Learning about our history, heritage and governmentChristopher Jackson, Principal and Roving Reporter

For many young Australians, the only time they will ever visit their national capital is when they participate in an excursion to Canberra with their school.

Orchestra to perform at farewell concertThe Nemingha Orchestra will be performing in a lunchtime concert at 1.30pm on Tuesday, 25 September. This will be the last concert conducted by Mr William Blaxland. Unfortunately, due to work commitments he will be unable to continue tutoring students of brass.

We would like to thank him very much for all the effort he has put into teaching his students, composing music and conducting both the orchestra and concert band. His talents will be missed.

Everyone is very welcome to attend the short concert on Tuesday.

By visiting Canberra, students develop a deeper understanding of how we’re governed and our Australian identity, fostering a sense of national pride.

This week our Year 5 and 6 students, along with Toni Reid, Yvonne Webb and I, have been treading the pavement around our nation’s capital. It started with a visit to Telstra Tower on Monday evening. We were able to spot various landmarks about Canberra from the top of Black Mountain. Max Satori was keen to see where Parliament House was and Blake Tongue was amazed at the new colours of light projected onto the Australian Mint at night.

On Tuesday the group participated in the “We Will Remember Them” tour through the Australian War Memorial. Hayley Williams had special treatment from the tour guide, Robert, when he found that it was her birthday by allowing her to ask extra questions. Riley Gentle, Maddison Betts and Paige Breen read the ode out in the tomb of the unknown soldier for each group, which was a very moving experience.

In the afternoon it was the Australian Institute of Sport that caught many of the students’ eyes, with visions of completing on the international stage sometime in the future. Our guides, Tara and Liv, were netball and track athletes who showed us around the incredible facilities at the AIS.

Yesterday the group spent the morning at Parliament House, learning that there are 4,500 rooms housing over 8,000 employees. We saw a number of politicians working on the Senate and House of Representatives floor. The tour guide,

Rebecca, was impressed with our students’ knowledge of our government.

I was very proud of every one of our Year 5 and 6 students and my heart swelled with pride when a guide at Questacon went out of his way to congratulate Nemingha students saying that they were one of the best schools he had seen. “They were so well behaved waiting in line and showing kindness towards others,” he said.

This excursion wasn’t just about participating in a wide range of programs in Canberra, building our students’ understanding of how we are governed but it is also about cooperation, resilience and organisation skills allowing them to manage being away from home and most importantly having fun.

What’s cooking in the CanteenMeal DealWe will be having our Term 3 Meal Deal next Monday, 24 September.

The deal is a grilled chicken burger with cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise and your choice of flavoured milk for $6. Please return your order form attached to a brown bag by tomorrow, Friday 21st.

Reminder: Under the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy we are not permitted to sell sausage rolls, pies or hash browns at recess. All other menu items are available to order at recess and lunch.

Strawberry MoosiesPre-packed frozen treats such as the Twisted Frozen Yogurts and Moosies fall into the “Occasional” food category. We have recently discovered that unfortunately the strawberry Moosies do not meet the 3.5 Heath Star Rating required of “Occasional” foods to be sold in NSW canteens. As a result we will only be stocking chocolate Moosies.

We are in the process of discovering new frozen treats that will fall into the “Everyday” food category.
