INTRODUCTION The Nepal Environmental and Scientific Services (NESS) P Ltd. was established in 1992. NESS is a leading consulting firm in Nepal. It is well recognized in the field of engineering, environmental and natural resource management studies, and social and socio-economic studies of the development projects. The NESS operates a fully equipped environmental laboratory, the first accredited

laboratory in Nepal, which is enlisted in the Ministry of

Environment, Science & Technology and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of the Government of Nepal.

NESS has completed over 160 researches and consulting

assignment in environment and natural resource management sector.

As recognition of its contribution in the environmental studies in Nepal, the NESS has been awarded “Environmental Excellence Award 2003” by the Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE), Government of Nepal. The NESS is proud of being the first to take such honour among several consulting firms working in the environmental sector of Nepal.

Founded in 1992, Nepal Environmental & Scientific Services [NESS] (P) Ltd is a company of professionals and experts that embrace four core principles: Senior Leadership, Integrated Services, Quality of Works, and Personal Business Relationships.

NESS is a Japanese & Nepalese-owned company that provides comprehensive engineering, environmental and social studies, and several other scientific services. Our technical expertise includes planning and engineering design of infrastructure projects, environmental impact assessment studies, environmental and social studies as required by international financing institutions, project management, construction supervision of infrastructure projects, water and waste water studies, treatment & management, pollution monitoring and mitigations, various laboratory analytical services and many more. Our environmental laboratory is first accredited laboratory in Nepal and since its establishment it has been providing various analytical services and specialized facilities for testing food, water, waste water, aggregate, soil, fertilizer, pesticides, coal, fuel hydrocarbons, air pollutants, plant matter, cement, spirit and alcoholic drink, and volatile organic compounds.

oran Sharma (PhD) completed his doctorate in geology in 1979 in India and joined department of mines and geology, government of Nepal in 1980. After working 6 years with the government, he joined Yagai-Kagaku Co., Ltd, Sappro, Japan as an environmental specialist. He subsequently joined College of Sciences, University of Ryukyu, Okinawa, Japan (1984-1985)

and completed post doctoral research in physical environmental science. He returned to Nepal in early 1993 to become director in Nepal Environmental & Scientific Services (NESS) P. Ltd. Since then Dr Sharma has been involved with providing consultant services on a diverse number of project types including hydropower (generation and transmission lines), water supply projects, agriculture, road, forestry, industries etc.

He specializes in physical environment, environmental assessment of infrastructure projects (with focus in large hydropower projects), environmental management, and project management. He has completed numerous environmental studies in a capacity of team leader. SALIL DEVKOTA, B.E./ M.E. Managing Director and Environmental Engineer Key Skills: Environmental Investigation, Environmental Assessment, Environmental Monitoring and Mitigation, Environmental Management

alil Devkota has over 18 years of experience in multiple aspects of environmental consulting with emphasis in environmental assessments, environmental monitoring, designing and implementation of environmental mitigation measures for large hydropower projects, and

preparation of environmental documents. Mr. Devkota has prepared several environmental assessment reports for large hydropower projects in Nepal. In addition, he is responsible for preparing reports meeting IFC performance standards for hydropower projects in Nepal. He has completed numerous environmental assessment and impact statements for hydropower, road, commercial complex, health care institutions, hotels and resorts, and parks. Mr Devkota holds a bachelor in engineering from Mysore, India and a Masters in Environmental Policy and Management from University of Denver, Colorado, USA.

He is responsible for the administration of all projects from proposal preparation to final close out. He is responsible for the development of the technical approach for proposal, interfaces with client, and various disciplines (i.e engineers, ecologists, surveying, planning etc), on technical design on scheduling, is responsible for QA/QC, and works with regulatory/GoN agencies on securing timely approvals. He has project implementation experience in major projects of Nepal namely; Kali Gandaki Hydroelectric Project, and Melamchi Water Supply Project. Besides he has worked in a capacity of environmental specialist with the World Bank, and ADB responsible for ensuring environmental and social safeguard compliances in projects funded by them. He was appointed as Task Force Member on Environment, Ministry of Population and Environment (March 1997 – Feb., 1998) and Environment advisor, National Planning Commission (NPC), Government of Nepal for preparation of Ninth Plan in the areas of environment, agriculture, water supply & sanitation and forestry sectors (Sept., 1996 – May 1998).

ishore holds M.S/Zoology, Limnology from University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Prior joining NESS, Mr. Kishore Kumar Upadhyaya has served over 30 years to the Government of Nepal. He has served the government in different capacity. He has started his career as

fisheries development office and retired in a position of director general of the fisheries department, government of Nepal. During his tenure has gained expertise in fisheries research, fish breeding, hatchery and nursery management, different training for technician and farmers, field supervision and monitoring and provide technical assistance to farmers. Some representative work of Mr Updhayaya in his area are as follows;

Prepared Periodical Fisheries Development Plans such as 7th to 10th National Fisheries Development plans of the Government of Nepal.

