Significant New Zealand printmaker and painter Stanley Palmer shows a variety of
techniques and processes from screen prints in linen, to his pioneering bamboo
etchings and from lithographs to paintings in his exhibition ‘New Prints and Paintings’.
Stanley Palmer has developed a unique printing process using a combination of
lithograph and bamboo etching. The effect is distinctive, showing the subtle texture
of the bamboo plate while capturing the wide range of tones and colours. With six
new prints for 2010, the landscape of the New Zealand coastline is depicted as
rugged, natural, and with only small remnants of human life; a red roofed building, a
mailbox or a winding road.
Large-scale screen prints on linen show a new and innovative part of Palmer’s art
practice and demonstrate his wide range of skills, techniques and understanding of
form and colour while capturing the essence of the land and native plant life.
Stanley Palmer’s work shows deep connection to the New Zealand landscape.
Environmental Issues are prevalent, particularly the forever-changing coastline of
New Zealand. As well as an overall feeling of peace and tranquillity, there is a sense
of an underlying threat of loss.

STANLEY PALMER
b. 1936, lives Auckland
Nikau Punakaiki (2008)
Stanley Palmer ‘s rugged and beautiful landscapes are expressive, emotive and distinctively
New Zealand. Using painting and printing techniques, he has developed a unique and
personal style that captures the essence and colours of our natural coastlines, rural scenes
and native flora.
“Often focusing on the coastline – the border across which the colonisers and the colonised
first tentatively merged – Palmer’s work is imbued with a sense of loss, yearning and
disappointment.” (1) Stanley Palmer’s works show a deep connection to the New Zealand
landscape and speak of environmental issues.
Stanley Palmer has established himself as one of New Zealand’s most significant printmakers. A
“method of printmaking that Stanley Palmer employs is one that he invented. It is a
combination of engraving and lithography, using bamboo rather than metal as an etching
plate. Engraving on a wooden surface is much easier, it can be done with tools rather than
with acid, and requires less pressure to print. Less pressure allows more control of any ink
applied directly to the plate and maintains the subtle texture of bamboo grain as an integral
part of the design.”(2)
Stanley Palmer lives in Auckland and has worked as a fulltime artist since 1968. He began
exhibiting in 1958 and has an art practice that covers both painting and printmaking
processes including bamboo prints, woodcuts and monoprints. His works are part of Public
and Private collections including Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, Wellington,
City Art Gallery, Auckland and The Dowse Art Museum, Wellington.
