Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve
During the first week of October, Starmount
mailed to you all a pledge card with a letter
signed by Kurt Kronenfeld and me. If you need
another pledge card, they are available at the
church and will be provided on November 5th
as well.
History shows that Starmount has been blessed
with members who give generously. From
inception, we have understood that our
financial commitment is part of our
discipleship. Consider this excerpt written 65
years ago, when Starmount was first chartered.
It comes from the minutes of Orange Presbytery. By way of background, our property
and its first building were all donated by sister churches and by Orange Presbytery (now
Salem). Thanks to our Librarian and Church Historian, Mary Jane Conger, for discovering
this gem of a quote:
“It is the hope of the sponsoring churches, the First Church and the Church of the
Covenant and Orange Presbytery that the building can be presented to the community
free of debt. The new congregation (Starmount), is to landscape and equip the building.
The congregation also expects to be fully self-supporting from the beginning, calling and
paying the full salary of its pastor and carrying a benevolent budget large enough to
challenge every member to personal, sacrificial giving.” (continued on page 2)

Continued from the
cover—
That hope of self-sufficiency
became a reality from the
start. Starmount grew
quickly fueled by the
newness of its surrounding
neighborhood and the
enthusiasm of a young church. We are still
blessed by members who give sacrificially
and we thank you all. Please know that by
giving to our annual budget, you are
honoring our Lord Jesus and his message
of Good News and of great joy for all
people. Let’s keep the Good News
brightly lit in a year in which we look
forward to calling a new pastor and
walking into the future that God has
prepared for us.
As always, thank you for allowing me to
serve with you all in this journey.
John A. Muse Interim Pastor/Head of Staff
As was the case last
year, my friend and I
will again
participate in a
gratitude challenge
for the month of
November. I express
my gratitude on a
daily basis: saying “thank you” to people
who hold the door for me or bring me my
food at a restaurant, just as examples. But
to think deeper about what it is for which I
am thankful is an intentional practice in
November. Specifically since attending
the CREDO conference in September, this
spiritual practice is one that – although
seasonal – will be of great benefit.
Leading up to Thanksgiving, it is a great
reminder for me to sit in awe about all
that God has done in my life and is
continuing to do.
I encourage you to join me again this
year during the month in a gratitude
challenge of your own. As for me, I post
daily on Facebook, using my status as an
acknowledgment that I am participating
in the practice and letting people know
for what I am thankful. There are other
options that may not be as “public”,
including: writing down one thing per
day for which you are thankful – perhaps
in a journal; taking a photo each day of
something for which you are thankful; or
identifying a word or phrase that
encapsulates one thing for which you
are thankful.
Why do this? Perhaps it will serve as a
launching point for continued reflection
past November. Perhaps it will help you
to acknowledge that there is, indeed, so
much for which to be thankful,
especially in today’s society of bad news
and negativity seemingly everywhere.
Or, perhaps, it will just simply serve as a
way to slow down, and say “thank you”
to a God that can and does provide so
much. As one adage I heard goes: “If
you woke up this morning with only the
things you thanked God for before you
went to bed, what would you have?”
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn
p.s. If I don’t say it enough, I want to say
“thank you” to each and every one of
you for the impact you have made on
my life and ministry up to this point. I’m
excited to see how God continues to
call this congregation to be God’s hands
and feet in the world in the months to
come!

Save the Dates – Please!
Years ago when Rhonda and I were
singing professionally in Europe, we found
the Christmas holidays a mixed blessing.
We had our collection of Christmas music
and movies from home and the savory
Christmas markets in almost every city in
Europe and a myriad of other festivities.
What was missing was a real church
experience. We attended various services
through the years, but we never quite felt
the connection we both craved.
Fast forward to today. We are back in the
States with two children and jobs and all
of the requisite activities and obligations.
We certainly feel a much deeper
connection to our faith through our
church and worship, but sometimes the
frenetic pace of all things “holiday”
threatens our joy. Does that happen to
you? Do you ever wonder if Jesus were
born today if we would react as those in
Bethlehem did so long ago? Would we
even notice?
Everyone has so many places to go and
so many things to do during this upcoming
season. I am asking you to consider
making our church a central part of your
Advent and Christmas this year. Let’s
come together to make this season a
reflection of the wonderful days we
remember from years gone by and a
warm, heartfelt acknowledgement of why
we celebrate Christmas. A selection from
the cantata by Joseph Martin that the
choir is presenting on Sunday, December 17
during worship struck me as particularly
meaningful in our current times.

