As a family owned, independent businesswe discuss, decide and implement quicklyto respond effectively to changingcustomer demands.

A family storyOffering a premium service and pioneeringnew products and processes has alwaysbeen part of the Silvery Tweed traditionsince 1843, when millwright Henry OgleShort first set up in business.

He supplied regional bakeries, breweriesand animal feed suppliers, often withbespoke goods. Now, five generations on,Silvery Tweed Cereals is providinginnovative solutions to blue-chip foodsector businesses across the UK andbeyond.

In 1922 we introduced speciality flours toour product portfolio, adding Robinson’sBarley Water to our list of prestigiousclients. In the 1980s, we were amongst thefirst to experiment with coating cereals forthe newly emerging muesli market, asector in which we remain a major player.

Investing in the futureThe move to our current purpose builtpremises in 1998 provided us with theopportunity to modernise our plant andexpand. Since then we have invested over£7 million in state-of-the-art equipment andadded speciality blending to our portfolioof skills. In 2009 we produced our firstown-label product - granola.

We remain a family business at heart. Our success is built on trust, flexibility,responsiveness and an eagerness to listento what our customers want, then to deliverit, adding value along the way.

What we doA wide range of processing plants andefficient management procedures give us theflexibility to deliver a variety of complexservices for a range of applications.

In our industry, quality and traceability areparamount. Across the range of processes wedeliver, we offer complete peace of mind. Byusing predominantly sealed, stainless steelplant and a comprehensive system ofcontamination detectors - magnets, sieves,metal detectors and x-rays - backed up byquality control checks on intake and finishedgoods, we guarantee the highest qualityassured products.

Cereal processing:

Kibbles, flours and flakesWe clean and process grains - wheat, rye,barley, chick peas, rice - direct from the farm,offering a variety of treatments including steamcooking, flaking, kibbling, milling, conditioningand torrifying.

We also produce a range of malt flours andspeciality flours.

Blending:

Powders, grains, flakes and improvers Our comprehensive blending plant combinesup to 15 separate ingredients including flours,cereals, seeds and powders at any one time,thus minimising processing times andmaximising productivity. Extensive palletisedstorage facilities allow long production runswhilst the plant layout and design allows foreasy cleaning, enabling us to switch rapidlybetween customer orders for optimumefficiency.

Seed cleaning and blending:

A combination of highly skilled staff andsophisticated equipment - with infra-red andcolour sortex detectors - ensures we areconstantly improving seed quality to exceedindustry standards.

Coating:

Adding value and varietyWe offer a range of sweet and savourycoatings, from blackberry syrup to sage andonion, which can be applied to any number of seeds, cereals and breadcrumbs. We can pre-treat ingredients, by toasting or malting, and can add further processes such as cluster-forming (for granolas) or dry-blending(typically for mueslis) with additional dried fruit,chocolate pieces, seeds and cereals. Whererequired, we seal the completed product incustomers’ own-label packs or boxes.

Range:

A wide range of flaked grains for a variety offood sector applications.

Core materials:

Wheat, barley, rye, rice and maize.

Sourcing:

Grains are sourced from within the UK throughtrusted merchants with whom we have workedover many years to establish good relations withlocal growers. We buy grains only fromaccredited growers who can demonstrate thatthey share our commitment to quality inpurchasing, cultivation, harvest and storage. It isvia this commitment that we are able to maintainfield-to-table traceability.

Uses:

Breakfast cereals, cereal bars, brewing and thebaking industry, as either single grains or aspart of a blend for added value finishedproducts such as bread toppings.

Options:

Typically grains are steam cooked, toasted thenrolled with flake thicknesses varying from0.8mm to 2mm. However, we can manufactureflakes in a wide variety of formats to suit enduse specification.

Options:

All our flours are milled through traditional dryprocessing methods without the use of anychemical extraction or wet milling techniques.

We also offer heat treated and low moistureflours through our steaming and dryingprocesses.

Blending & Seed cleaningTotal product control for brand protection and totalpeace of mind.

Blending

With the scope to blend small to large bulkbatches, our recipe-driven computerisedblending lines offer optimum flexibility.Operating at a maximum blending and packingspeed of up to nine tons per hour, we can packfrom 5kgs to 25kgs on small bulks as well asIBC bags up to 1000kgs.

With two lines in operation - one sesame-free -we meet a range of customer blending needsand our efficient clean-down methods allow forfast turnaround and maximum efficiency.

By offering a complete blend we reduce theweighments customers need to do in-house,minimising production time and negating therisks associated with handling and dustproduction.

Standard in our blending operation is our finalproduct x-ray process which together with theuse of in-line magnets and sieves gives ourproducts their contamination protection.

Seed cleaning

By cleaning to the highest purity levels, we helpminimise our customers’ exposure toconsumer claims so help protect their positivebrand image.

Opened in 2006, our seed and grain cleaningplant offers a full range of processes. It is usedto reduce foreign materials such as strawknuckles and ergot, or to remove discolouredgrains. Via our colour sorter and x-ray systems,we can deliver up to 99.98% purity on finishedproduct, providing real peace of mind.
