February 2016 summary

daily / monthly view / download

A BRIEF OUTLINE

The news items featured are a

snapshot of broad tech startup

news published in February

2016. It is not a complete listing

of every startup-related news

item reported in the month, but

it is intended to be a snapshot of

developments in a number of

tech fields, and with a primary

focus on SE Asia.

These are delivered near-daily

at twitter.com/wadekwright.

Monthly summaries - like this

one - are also available: as pdf

downloads from the archives

and, for reading online now, in

flipbook format on Issuu.

Where possible, each item is

linked to the original source, or

to one of the syndicated sites

that reposts. This provides you

with the full article, in its origi-

nal context and on the platform

that published it. Importantly,

this also gives the author credit

for their work.

The hashtags featured are

clickable, linking to Twitter’s

search results for that hashtag,

allowing you to read a wider

range of items specific to your

area of interest.

welcome...Welcome to the first revamped edition of the monthly tech startup news sum-

mary, based on the daily Twitter feed delivered via @wadekwright.

Delivering a very basic monthly format between July 2015 and January 2016,

it’s been clear that, time permitting, the summaries would benefit from a face

lift and a little work. This is the first step in the revision process.

Whilst a work-in-progress at this point, the aim is to produce a print-friend-

ly item that delivers succint and useful information on the broad tech startup

scene, whilst delivering an office-friendly format.

Whilst my focus is Southeast Asia primarily, it’s difficult to separate a focus from

related items - do I, for example, ignore an interesting item about global fintech

developments, whilst posting Asian fintech startup news?

So, like the startup scene and every startup in it: a work-in-progress.

on hashtags used...The tags listed are simply a first-run at a classification system; some work, some

don’t. Some sit well together, broadly, whilst others don’t.

Clumping #ecommerce with #bitcoin and all things #crypto, whilst separately

grouping #fintech and all things #finance clearly doesn’t address the overlaps

between the content of each type of post; but, with the aim being to deliver to

specific audiences, this categorisation may work as a starting point.

This is something I’ll refine over time, realistically towards something more

focused and requiring less direct editing.

Colour coding is likely to work, alongside a gradual ‘cull’ of the less useful tags,

and those pseudo-duplicates (crypto vs cryptocurrency) that don’t add value.

As preface, this is admittedly a listing of not only Australian startup items, but also of tech and startup news of interest to

the Australian tech-focused community generally.

To illustrate, a US startup opening its doors in Australia is still noteworthy domestically, as it both highlights areas of

opportunity in Australia, and provides a reminder of Australia’s appeal as a market to the outside world.

comprehensive listing of all relevant

tags, but they may be useful as an at-

a-glance reference when seeking in-

South or Southeast Asia, or Oceania

(Australia and New Zealand).

Bear in mind that some locations don’t

currently have a very active startup

some hashtags may not deliver much

in the way of results.

Bear in mind also that, often, different

#startupSA - and so being specific

regarding cities can be a useful drill-

down, in this case #startupAdl for Ad-

elaide, South Australia’s capital city.

It can also sometimes be useful to

search for an interest by adding a

suffix like ‘news’ to the hashtag e.g.

CFOnews, VCnews etc, as below.

This listing may grow over time, de-

pending on both changes in the over-

all startup scene, and on the growth of

the tech space in different locations.
