A disproportionate share of today’s enterprise data is unstructured—accessed and stored across manifold environments, in multiple formats, all over the world. When we talk about building a standardized data architecture, what we’re really talking about is making a series of decisions—about cloud data sprawl and how to store and manage your data, no matter where it resides. Standardizing your storage plane lets you connect and manage data wherever needed so that you can provide access to developers and business units consistently and predictably, which simplifies your operations. When you’ve determined the requirements of the business, cleaned up excess code, and acknowledged technical debt and how far it will require you to go, one of the biggest obstacles you’ll face is integration: How do you bring it all together? (If you have no idea what we’re talking about, check out the Connect and Integrate e-book.)
Ultimately, by approaching your storage infrastructure in a holistic way—as distinct parts that must get along—you’ll be able to move past a world of disorganized data and applications. As you laser-focus on your new digital-first self, plan for a future in which you don’t have to worry about constant refactoring and rebuilding. Envision a future in which your IT teams are relieved of the burden of finding expeditious, but often temporary, solutions that require frequent tending—and all because you’ve taken the risk of living for (or possibly in) the future.
In the reference architectures that follow, we offer suggestions for new ways to tackle data architecture. We hope you’ll see something that sparks your imagination as you build a better system.

NetApp® Cloud Volumes Service supports Linux and Windows Workloads 1
NetApp® Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud supports Linux and Windows file share–based workloads, which eases management of the data layer. The following reference architecture depicts a client in an on-premises data center that is accessing an SMB cloud volume with Dedicated Interconnect. Global dynamic routing is enabled on the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) for on-premises access, allowing the cloud routers to import and export custom routes that can be added. Multiple virtual machine (VM) application instances in Google Compute Engine span on-premises application clusters and instances to access the same dataset.

Run your most demanding Windows file workloads in Azure. Azure NetApp Files easily handles complex, performance-intensive, and latency-sensitive applications with no code change. Azure NetApp Files is widely used as the underlying shared file-storage service in these scenarios: migration (lift and shift) of POSIX-compliant Linux and Windows applications, SAP HANA, databases, high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and applications, and enterprise web applications.