Studied Limnology and Zoology from the University of Alberta, Canada for master's degree Studied and prepared dissertation paper on Benthic Maroinvertibrates of 5 Alberta Lakes, 1990-1992.

Conducted Impact Studies on Aquatic Environment and Fishery Resources of Kali Gandaki River Systems due to Hydroelectric Project in Syangja District of Nepal. He has played a key role in fisheries mitigation program at Kali Gandki HEP (144 MW). He was the lead fisheries expert for the survey of Kali Gandaki fishes, design of fish trapping and hauling program, construction of fish hatchery and social enhancement programs.

This scope of this study includes; preparation of a power development plan for 20 years from 2013, and clarify the importance of storage type hydroelectric power development, select promising storage type hydroelectric power projects from 67potential projects listed in the long list prepared by the NEA, taking into account the technical, environmental, economic and financial issues. A screening of potential projects was conducted and 31 projects are passed this screening in the result. Under consideration to more detail of technical, environmental, economic and financial issues, 10 promising projects are selected. Mr. Sharma’s role in this study was to identify the social impacts of each projects and weigh the projects based on impacts. In addition to this he was responsible for assessing the issues related to resettlement and rehabilitation for the projects.

Mr. Sharma was former member of National Planning Commission of Government of Nepal. Sharma holds B.S in economic from Nepal and an M.S in resource economics in development planning from University of East Anglia, United Kingdom.

him holds Ph. D. in Geography/Population from University of Hawaii, U.S.A., 1993, and Master Degree in Geography (Nepal). Dr. Bhim Prasad Subedi has an impressive career in field of migration, livelihood studies of the poor, population and environment relations. Over the last 30

years he has acquired and amassed vast knowledge and experience in the field by providing his expertise and knowledge at various capacities. He carried out Doctoral research on migration focusing on continuity and change in a village of Eastern Nepal in the late 1980s. Since then he has been involved in teaching and research in this area. He has completed more than 20 research articles (and chapters) published in national and international publications including International geographical Union- Commission on Globility and Marginality; Kyoto University, Japan; University of Bergen, Norway, Migration Letters, Population Geography on the theme of migration. Besides, he has worked as Team leader in the study of population pressure in Nepal carried out by MOPE/UNFPA, as Co-Investigator in the National Migration Survey 1996 which was based on nationally representative probability sample survey of about 2000 households from 600 clusters in 73 districts, as a population specialist carried out studies of the Hindu-Kush Himalayas for ICIMOD and of environmental planning and management in Kathmandu valley for IUCN. He has working knowledge over professional software like GIS, AUTOCAD, HEC- RAS, DUFLOW, ODIRMO, MIKE 11, MIKE BASIN etc. and programming languages such as FORTRAN, PASCAL and BASIC. He has also developed software, which is used to simulate and analyze hydraulic transients in Hydropower plants.

He has coordinated and conducted several training courses in hydropower engineering. He has served as a Resource Person for several National as well as International Trainings and Workshops. He is also the author of several training and course manuals. He has published a number of papers in National and International journals, conferences and seminar proceedings.

egh Raj Dhital holds D.Sc in geology from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan and M.Sc (with honors) in Applied Geology from Peoples’ Friendship University, Moscow, Russia. Dhital was the head of department of Geology department of Tribhuvan Univesity. He has over 25

years experience working in different countries namely Nepal, India, China, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Norway through European Union/ICIMOD for the study of landslide and mass movements in various parts of Europe. He was involved from DFID as a Landslide Review Consultant for the Landslide Risk Assessment Project. Dr. Dhital is involved as a consultant geologist to NESS. Dhital has woked as a head of Mountain Risk Engineering Unit of Tribhuvan University. Through MRE, Dhital and his team carried out landslide stabilization works at Dhuskun, Naguche, and Ghimire Chhap areas, Barabise area, and a part of the MRE Nepal Project (1997-1999).

Recently he was involved in preparing land side risk assessment and vulnerability mapping for Upper Seti HEP through NESS. He was also the team leader of geological team for conducting “master plan study of reservoir projects in Nepal”. This project was awarded to NESS by JICA. Dr. Dhital lead the team of 12 geologist in carrying out feasibility study of 8 selected reservoir projects of total (2200 MW). The finding of the study shall be used as a basis for selecting storage type hydropower projects in Nepal. He is providing a regular input to NESS in areas of GIS, geological mapping, vulnerability assessment, mitigation management.