Would I Miss the Miracle?
If angels filled the skies tonight, would I hear
them sing?
Would tomorrow find me saying it was all a
dream?
Would I leave my bed and go outside to hear
their song?
Would I go on sleeping until the morning
dawned?
Would I miss the miracle? Would I see the
King,
Or would my life be so consumed with
ordinary things?
Would I miss the wonder, the hope that
Christmas brings?
Would I miss the miracle? Would I see the
King?
If a stranger knocked upon my door tonight
in deepest need,
In my life would there be room for anyone
but me?
Would I hear the voice of God within a Baby’s
cry?
Would I open up my heart and welcome Him
inside?
Would I miss the miracle? Would I see the King,
Or would my life be so consumed with
ordinary things?
Would I miss the wonder, the hope that
Christmas brings?
Would I miss the miracle? Would I see the King?
While I won’t attempt to list all of the worship
and fellowship activities that will be offered
during this season, here is a list of those
activities by our Starmount Music Ministry so
you can ‘save the date.’ Part of the wonder
of Christmas is finding time to stop and
welcome the Baby whose birthday we
celebrate. Let us worship and sing together
as we anticipate His coming. Most of all, let
none of us miss the miracle!
Blessings,
Bob

Advent Devotionals Coming Soon! Advent begins on December 3.
Instead of producing a devotional in-house
this year, the congregation is invited to use
“Advent Journey”, which is a product of
Illustrated Children’s Ministry. Utilizing
scripture passages from the Revised
Common Lectionary, the devotion will allow
the community to journey through Advent
together, providing questions to talk about
as a family or to ponder individually as you
prepare for Advent and the Christmas
season. The devotions will be available
beginning November 26. If you have any
questions, please ask Pastor Kathryn.

Personnel Committee
Update – Town Hall
Meeting
The end of the year is a busy time for
Personnel. We recognized our staff on
October 29th during worship, at the Town
Hall meeting, and will honor them with our
annual staff luncheon on November 7th.
Our church staff has been the constant in
a sea of change over the past two years.
They ensure that all the activities and things
we enjoy that make Starmount a wonderful
place to worship and fellowship continue to
run smoothly. We were blessed to celebrate
four staff members’ 10-year anniversaries
this year. Starmount is a blessed church!
Personnel is working to fulfill a Session
request to evaluate our staffing model.
The congregational Mission Study
completed in 2016 by the Transition team
clearly indicates where to focus and this has
been the basis of our staffing model work:
Maintain– strong mission focus, music
and fellowship programs, and member
involvement
Grow– outreach, diversity, caring ministries
Develop – Christian education, worship
choices, fun programming
We participated in a survey to gain a view
of other churches and how we compare.
Starmount sits in a very unique position.
We are looking at many data points and
Starmount doesn’t neatly fit into any
comparison category. A good indicator
of congregational health is weekly
attendance. Our average weekly
attendance has declined since 2014.
Comparing ourselves to churches with
similar weekly attendance, we find that
we don’t look like those churches in other
areas - membership, operating budget,
building size, staffing, etc. These all indicate
that we should have higher weekly
attendance. We also have a stronger focus
on missions, significantly less
debt and are a diverse
congregation in terms of age,
race and economic status.
Starmount is a blessed church!
Looking forward to 2018, we will welcome a
new Head Pastor and present our findings
to Session. We wish Starmount and our
congregation Thanksgiving blessings. Committee Members: Josh Nelson – chair,
Kim Dawson – co-chair, Jennifer Dowler,
Donna Bailey, Libbi Gundaker, Cathy
Ingram, Hannah Vaughan, Ben Stahr, and

College Addresses Needed! Are you a college student who is out on
your own? Are you the parent of a college
student who is out on his/her own? As the
school year begins, the church database will
“graduate” high school graduates to being
their own households, regardless of whether
or not they are still living at home. To that
end, we would like to continue to be in
touch with them while they are away from
Greensboro, including newsletters, notes of
encouragement, and care packages closer
to the end of the fall semester. In order to do
this, the staff needs the most updated
address for these newly established heads-of-
household. We encourage you to log in to
the church database (through the Star
Connect portal on the church’s website) or
to be in touch with Laura Roberson. Please let
her know if you have any questions. Thanks for
helping us keep up with you!
In October, SPY raised over $500 for the
CROP walk and enjoyed a fun afternoon
together along with Laura Roberson, Pastor
Kathryn, Susan Porter, Elaine Gustafson and
Evelyn Garrison! They also did some art
projects for the youth lounge; ask a SPY
about it when you see them. Coming up in
November, SPY is participating in the PYC
Mission Day in Clemmons on Nov. 4th and
going to the All Church Retreat as a SPY
family. At the end of the month they will be
packing and sending care packages to our
SPY alum who are in any kind of higher
education. Join us for any of our events; our
calendars are throughout the church!

