UL 2024 has been revised and reissued. The fifth edition was initially issued on March 24, 2014 and then revised and reissued on January 9, 2015. Signaling and optical fiber raceways were dropped from the standard to correlate with the 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). The 2015 edition of UL 2024 has been revised to correlate with the testing requirements in sections 4.3.11.2.6 and 4.3.11.5.5 of NFPA 90A-2015.

The requirement of 4.3.1.2 that vertical ducts serve not more than two adjacent stories in height shall notapply to phenolic duct constructed to ANSI/SMACNA 2015 Phenolic Duct Construction Standards.

Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Input

Creates a new section to accommodate phenolic ducts, a new air distribution material and the corresponding new industry consensus standard, ANSI/SMACNA 2015 Phenolic Duct Construction Standards. Phenolic ducts, when constructed vertically and when constructed to ANSI/SMACNA 2015 Phenolic Duct Construction Standards do not have limitations of not more than two adjacent stories in height.

Air connectors are limited-use, flexible air ducts that shall not be required to conform to the provisions forair ducts where they meet the requirements of 4.3.2.1.1 through 4.3.2.1.5 6 .

4.3.2.1.1

Air connectors shall conform to the requirements for Class 0 or Class 1 connectors when tested inaccordance with ANSI/UL 181, Standard for Safety Factory-Made Air Ducts and Air Connectors.

4.3.2.1.2

Class 0 or Class 1 air connectors shall not be used for ducts containing air at temperatures in excess of121°C (250°F).

4.3.2.1.3

Air connector runs shall not exceed 4.27 m (14 ft) in length.

4.3.2.1.4

Air connectors shall not pass through any wall, partition, or enclosure of a vertical shaft that is required tohave a fire resistance rating of 1 hour or more.

4.3.2.1.5

Air connectors shall not pass through floors.

An air connector shall not be interrupted by a short collar or any other fitting on one side and thenconnected to another air connector on the other side when penetrating (a) a floor or (b) a wall, partition orenclosure of a vertical shaft that is required to have a fire resistance rating of 1 hour.

Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Input

The requirement that “Air Connectors shall not pass through any wall, partition, or enclosure of a vertical shaft that is required to have a fire resistance rating of 1 hour or more” and “Air Connectors shall not pass through floors” is not sufficiently clear.

The confusion comes in understanding exactly what is considered “passing through”? ASHRAE’s TC 5.2’s Codes & Standards Interaction Sub-Committee extensively discussed this in meetings recently and they plan to request an interpretation from NFPA 90A & 90B about this.

It is known that Air Connectors are being used to transport air up to the plane of a floor or wall, then interrupted by a short collar or other metal fitting, and then continued on the opposite side. Many inspectors consider this as “not passing through” and thus are allowing it to be done. This should not be acceptable to NFPA 90A or 90B.

It is also known that Air Connectors are being used in basement applications where the ceiling is then finished out in gypsum board. Is this considered acceptable? In what plane is the “passing through” limitation considered? Can an Air Connector pass through floors in the horizontal plane?

It is important that the correct information is provided to users of NFPA 90A & 90B. It seems that some clarification is needed for this important aspect of Air Connector use limitation to be properly understood and conveyed.

Foam plastic insulation shall not be used as wall or ceiling finish in plenums unless the insulation meetsany one of the criteria shown in 4.3.11.6.2.1,through 4.3.11.6.2.2 , or 4. 3.11.6.2.3.

4.3.11.6.2.1

The foam plastic insulation material shall exhibit a flame spread index of 25 or less and a smoke developedindex of 50 or less when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84 E84 , Standard Test Method for SurfaceBurning Characteristics of Building Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface BurningCharacteristics of Building Materials, at the maximum thickness intended for use, and shall also complywith the following criteria, when tested in accordance with NFPA 286, Standard Methods of Fire Tests forEvaluating Contribution of Wall and Ceiling Interior Finish to Room Fire Growth ( where the testng shall beperformed on the finished foam plastic assembly related to the actual end-use configuration and on themaximum thickness intended for use) :

(1) Flame does not spread to the ceiling during the 40 kW exposure.

(2) Flame does not spread to the outer extremities of the sample.

(3) Flashover, based on the criteria from NFPA 286, does not occur.

(4) The peak heat release rate does not exceed 800 kW.

(5) The total smoke release does not exceed 1000 m2 (1196 yd2) when tested in accordance with NFPA286, Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Evaluating Contribution of Wall and Ceiling Interior Finish toRoom Fire Growth (where the testing shall be performed on the finished foam plastic assemblyrelated to the actual end-use configuration and on the maximum thickness intended for use) .

4.3.11.6.2.2

The foam plastic insulation material shall be covered by corrosion-resistant steel having a base metalthickness of not less than 0.4 mm (0.0160 in.) and shall exhibit a flame spread index of 75 or less and asmoke developed index of 450 or less when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84 E84 , Standard TestMethod for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test forSurface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, at the maximum thickness intended for use.

4.3.11.6.2.3

The foam plastic insulation material shall be separated from the plenum by an approved thermal barrierconsisting of 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) gypsum wallboard or a material that is tested in accordance with and meetsthe acceptance criteria of both the temperature transmission fire test and the integrity fire test of NFPA 275,Standard Method of Fire Tests for the Evaluation of Thermal Barriers Used Over Foam Plastic Insulation,and shall exhibit a flame spread index of 75 or less and a smoke developed index of 450 or less whentested in accordance with ASTM E 84 E84 , Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics ofBuilding Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of BuildingMaterials, at the maximum thickness intended for use.

With the introduction of automated energy management systems it is possible to have extensive time delays inherent to shutting down air handlers. Currently there is no maximum time specified to which fans must stop upon detection of smoke. Time durations in excess of 60-90 seconds have been observed in order to have a sequential and orderly shut down for the protection of the equipment. In a fire/smoke condition the air handler is the threat and should NOT be protected at the risk of the building occupants, first responders, or the protected property itself. Perhaps the Technical Committee would be more familiar with using the term “shunt” rather than “stop” which implies instantaneous shut down. The TC may also be more comfortable adding a time limit for the shut off.

UL 1381, Outline of Investigation for Aerosol Duct Sealant, provides requirements to evaluate these sealants for this application, including surface burning characteristics, mold growth and humidity, erosion, interior duct burning, leakage reduction, and durability. These tests are based on requirements in ANSI/UL 181, ANSI/UL 181A, ANSI/UL 181B and ASTM E2342. UL 1381 requirements are limited to application in ducts with individual openings no greater than 5/8 in. diameter, and seam/joint openings no greater than 5/8 in. across. These sealants are not intended for use as a substitute or to supplement mechanical attachment in the sheet-metal duct systems. These sealants are not intended for use with rigid fiberglass ducts, flexible-wire helix ducts, or spirally wound metal ducts not complying with SMACNA Standards.Aerosol duct sealants are intended to be applied by trained professionals and specifically in accordance with accompanying installation instructions.
