Accommodations for English Language Learners in State

Students who do not speak English as their first language are often provided with certain testing accommodations on state assessments. For English Language Learners (ELLs), these accommodations can be described as direct and indirect linguistic support accommodations.1

• Direct linguistic support accommodations involve adjustments to the language (English and/or native language) of the test

• Indirect linguistic support accommodations involve adjustments to the conditions of the assessment (test schedule and/or test environment).

(Note: There are also non-ELL-responsive accommodations, which are not the subject of this StateNote and are not included in the table below. These accommodations include, for example, the use of assistive technology, the use of American Sign Language, the use of Braille, etc. These accommodations are typically for students with disabilities.)
