The pool at your home can be dangerousStatistics from rescue services in-dicate more calls from water-re-lated emergencies and drowningfrom inland swimming pools thanfrom accidents or drownings atsea.Clive Humphrey from ADT Se-curity says that residential swim-ming pools should be better safe-guarded and that no child underthe age of seven should be permit-tedtobealoneinaswimmingpool.“We have always urged resi-dents to take pool safety seriouslyand to be extra vigilant at ensur-ing that swimming pools are offlimits to small children.“One should never leave chil-dren unsupervised in the pool ar-ea and, remember when havingguests over not to assume thattheir children can swim. Ratherkeep the pool area off limits if indoubt.”Newregulationsrecentlyadopt-ed in Johannesburg, with whichHumphrey agrees, stipulate thathomeownersmustreceiveacertif-icate of compliance and that allresidential swimming pools mustbe surrounded by a wall or fencethat complies with the NationalBuilding Regulations, which istall enough to keep a seven-year-old child out.

“We also suggest that your poolfence or wall has a self-lockingmechanism that children cannotaccess or open,” Humphrey adds.Apoolnet or cover, withincertainspecifications, may also be ade-quate.Humphrey stresses to all poolowners across South Africa thatit isessential tomakesurethepoolnet is in good condition. “A per-ished net will not be able to sup-port a child’s weight and will tearshould a child fall in.”Domestic workers’ children of-tencometostaywiththeirparentsduring the school holidays, so itisalsovital thatdomesticworkersare properly educated on the poolarea rules, especially if you areworking or away.Better still allow a domesticworker to take swimming lessonsif they can’t swim.“I cannot stress enough the im-portance of having pool safetymeasures in place in your home.Besides the physical safety meas-ures you can put in place, whynotequip your domestic worker witha panic button she can carry onher person. Having access toemergency services at the touchof a button could make all the dif-ference,” says Humphrey. Children under seven should never be left unsupervised at the pool.

Entrepreneur: Racing to the top or the bottom? In the first of a series of columnsaimed at helping young entrepre-neurs, which will be published intheGazette regularly, David Mal-herbe writes about price:

What makes Apple (Computersetc.) such a strong brandworldwide?Their products are waymore expen-sive than any of their competitors’products, yet almost everybodywould like to have one.I can assure you that trying to sell

products cheaper than their compet-itors is definitely not part of their

marketing strategy. Many business owners spend a lot

of energy and planning onwhat theycandotosell theirproductsorservic-es cheaper than everybody else.Unfortunately, in the vast majori-

ty of cases this is not sustainable andwill consume all your energy.

The race to the bottomSethGodincalls this therace to the

bottom; when a cheaper version ofyourproduct or service comeson themarket, people will substitute yourproduct or service for the cheaper

one and you’ll once again have to cuton your price to stay in the game. You really don’t want to win the

race to the bottom.

The pursuit of excellenceWhatmakesApple so successful is

that they elected rather to go for therace to the top, whichmeans tomakeexcellence the goal they want toachieve.Their motto is that they want to

make their products beautifully de-signed, simple touseanduser friend-ly.

It is well known that the late SteveJobs was adamant that every prod-uct had to be only the very best.Jobs was once confronted with a

situation where the mother board ofa newmodel had to be finished with-in a very short period of time. Whenhe looked at the work the developerdid, he remarked that it was not neatenough. The developer said that the specif-

ic part is something that nobodywillsee and that the limited time availa-ble, makes it impossible to finish theproduct off that well.

Steve Jobs immediately got threeextra people to help the developer, but he insisted on the best quality.Producing excellent quality is not

the quickest way to grow your busi-ness, but it is for sure the way to goif you would like to grow a lastingbusiness. If youcompromiseonqual-ity, you compromise your business’future.*DavidMalherbe is a business and

Cyclists, athletesbewareMarch and April are big event months for cy-clists and runners with the Cape Argus Pickn Pay Momentum Cycle Tour and the Old Mu-tual Two Oceans Marathon respectively.

As race days draw closer, avid athletes willno doubt be going the proverbial extra mile toensure that they are fit and ready.

This may mean squeezing in additionaltraining – possibly early in the morning or inthe evening.

Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Securi-ty Western Cape said training is important, butso is one’s safety.

“It is very important to let someone knowthat you are heading out and when you expectyou will return.

“This means that if you are not home asscheduled, the alarm can be raised immediate-ly and no time will be wasted in the event ofan emergency.”

He had these tips for those who will be partic-ipating in any kind of athletic training in thecoming weeks:

) Try to avoid running or cycling when itis dark outside.

) Do not go out jogging or cycling alone; in-vite family or friends to go with you.

) Before you leave home ensure that yourcell phone battery is charged.

) Take along enough money to be able tocatch a bus or taxi or make a phone call if needsbe.

) Wear bright reflective clothing so motor-ists are able to see you easily; reflective stripson your shoes are not sufficient.

) Never go out running or cycling while lis-teningtomusicthroughearphones.Thismightprevent you from hearing an oncoming vehi-cle, a potential mugger or a vicious dog.

) Everyone – pedestrians, runners, cyclistsand motorists alike – must stick to the rulesof the road; motorists should observe the rec-ommended 1,5 m gap.

) Vary your route as often as you can andsteer clear of very quiet or unsavoury areas.

Dale added that it is also important to makesure your family and home are safe while youare out, even if it is just for an hour or two.

“Activate the alarm system and always en-sure that you have locked the front door andgates properly behind you.”
