PASTOR ’S Staff) for those interested in applying.
Keep in mind that your PNC has only been
interviewing candidates for a few months. In
July, your PNC updated the congregation on
the progress of their interviews. That update is in
the July newsletter and can also be referenced
on our webpage. I am pleased to report that
your pastoral nominating committee
continues to interview minister candidates
and they are on schedule. They will update
the congregation again in September.
Note that Presbyterians choose pastors
differently than Methodists, Roman Catholics,
and Anglicans. In those traditions, a bishop
appoints a pastor to a congregation. There is
no “interim” time for Methodist and Roman
Catholic congregations because the bishop
simply appoints the candidate (whose
employment requires that he or she accept
the position) and congregations have no
voice in the selection. Presbyterians, however,
value religion by the people for the people
and with the inalienable right to elect our
leaders and those who will serve us as pastors.
Since we do not have the office of bishop to
appoint, there is an interim period between
the time when pastors leave and when
another pastor enters.
That’s where we are. Meanwhile, ministry at
Starmount is not on hold. Through this process,
Starmount has worked together under the
leadership of two interim pastors. It’s a credit
to our congregation that we have been busy
throughout this transition time with a mission
trip, a youth conference, tutoring and even
baptizing and receiving new members into the
life of our church. Most recently, we hosted 82
children during Vacation Bible School. We will
continue to focus on our mission to reach out in
the name of Jesus. We ask that you join us in
worship, fellowship activities, and prayer as we
prepare for the next chapter in our history
which God is preparing us for.
Grace and peace,
John
When I first began as your
bridge interim pastor in June,
I told both the Transitional
and Personnel Committees
that I would constantly
update Starmount on where
we are in the process of
selecting a new minister.
Here is a summary of key events which bring
us up to date.
September 16th of 2015, Rev. John Odom
announced his resignation to accept a new
call. October 26th of 2015 was his last
Sunday. Shortly after, the session appointed
a Transitional Committee to hire an Interim
Pastor. The process of interviewing and
selecting an interim pastor takes time in itself.
Ray Mims began as our interim pastor in
March of 2016 and for the next several
months led Starmount through a Mission/
Vision Study. Each church seeking a new
pastor must complete a Mission/Vision Study
and ours was completed on October 23,
2016. It’s important to note that a typical
Mission/Vision Study takes eight months toa
year to complete, so although our Mission
Vision was completed a year after John
Odom left Starmount, Ray kept our transition
on track comparable to other Presbyterian
churches.
After the Mission Vision Study, a congregational
meeting was held on December 11, 2016 to
elect our Pastoral Nominating Committee.
Kurt Kronenfeld, Brad Smith, Gary Anderson,
Frances Gallagher, Kris Kattmann, Libbi
Gundaker and Campbell Buchanan serve
on your Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC).
At that time, the Presbytery of Salem trained
your committee on the interview process
and helped them write a church job posting.
That training took approximately three
months. In March of 2017, Starmount
officially published our Church Information
Form (church job posting for Senior Head of

Milestones in Faith
Pastor Kathryn and Cindy Lee have been
working this summer with professional advice
from Gaye Brown and Kathryn McCrary to
assemble a new Foundations of Faith
Formation document to begin the 2017-2018
school year. The Milestones identified in the
document will serve as a roadmap for what
children should be learning by a certain age,
including The Lord’s Prayer, certain important
Bible verses, and worship concepts. Kathryn,
Cindy, and the Faith Formation Committee
are excited to incorporate these milestones
into the curriculum for the upcoming program
year. If you would like to see a copy of the
milestones, please ask Pastor Kathryn or Cindy!
Lillian Steele Residency Update
The Personnel Committee and Youth
Council, with the support
of Session, has been
diligently working to fill the
position of Lillian Steele
Resident for the 2017-2018
program year. GREAT
NEWS! At its August Session
meeting, it was unanimously
decided that Laura
Roberson be hired as the
first Lillian Steele Resident for Youth and
Young Adult Ministries. Laura, a Greensboro
native, recently graduated from UNC
Chapel Hill with a concentration in
Geography and Sociology. During her
studies, Laura worked for Young Life,
volunteering in the Pittsboro area schools.
By her senior year, Laura was serving as
coordinator of other volunteers, working
closely with parents and others for the
success of the program. Laura looks forward
to connecting with Starmount’s youth at
their school events, after school to talk
about life, and during Starmount’s activities.
Laura will be coordinating events for the
youth of Starmount, connecting with young
adults in the congregation and the
community, and leading worship as she
utilizes this year-long residency to discern
her call to ministry. Please give Laura a
warm Starmount welcome when you see her!
Guinness and the Good News
Guinness and the Good News continues at The
Porterhouse Bar & Grill! If you are a young adult
and would like to enjoy fellowship, food, and
great conversation, meet Pastor Kathryn and
others at 4608 W. Market Street (between
Montrose and N. Westgate Drive) for the
gathering’s next installment on Wednesday,