Oh, My Aching Back! How often have you
heard this phrase or said it
yourself? Our lifestyle – lots of
sitting and not enough regular
exercise – creates the perfect
environment to cause our backs
to ache. Can yoga help?
The answer is a qualified “yes.” Coming
to yoga class once a week is not guaranteed to
“fix” your back if it has had years of neglect. But
yoga can help you strengthen the muscles that
support your back and make it less likely that
you will be saying, “Oh, my aching back.”
Back pain is often not caused by a weak back
but by weak abdominal muscles. When we sit,
our abdominal muscles relax and the back is
left without support. Making sure that your lower
back is supported when you sit is the first thing
you can do to protect it. Very few of our chairs
offer enough lumbar support, so you can roll a
towel or use a small pillow behind your lower
back to give your back a firm surface to press
against.
The second best way to protect your
back is to do what your mother always told you
– pay attention to your posture! Good posture
balances your body and relieves imbalances
that pull on your back. When you stand and
when you sit, your head should be balanced
over your shoulders and your shoulders over
your hips.
Where does yoga come in? Iyengar
influenced yoga pays particular attention to
correct alignment as well as making you more
aware of how all the muscles, bones, ligaments,
etc. work together. Yoga invites your spine to
move in all eight directions to either keep or
build mobility in your spine. Standing work
challenges your muscles to get stronger.
Stretching releases tight spaces in your body.
And yoga makes your body feel strong and
relaxed – both of which make your back feel
better. Just ask any of the yoga students from
Starmount classes!
Look for the yoga flyers at the visitor and
reception desks to see the schedule of classes.
If you have questions, please contact Jennifer
Dowler at [email protected] or catch
Jennifer at church. Or you can just show up at
a class. Namaste!

Happy Birthday Starmount Presbyterian

"The congregation of the new
Presbyterian Church was formally organized
at a 3:00 p.m. worship service on November
16th at the Presbyterian Church of the
Covenant. In an hour and a half service, the
special commission appointed by the
Orange Presbytery went through a ritual that
officially formulated the congregation…

About 100 people were at the service to
be the first charter members. One could
become a charter member up until May 17,

In Defense of Civility, How Religion Can Unite America on Seven Moral Issues That Divide Us Call no. 230 Ga 2011, by James Calvin Davis. “Davis is not offering simple resolutions for divisive issues like abortion, same-sex
marriage and environmentalism. To the contrary, he bluntly states that "civility cannot guarantee consensus on any issue" (160). Davis seeks first to describe and justify an ethic of civil public dialog and second, to embody the ethic by describing seven particularly sticky moral/political issues. Above all Davis underscores not merely the legitimacy, but also the potential benefits of recognizing religious perspectives in the public sphere. The book provides crucial food for thought for those reflecting on the tone of political dialog generally, those who aren't waiting for another election year to care about the political process, and those who think religion deserves either a stronger or weaker presence in political discussions.” Publisher’s blurb Call no. 205 Da 2010
The Sin of Certainty, Why God Desires Our Trust More Than our ‘Correct’ Beliefs by Peter Enns. “Enns offers a model of vibrant faith that views skepticism not as a loss of belief, but as an opportunity to deepen religious conviction with courage and confidence.
This is not just an intellectual conviction, he contends, but a more profound kind of knowing that only true faith can provide. Combining Enns’ reflections of his own spiritual journey with an examination of Scripture, The Sin of Certainty models an acceptance of mystery and paradox that all believers can follow and why God prefers this path because it is only this way by which we can become mature disciples who truly trust God. It gives Christians who have known only the demand for certainty permission to view faith on their own flawed, uncertain, yet heartfelt, terms.” Publisher blurb Call no. 234.23 Enn 2016
The Other Jesus, Rejecting a Religion of Fear for the God of Love by Greg Garrett. “According to recent surveys, many Americans associate the label ‘Christian’ with judgmental attitudes, hypocrisy, a fear of hell, and a commitment to right-wing politics. Author Greg Garrett
suggests another way, arguing that a faith that
focuses solely on personal morality and the afterlife misses much of the point of Jesus' message. This other way of following Christ is not concerned with an array of commandments or with holding the ‘right’ beliefs. Rather it is centered on loving each other and loving God, what Garrett calls ‘love’ where the rubber meets the road, where faith meets the world." Personal and moving, growing up in--and leaving--a disapproving conservative church and then finding his way back into a different kind of Christian community, one that is communal, missional, just, and loving. Garrett draws on popular culture to illustrate his spiritual points, showing how authentic Christian truth can be found in unlikely places, and suggests how the richness of the Christian tradition contains continued truths for the 21st Century.” Publisher’s blurb Call no. 230 Ga 2011
The Book of Joy, Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu. “An unexpected delight of this book is the frequency and ease with which these two men bring forth their playfulness, wit, wisdom, and laugh-out-loud humor, even when they are
immersed in profoundly deep discourse. What I found personally most rewarding was the teaching that ran through the book that had to do with the many ways in which it is possible to find joy even in the most difficult of times. Both of these men have endured great hardship and adversity both in their own lives and in the lives of millions of their countrymen, women and children, and yet their extraordinarily brilliant spirit shines brightly through every page of this amazing book. How do they do it? The Book of Joy truly fulfills its promise to answer that question.” Amazon.com reader Call no. 294.3 Dal 2016
