welcoming Selena and Ali from The Big Bang North West and Sue and Helen from Sci-ence2u and all the children in the school have been able to watch a one hour STEM Show which included fire, dry ice and even an indoor firework demonstration. I’m sure your child will have something to tell you about the show. We are very grate-ful for all the staff who helped to make today such an inspiring and memorable day.

Mrs Nicolaidis The children lucky enough to join the session with Mrs Nicolaidis had to design and create a boat. The boat had to be strong enough to float and to test this the children had to count the number of pennies they could put on the boat before it sank. The winning design was the one which carried the greatest weight.

Mrs Jones/Mrs Owen Mrs Ng/Mr Jepson

Two separate sessions where children were investigating how to create a rocket using a balloon. They had to build, estimate and measure how far they thought their balloon would travel and test it independently. They were challenged to find a way to make the balloon travel for one metre.

Miss Tolley The children listened to the story of Iggy Peck, Architect and had to create a bridge that would hold

80 gems. They had to make their bridge using only straws.

Miss Ireland/Miss Dugdale During this session the children had different weights of paper and they had to make as many different items of furniture using paper and tape. By the end of the day the children were able to furnish a full house. Children were also given the option to make the strongest and tallest tower using only straws and spaghetti. It looked very messy but definitely enjoyable.

Mrs Cooper/ Mrs Moran Two separate activities where children had to design and make a paper plate marble maze using a variety of resources. Lots of the children were keen to make some very difficult mazes.

Mrs Pennington Using large pieces of card and a range of construction kit, the children were challenged to create a marble run. They were able to amend and improve their designs after testing them out.

Mrs Moat During this session the children were challenged to make the strongest and tallest tower using lolly sticks, pegs and cubes.

Mr Keen Using a wide range of resources the children had to try to ‘Beat the Flood’. This activity looked at protecting houses and communities from flood water. The children used thinking skills to investigate materials.

Mr Dean Mr Dean worked with the children to create a design for a glider which the children were able to test outside and measure the distance that each one flew.

Miss Lawler The children were asked to work creatively and imaginatively to design and make an activity centre for a hamster using a range of recycled materials.

Mrs Gibson During this activity the children had to use their engineering skills to design and build a bridge strong enough to hold 8 cars using just straws and newspaper.

Mr Henaghen In this group the children worked together to design and build a four storey structure using cups, cubes and lolly sticks. It was very challenging!

Mrs Morris The children listened to the story of Rosie Revere, Engineer before creating a community constructing buildings using a Polydron kit.

Science2U Workshop Two groups of children from Key Stage 2 were lucky enough to learn how to make bath bombs. Unfortunately not everyone was able to do this activity but all the children appear to have had a fabulous day learning about science, technology, engineering and maths. Thank you to everybody who has taken part in this house day. We often hear from parents that children don’t always share very much information about the activities they complete in school each day. Hopefully this newsletter will give your child a reminder about some of the different STEM challenges they have been faced with today.

Mr Gibson This group have been using large guttering to create a giant marble run with children having to work as a team to get the ball from one side of the playground to the oth-er.
