line 1 WHEREAS, March 2018 is recognized nationally as Social line 2 Work Month, and this year’s theme is, “Social Workers: Leaders. line 3 Advocates. Champions.”; and line 4 WHEREAS, The social work profession has its roots in the 1889 line 5 Chicago settlement house movement led by the “Mother of Social line 6 Work,” Jane Addams; and line 7 WHEREAS, The primary mission of the social work profession line 8 is to enhance and meet the basic needs of all people, with particular line 9 attention to the needs of, and empowerment through social action

line 10 and social justice for, those who are poor, oppressed, and living line 11 in poverty; and line 12 WHEREAS, Today, there are over 630,000 professional social line 13 workers in the United States, over 65,000 of whom are in line 14 California; and line 15 WHEREAS, There are approximately 8,000 graduate students line 16 in the social work pipeline in 23 accredited California State line 17 University, University of California, and private programs line 18 throughout the state; and line 19 WHEREAS, Professional social workers train in an intensive line 20 combination of classroom and community experiences focused on line 21 individuals, families, and communities in crisis and in need of line 22 help; and line 23 WHEREAS, Professional social workers provide services across line 24 the age spectrum, from prenatal to end of life services; and

line 1 WHEREAS, Professional social workers serve in diverse line 2 settings, including schools, courtrooms, health clinics, hospitals, line 3 senior centers, homeless shelters, nursing homes, the military, line 4 disaster relief, prisons, corporations, and in political office; and line 5 WHEREAS, Professional social workers who have served in line 6 Congress include the Honorable Ron Dellums, MSW, the line 7 Honorable Barbara Lee, MSW, the Honorable Karen Bass, MSW, line 8 and the Honorable Susan Davis, MSW, and professional social line 9 workers who have served in the California State Legislature include

line 10 the Honorable Mary Salas, BSW, the Honorable Patty Berg, B.A. line 11 in social work; and the Honorable Mariko Yamada, MSW; and line 12 WHEREAS, Professional social workers who have combined line 13 their leadership skills and knowledge of community development line 14 into distinguished positions include Arturo Rodriguez, MSW, line 15 President of the United Farmworkers Organization, and Caitlyn line 16 Ryan, LCSW, Director of the Family Acceptance Project; now, line 17 therefore, be it line 18 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That March line 19 2018 is proclaimed Social Work Month in the State of California, line 20 and the Assembly commends the California Chapter of the National line 21 Association of Social Workers for its role in advancing professional line 22 social work and promoting the well-being of the people of line 23 California, and also encourages all Californians to take part in line 24 March “Social Workers: Leaders. House Resolution No. 82—Relative to Multiple Sclerosis AwarenessWeek.

line 1 WHEREAS, The week of March 11, 2018, through March 17, line 2 2018, has been declared Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in line 3 recognition of the importance of finding the cause of, and a cure line 4 for, multiple sclerosis and to express appreciation to the National line 5 Multiple Sclerosis Society; and line 6 WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease of the line 7 central nervous system that affects an estimated 400,000 Americans line 8 across the country with nearly 200 new cases diagnosed each week; line 9 and

line 10 WHEREAS, More than 40,000 people in California are affected line 11 by this devastating disease; and line 12 WHEREAS, Twice as many women as men have multiple line 13 sclerosis, and most people are diagnosed between 20 and 50 years line 14 of age; and line 15 WHEREAS, While there is no evidence that multiple sclerosis line 16 is directly inherited, studies indicate genetic factors make certain line 17 individuals more susceptible than others; and line 18 WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, founded line 19 in 1946, funds more research, offers more services for people with line 20 multiple sclerosis, and provides more professional education line 21 programs than any other multiple sclerosis organization in the line 22 world; and

line 1 WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is the line 2 largest private supporter of multiple sclerosis research in the world line 3 and, for more than 55 years, it has funded innovative research and line 4 advocated for government support of important scientific inquiries; line 5 and line 6 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the National Multiple line 7 Sclerosis Society has been committed to heightening public line 8 knowledge and insight, and is currently planning several major line 9 statewide educational programs to raise awareness about the effects

line 10 of multiple sclerosis; now, therefore, be it line 11 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the line 12 Assembly declares the week of March 11, 2018, through March line 13 17, 2018, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week, and that the line 14 residents of the State of California are encouraged to join together line 15 in raising awareness and heightening public knowledge of this line 16 debilitating disease; and be it further line 17 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies line 18 of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