CROP WALK-October 15th!
We are excited to be participating
once again in the Greater Greensboro
Crop Walk! This event is always such
an inspiring scene: hundreds of our
Greensboro neighbors gathering at
the Grasshoppers’ stadium and walking together
in the name of fighting hunger. The walk partners
with Greensboro Urban Ministry and Church
World Service to raise money to feed the hungry
both locally and throughout the world. Feeling
helpless about how to make a difference in these
troubled times? Make a commitment to walk for
those who can’t and join our Starmount Crop
Walk Team! Contact Evelyn Garrison to sign up
to walk with our team on October 15th, and you
can begin collecting sponsorships from friends
and neighbors. The more walkers we get, the
more money we can raise! (And the more fun
the Crop Walk will be for all of us!) If you can’t
walk this year, please sponsor our team with a
donation. Step by step, we can make a difference!
Youth & Young Adults
6 Starmount Presbyterian Church
Leadership
Preschool Committee
September brings a lot of buzz to the
halls of Starmount with the start of
another school year at Starmount
Preschool. This year is no exception!
Enrollment at the start of the year is at
record-levels, including a waiting list in
more than one class. The hard work and
dedication of Preschool Director, Cindy
Lee, and her teaching staff continues to
pay off, including being named Favorite
Preschool in Greensboro by Triad Moms
on Main in 2017!
The Preschool Committee and Cindy
want to make sure that you are aware
of two very important preschool-related
events coming up this month:
Susan White Helping Hands Fund Offering
Susan White was a beloved and
devoted church member who served as
preschool director for many years before
she retired. After her retirement, the
preschool wanted to honor her by
creating the Susan White Helping Hands
Fund. This fund assists families going
through a short-term crisis, like
a parent losing a job or a medical
emergency. Through this Fund, we
have helped many families during
difficult times over the years. On Kickoff
Sunday each year, we have a special
collection during the offering specifically
for this Fund. This year, the Preschool
Committee is already aware of multiple
families in need of receiving help from
this fund. Please prayerfully consider
giving to the Susan White Helping Hands
Fund during Kickoff Sunday or at any
time throughout the year as you may be
able.
Fall Consignment Sale!
Since the fall of 2010, Starmount and its
Preschool have held a bi-annual
consignment sale: once in the fall for fall
and winter clothing and accessories,
and once in the spring for spring and
summer clothing and accessories. The
proceeds of the sale benefit the Susan
White Enrichment Fund, which provides
the Preschool with supplemental
learning for its students, including The
Creature Teacher, music, and a new
science component for this year. This
fall’s sale is quickly approaching:
September 19-21. Those who consign
receive 70% of their sales; if consignors
successfully complete two two-hour shifts
during the sale, they receive 80%! If you
would like to consign items, volunteer
during the sale, or provide snacks and
support to those working the sale, please
speak to Megan Chandler or Cindy Lee.

