    All hands on deck is a naval term meaning everyone on the ship get on deck (top of the ship) because something is going on that everyone is needed. Term is often used in an emergency when all hands available are needed to tie masts, steer, throw water out, release the anchor etc. The term is also used to indicate that the involvement of all members of a team is required.

    • Dr. Carolyn Rutledge, director of the Old Dominion University Doctor of Nursing Practice, was selected as a recipient of a 2014 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

  • University Awards• Kimberly Adams Tufts, associate professor of

    nursing, and Harry Zhang, associate professor of community and environmental health, received Diversity Champion Awards from the ODU Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity in spring 2014.

    • Richard Heller, professor of medical diagnostic and translational sciences, received the Frank Reidy Award for outstanding contributions to the field of bioelectrics.

    • Lynn Wiles, assistant professor of nursing, was selected as Most Inspirational Faculty Member by Sarah Howells, the college’s Academic Achievement Student in 2014.

  • Faculty Recognition• Richardean Benjamin, associate dean, was elected vice president of the Virginia

    Nurses Association (VNA) and selected to serve as a member of the Ongoing Treatment and Support Workgroup of the Governor’s Taskforce on Improving Mental Health Services and Crisis Response.

    • Michele Darby, Eminent Scholar and professor emeritus of dental hygiene, received the Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association meeting in June 2013.

    • Steven Becker, professor of community and environmental health, was appointed by the National Academy of Sciences to serve on a new scientific panel examining cancer risks in populations living near nuclear facilities. He also received a 2013 Award for Meritorious Service from the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors.

    • James English, associate professor of community and environmental health, was elected to the National Association of Environmental Health Academic Programs board of directors for a two-year term.

  • • Katie Ferrara, academic advisor, received a National Academic Advising Association Certificate of Merit as an outstanding new advisor, Oct. 2013

    • Janice Hawkins, lecturer of nursing, in 2014 received the National Academic Advising Association Region 2, Outstanding Advising Award and also received the ODU Faculty Advisor of the Year Award in 2013.

    • Dean Shelley Mishoe, elected to the board of directors of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions.

    • Roy Ogle, professor of medical diagnostic and translational sciences, and Lisa Koperna, lecturer of physical therapy, were selected as Entsminger Fellows to promote and teach entrepreneurship.

    • Bonnie Van Lunen, associate professor of athletic training, received the 2014 National Athletic Trainers’ Association Distinguished Educator Award (given to one AT educator from its 53,000 members)

    • Lauren Arlaud, of the School of Dental Hygiene and Lillian Thompson of the School of Community and Environmental Health, received the Outstand Staff Member awards from the College of Health Sciences.

  • Staff Achievements

    • Trina Hawkins completed a second year as Hourly and Classified Employee (HACE)president, served on the President’s Diversity Champion Award Selection Committee and attended the Virginia statewide Banner conference.

    • Lillian Thompson was recognized as ODU’s 2014 Hourly and Classified Employee (HACE) Staff Member of the Year at the annual HACE awards ceremony.

    • Laura Thom was honored as ODU’s 2014 HACE Rookie Staff Member of the Year during the annual awards ceremony.

    • Gordon Ward received a Waste Management Facility Operator License, Class I & III, in December 2013.

  • Dean’s OfficeDr. Kimberly Adams Tufts

    Assistant Dean for Interprofessional Education. She will lead the implementation of the recommendations and goals from the IPE Task Force to further incorporate interprofessional education in COHS curricula to achieve the core competencies of communication, teamwork, ethics and understanding of roles and responsibilities in the health professions. Dr. Adams Tufts will continue to teach courses in the School of Nursing and work with the Center for Global Health, in addition to her new role as the Assistant Dean for IPE. She and the Director of the Center for Global Health, along with faculty in the center and schools, will develop interprofessional global health experiences as one of many strategies to advance interprofessional education and practice.Dr. Adams Tufts will appoint an Interprofessional Education (IPE) Advisory committee that will work with her, the chairs council and the faculty to facilitate IPE initiatives within the college and our communities.

  • Center for Global Health

    Dr. Kathy Simms

    Research Associate, Center for Global Health, received a Ph.D. in Education in 2010 from Old Dominion University and a Ph.D. in Finance in 1996 from the University of Georgia. She also earned a M.T.A. in Tax Accounting and a B.S. in Accounting, in 1988 and 1987 respectively, from the University of Alabama. Previously at Old Dominion University, she was a Grant Development Specialist with the Office of Research.

  • School of Community and Environmental Health

    Dr. Manasi Sheth-Chandra

    Assistant Professor of Community and Environmental Health, received a Ph.D. and M.S. in Computational and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, in 2011 and 2010 respectively, from Old Dominion University. Previously she was a Statistician at Booz Allen Hamilton and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Old Dominion University.

  • School of Dental HygieneDr. Susan J. DanielAssociate Professor of Dental Hygiene and Chair of the School of Dental Hygiene, received a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Sciences in 2013 from the University of Mississippi, and M.S.Ed. In Curriculum and Instruction in 1979 from the University of Kentucky and a B. S. in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education in 1977 from the University of North Carolina. Previously she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene College of Allied Health at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

  • School of NursingMr. Chad M. Driscoll

    Lecturer of Nursing, received a Master of Health Science in 2002 from La Roche College, a Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia in 2002 from St. Francis Hospital and a B.S.N. in 1997 from St. Louis University. Previously he was a part-time Simulation instructor for the Nurse Anesthesia Program and is also the Lead Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Sentara Careplex and Sentara Bayside Hospital.

    Dr. Adrienne Grant Hartgerink

    Lecturer of Nursing, received a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2011 for the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Nursing in 1997 from Uniformed Services University and a B.S. in Nursing in 1987 from James Madison University. Previously she was Assistant Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Old Dominion University.

    Ms. Amy M. WagnerLecturer of Nursing, received an M.S. in Nursing in 2009 from Old Dominion University and a B. S. in Nursing in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Previously she was an Assistant Professor at Paul D. Camp Community College and also an Adjunct Faculty member at ECPI University.

  • School of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training

    Dr. Johanna M. Hoch

    Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Athletic, Training received a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences in 2012 from the University of Kentucky, an M.S. in Recreation Sports Science in 2008 from Ohio University and a B.S. in Human Performance and Sports Sciences in 2006 from Ohio Northern University. Since 2012, she has served as Administrative Assistant for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and Director of Clinical Education, Post Professional Athletic Training Program as well as Assistant Adjunct Faculty in the School of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at Old Dominion University.

  • School of Medical Diagnostic and Translational Sciences

    Mr. Anthony J. Pachuta

    Lecturer of Ophthalmic Technology, received a M. A. in Human Resource Development in 1999 from Webster University and a B.S. in Secondary Education Grades 7-12 in 1983 from the University of Concord. In 2013, he received a B.S. in Health Sciences from Old Dominion University and completed the Ophthalmic Technology program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Previously he was an Ophthalmic Clinical Instructor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

    Ms. Lori J. Wood

    Assistant Professor of Practice, Ophthalmic Technology, received an M.S.Ed. and a B.S. in Health Sciences, in 2012 and 1998 respectively from Old Dominion University and completed the Ophthalmic Technology Program from Eastern Virginia Medical School/Old Dominion University in 1997. Previously she was Director and Assistant Professor of the Ophthalmic Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School/Old Dominion University and an Adjunct Faculty member at Old Dominion University.
