LEGACY OF IDEAS

Your legacy is what you leave for future generations—you are building your legacy right now, every day. What do you want to be remembered for? Why are you here? What is your life’s purpose? For most people, the answers to these questions aren’t straight-forward; it’s a long, winding process of unfolding and ultimately it takes a lifetime to shape the answers. But when you’re writing a book, there is a concentrated effort to articulating your legacy of ideas.

You have something to share with the world. You might have some expertise that’s valuable, some wisdom you know will benefit others. Maybe you don’t consider yourself an “expert” yet, but you have a big idea that you want to disseminate. Don’t fear, most people will go through 4 distinct stages of development in terms of their expertise.

WAYS TO SPREAD IDEAS

There are now more ways to share ideas, instantly and internationally, then there have ever been in human history. You can use any social media platform imaginable to share videos, pictures, articles, artwork, music, products, podcasts—the options are truly limitless. But still, the most tried and true format for spreading ideas has remained the same for the past five centuries: the book.

Since the invention of Gutenberg’s press around 1439, the standard format of books has remained the same; there is a cover and back, pages inside, and the content is arranged in chapters. Spreading complex ideas through books, more than any other medium, has the strongest legacy of international success.

And now with the contemporary advantages of social media, book launches can be leveraged to serve a number of different purposes at once. Heathman gives examples of various authors using the release of their books to strategically launch marketing campaigns, leverage TV and radio interviews in important cities, negotiate book signings at strategic bookstores, differentiating themselves within their career, distribute complex technical ideas to their specific customer base, and generate social media attention and increase sales. GETTING STARTED: BUILDING A TREE

Writing a book takes dedication, organization, and DPBDIJOH. Heathman describes the basic structure through the metaphor of a tree. First, let yourself go wild and list all the stories, life experiences, key points, and details that come to mind around the subject of the book you want to write —these are the branches of the tree. Then, stand back and look at the themes and patterns of these details. Looking at the branches of your tree, formulate the big idea that your book is really about—this big idea is the trunk of the tree.

Next, you’ll want to divide the branches into distinct sections (chapters), so you have an organized plan for how to begin writing. Each chapter can contain 2-3 stories and should contain one main point that comes back to the trunk of the tree (your central theme). Once you have built this tree, the only step left is to do the work—and write your book! Sound intimidating? Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed—counteract that natural fear and procrastination with a writing schedule. If you can carve out 6-hours a week, you can write a book in ���EBZT. Heathman mentions how writing for 90-days can produce a sort of magic because you will build momentum and then suddenly––you have a book! Using your tree mind map, create a realistic schedule and checklist for yourself that will allow you to write for at least 6-hours each week for the next 90-days. Try and schedule at least 1-hour blocks so you can maximize your progress during each session but experiment and find what blocks of time work well for you.