New Yoga Class beginning September 14:
Out of the Chair!
Some of our longtime chair
class students have developed
their yoga skills to the point
where they need a little more
challenge. So we’re meeting that challenge
with a new class called Out of the Chair. Out of the Chair will be a gentle yoga class
that will be accessible for anyone who can
get down on the floor. It will include standing
asanas (poses) for strength building as well
as bringing in many other opportunities for
stretching, flexibility, and balance work
including kneeling and lying on the floor.
The class will be more gentle than the
current classes offered at 9:30 on Friday
and 5:30 on Sunday.
Out of the Chair will be appropriate for
students who have been attending chair
classes, but it is also a good opportunity for
students who have been apprehensive
about stepping into the more challenging
classes. Out of the Chair will be reactive to
the bodies of the students who come to the
class.
Out of the Chair classes will begin on
Thursday, September 14, at 11:30 am. If you
are interested in attending, simply wear
comfortable clothes in which you can move
easily. If you have a yoga mat, please bring
it, but we do have plenty of mats and other
props available in the yoga room.
If you have questions, please contact
Jennifer Dowler at [email protected]
or cell phone 336-312-9589. The September
class schedule will be:
Chair Classes – 11:30 -12:30 on Tuesday
and Friday
Out of the Chair – 11:30-12:30 on Thursday
Beginner/Intermediate Classes – 9:30 on
Friday and 5:30 on Sunday
Co-Ed Class – 7:00 on Wednesday
______________written by Jennifer Dowler
At a meeting on September 29, 1952 at
First Presbyterian Church, a committee
of ten was named to obtain Charter
Members for Starmount Church.
From the Sept. 27, 1992 Session meeting:
"Jim Layman reported for Betty Hankins
that the Foundation/Memorials
Committee has developed a prioritized
list of needs … submitted by sessional
committees... The top needs: new
telephone system, repairs and
replacement for playground equipment,
portable sound system, VCR's and TV's
for upper level classrooms … sound
system for nursery so workers can hear
worship."
"Deacons want better communication
between boards and for the
congregation. They suggest having
minutes of both boards available in the
library for anyone who wants to read
them.”

Take Time for Your Life, A
Personal Coach’s Seven-Step
Program For Creating The Life
You Want by Cheryl Richardson.
“If you're tired of living a life that
feels out of control and are ready to live
life on your own terms--while still meeting
your responsibilities--get ready to take
action! Packed with useful exercises,
checklists, concrete advice, client
success stories, personal anecdotes, and
a wealth of resources, Cheryl Richardson's
seven-step program shows you how to
identify and eliminate the things in life
that are draining you and replace them
with the things that fuel you. She gives
you permission to put yourself at the top
of your list. By doing so, you will find not
only more energy and more enthusiasm
but also that your relationships, your
finances, your work, and your sense of
well-being are improved and better
balanced. Whether you're a corporate
executive working sixty hours a week, a
single parent trying to raise a family,
someone starting his or her own business,
or going back to school, Take Time for
Your Life shows you how to step back,
regain control, and make conscious
decisions about the future you'd like to
create. Richardson's strategies for
overcoming the obstacles that block you
from living the life you want will help you
discover a world in which your priority list
reflects your true desires. Take time for
your life--and begin living a life that you
love.” From publisher Call no.158.1 Ric 1998
The Girl With No Name by
Diney Costeloe. “A gripping
and moving novel about a
child who escapes from Nazi
Germany to England on the Kindertransport.
Lise is thirteen when she arrives in England
in August 1939, with just one precious
letter from the mother she will never see
again. Bullied at school for being German,
worse is to come when the Blitz blows her
new home apart and she wakes up in
hospital, with no memory of who she is or
where she came from. Only the letter in
her pocket gives a clue as to her identity,
so the authorities give Lise a new name,
make her a ward of court and dispatch
her to a children's home. But one person
is sure that she is still alive - Harry, the
trouble-prone boy who protected her at
school is determined to find and rescue Lise
again if he can.” Publisher’s blurb Call no. F

ONE CHURCH, ONE BOOK Hidden Figures, The American Dream and
the Untold Story of the Black Women
Mathematicians Who Helped Win the
Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly
The book, which was also an Oscar-
nominated hit movie, is the incredible
untold story of three African-American
women working at NASA who served as the
mathematical brains behind the successful
launch of America’s first astronaut into
orbit, John Glenn…Many of the women
recruited for the Space Task Group came
from Woman’s College, now UNCG.”
Copies of the book are available at
church. Attend the discussion on Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. or Sept. 20 at noon. Both sessions
will be in the library. Please sign your name
to the card in the book and leave on the
table, or bring to check-out basket in the
library. The books need to be returned to
the Church Library by Sept. 24th so Mary
Jane can return them to the Public Library.

additional members to assist in this weekly task.
By helping serve the church in this way,
volunteers would go shopping for simple
continental breakfast items (fruit, juice, pastries,
etc.) and set them up by 8:45 on the designated
Sunday morning. With the submission of the
receipt, full reimbursement would be available.
If you would like more information or would like
to assist in this way, please contact Brenda Triplett
or Pastor Kathryn. Thanks for prayerfully considering
this request!
