Stanhope Top Legendairy Town
Organisers Kerrie Gray and Andrew Hipwell with Stanhope legend Alec (yabby) Nelson and in the background members of
the many Stanhope organisations.
Last week Stanhope was declared the Legendairy Town within the Murray Region of Victoria. In a campaign, which included almost every community group within the Stanhope district and led by the organisers Kerrie Gray and Andrew Hipwell, representing the Stanhope Football/Netball club as well as the Auskick kids, a huge effort was undertaken to convince Dairy Australia that Stanhope was deserving of being recognised as the Legendairy town of the Murray Region. Typical of the Stanhope community, when a large and worthwhile effort is required, the community as a whole, combines to show how united they are. Every effort was made to win the award of $2,500.00 for being the Legendairy town of the Murray Region, which will go towards the establishment of a playground for young children at the recreation reserve, so they can be entertained while their parents are engaged in football, netball or cricket, or any other form of entertainment being held there. Stanhope, by being declared the winner of the Murray region, automatically becomes one of eight dairy communities throughout Australia that are now eligible to receive the National award of a further $7,500.00, by being declared the Legendairy Town of Australia. Amongst the Stanhope organisations involved in supporting the Legendairy campaign were, the Stanhope football/netball club, the Auskick kids, the Stanhope cricket club the Stanhope primary school, the Stanhope fire brigade, the Stanhope & District Development Committee, the Stanhope & District Men’s Shed. The Stanhope Business Centre and many of the Stanhope businesses, including Fonterra. A big thank you must go to Blake Rosenberg for organising the group photo at the Recreation Reserve.

Snr Constable Bob Naismith appointed to Stanhope
Snr Constable Bob Naismith with his wife Bev
in the new police residence during the open morning earlier in the month.
Snr Constable Bob Naismith, who has been the local policeman at Stanhope for more than two years, was recently officially appointed to the position. His appointment to Stanhope was strongly supported by local organisations, as well as local individuals. Bob, who has a lifetime experience in the police force was extremely happy with the appointment. Open House On Saturday 11th July, the recently completed police residence was opened for inspection, with many locals taking the opportunity to have a wander through this rather magnificent home, which is adjacent to the police station. Bob and his wife Bev will be taking up residency in late July or early August. This is the first time Stanhope has had a resident police officer for many years.

Stanhope Kindergarten The Stanhope Kindergarten children are still excited after a hard afternoon planting some trees for Schools’ Tree Day. The weather wasn’t very good but that didn’t stop us from heading out to Pekin's farm. All of the children helped to plant the trees, put the weed mat on and add the tree guards...many children are handy with a hammer. Thanks to the Greater Shepparton City Council for the trees and shrubs.
Thank You Stanhope community wish to thank Chris, Mary-Ann and Keagan for their long service over 23 years and wish them a healthy, happy and prosperous future.

