MILITARY DRILL

Following the Boer War (1899-1902) it was decided that the working classes who had been recruited into the army were ill-disciplined and unfit

Therefore in 1904 the MODEL COURSE was introduced – meaning a change in emphasis in schools.

Syllabus introduced after the First World War. With that and a major flu-epidemic the country was in pretty poor health!

Recreative exercises had been beneficial for the recovery of injured soldiers & this idea was extended to schools

Physical activity was seen to be enjoyable as well as having fitness & health benefits

The 1919 syllabus was designed to have a therapeutic effect