Early closing date for next edition of About Town 27th August Melbourne with his love for football at Stanhope until 1953 when he returned to Stanhope to assist his parents on their dairy farm in Baldwin Road. Ellis came from a sporting family as his father also played football for Stanhope in the 1920’s and was club President in 1928 while still playing. He was also a very talented “A” grade cricketer for Stanhope who was able to use his height and long arms to advantage as a fast bowler and represented the KDCA in country week in Melbourne and Bendigo. In 1957 he moved to Nathalia where he was appointed playing coach of the Nathalia football club and he continued to play very strong and consistent football until his very sad death due to illness in 1961 at the very young age of 26. 5 - Charlie Gustavson – Played throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s and was known as one of the toughest but fairest footballers in his era. Was a pivotal member of the 1936, 1938 and 1944 Stanhope Premiership sides playing mainly as an onballer. During his footy career with Stanhope he won three best and fairest awards and was a driving force for the club. Charlie was able to consistently clear the ball from centre bounces and with his speed and versatility he was very difficult to tackle or be knocked off his feet. He was known for splitting packs and had a knack of tucking the ball under one arm and fending off opponents with the other. He was very strong in the air and a very good drop kick who read the play very well. In his later years he spent more of his time at full forward where his strong marking ability made it very difficult for his opponents. He was keenly sought after by Footscray and Collingwood with both clubs having talent scouts keeping a keen interest in his footy. Rochester also tried to lure him to Tigerland but his loyalty to Stanhope and work and family commitments saw him stay close to home. Also played football at Rushworth for 1 year where he was runner up in their best and fairest award. Charlie was also a member of the 1944 KDFL representative side that played against a representative camp team during the war. In summary, a great all round champion footballer who was in the mix as one of Stanhope’s all time greats.
Stanhope’s Top Ten Footballers (part two)
Continuing Alex (Yabby) Nelson’s top ten Stanhope footballers as we count down from number ten to number one. Last month we highlighted No. 10 – Brenton Gray, No. 9 – Ian McDonald and No. 8 – Roy Barrett . 7 – Gavin Exell - Played Carlton thirds with Royce Enders, played for Geelong alongside Gary Ablett senior, Billy Brownless, Paul Couch, Mark Bairstow, Gary Hocking, etc, finishing his career at the Brisbane Bears. Played successful country football in the Bendigo region, including premierships at the powerful Northern United in the Bendigo Football League through the mid 1980’s. Coached Stanhope 2000 and 2001 ending 14 year Premiership drought in 2000. Both seasons the club played in the Grand Final. Played 3 years of football for Stanhope, 2000, 2001, 2003 each year kicking over 100 goals, and winning the 2001 best and fairest. Played in 2 premiership sides, 2000 and 2003, a losing grand final 2001. Very accurate long left foot kick, a classic style and a privilege to watch, often having to compete against 2 opponents. Gavin was equally as proficient as a lead up forward in the goal square, he was truly an exceptional aerialist. His skill was not confined to the air, he was equally as talented at ground level and his ability to win his own ball in a contest was well known by all that played with and against him. Gavin’s consistency to churn out big numbers of goals each game he played and figure in our best players, was a credit to him, given his age when he first came to the club at a time in his career when most players would have retired. It is always hard to rate players, from different eras, at different standards of football, but it would be fair to say that if not our best full forward in the clubs history, certainly in our best few. As a coach, Gavin instilled a high level of professionalism and accountability, probably not seen before at the club, and was a leader on the field, not afraid to play himself as a ruckman where required to try and turn a game in our favour. Highly respected on and off the field, Gavin is back at the club supporting his son Jayden who is now playing at the club, and Gavin has been a frequent visitor since his last game in 2003. Gavin was definitely a big occasion player, standing up in every final he played scoring multiple goals for his club and figuring in the top 3 players for that match. The harder the opponent and the more significant the game, the best seemed to come out of Gavin and his leadership was unrivalled. A truly well respected player in our clubs history, the fact Gavin openly tells people that some of his best football memories have been created from our club, is a glowing tribute from a man of his stature. 6 – Ellis Hicks – A very talented footballer who played for Stanhope during the 1950’s while still a teenager and also played 5 games with South Melbourne in the VFL at centre half forward in 1956. Ellis was a very quick and high marking centre half forward with a very long and accurate drop kick. With a powerful and well built body, he was able to dominate games and won may games off his own boot. In his early days he attended Wesley College in Melbourne where he was able to pick up many football skills and put them to use at Stanhope. Was a very reliable and consistent footballer who always seemed to have the best defender match up against him. Ellis was a very good clubman who had many great years of football with Stanhope and his standout year was in 1955 when he won the club best and fairest in a very strong and talented side. In his early days Ellis juggled school commitments in

N.B.N coming to Stanhope The National Broadband Network (N.B.N) will soon be providing an upgraded wireless broadband service to all homes and businesses in the Stanhope area. This follows the erection of a tower on the corner of the Midland Highway and Railway avenue. A spokesperson for the N.B.N has stated that the service could be up and running within six months, once other towers are erected in the region. When it is available for connection, a small aerial will be required on each building, together with a wireless modem, It is expected this equipment will be provided, free of charge, by your current internet provider.

Stanhope Primary School Let the Balloons Go!
Friday afternoon was also the time when colourful balloons were released by our students. The balloons were symbols of friendship and to celebrate our school making the finals of the National ‘Legendiary’ Awards. With luck we will hear from far and wide as they land. Then students will be able to map and track their balloons’ journeys.
The members of the Stanhope & District
Development Committee and the volunteers at the

STANHOPE VICTORIA
Steven’s Antics I’m a very Friendly Bird
At the last Monster Garage Sale I met a lot of people who I haven’t seen in Stanhope before. A lot of them were interested to meet me cos they had heard a lot about Stanhope’s Steven t h e f r i e n d l y cockatoo. As you can see in the photo I got up close and personal with this bloke, he looked OK to me and he was very friendly. I don’t know where he came from, but he seemed a nice bloke. Have you seen the new NBN tower? it is very high for the blokes who erected it. I bet they were a bit scared those couple of blokes right up the top, cos it’s a long way down. I told them they shouldn’t be scared cos I am up that high and higher almost every day and I’m not scared at all. Those blokes have some good lunches. One day the back of one of their vans was open and I snuck in to have a look and guess what I found? I could smell a nice biscuit wrapped up in this bloke’s lunch. I had to tear it apart, but I certainly enjoyed that biscuit. I hear a rumour that I pinched some keys belonging to a fork lift. Well being a very tidy bird myself, I just didn’t like to see things just lying around, so I thought I would get rid of them. Don’t worry they may turn up - in a year or two.

Future of Flats in Doubt The future of the Department of Human Services Flats in Birdwood Avenue, adjacent to The Senior Citizen’s club rooms, is in doubt. Following a request by the Stanhope & District Development Committee (S&DDC) local member for Euroa, Steph Ryan arranged an onsite meeting with members of the S&DDC and other interested locals to discuss, with a representative of the department, the future of the flats. According to the department, to change the layout of the flats, turning one into two, to make them more liveable, would not be a viable proposition, because of the costs involved. As there is virtually no demand for them in Stanhope, the flats could possibly be demolished it was suggested. However, as there are so many homeless people this idea would be a waste of current resources. The department is open to and encouraging ideas from the public as to the future of the flats. If you have any ideas, please speak to any member of the S&DDC.
