International Flight: XAVIER GOES IB

Man has been developing hisciviliza on in the past 2000years. Within that me,

he learned about the science andtechnology. Rapid development andglobaliza on is man’s trademark but willman be able to adapt to the changesthat he imposed on himself? The answeris yes. Unlike other creatures that have

become ex nct in the billions of yearsof the earth’s existence, man is capableof thinking and analyzing. This humancuriosity gives us an advantage withregards to adapta on. As the worldchanges, man and his way of thinkingalso changes. This evolu on in learningcan be seen right here, in Xavier School.

“Luceat Lux, let your light shine!” has long been Xavier School’smo o. For more than 50 years of Jesuit Educa on, this slogan, together with Magis, allowed for the development of the tradi onalteaching methods of the Jesuits. Seeking to nurse the light of itsstudents, Xavier School has con nuously been integra ng newmethods of learning. From the Xavier China Experience (XCE) toSingaporean Math, Xavier School has been trying to involve itsstudents with the rapid moderniza on of our world. Connec ngthe school with the world entails adop ng foreign ways of learningand one of the bold steps made by the governing body to furtheracquaint Xaverians of the interna onal stage is the incorpora on of the Interna onal Baccalaureate Program, more commonly known asthe IB.

of educa on they get. The IB was created to assist these children so that they may con nue their educa on whereverthey go. As me passed by, the governing body of the IB Program realized that the DP was not enough for them toachieve their goal of crea ng students that are independent and that will help build communi es. When this non-government organiza on was rst established, the coopera ng schools were mostly comprised of private interna onalschools, but today, over half of the IB schools are government owned.

IB HistoryIt all started in 1968 with the Interna onal School of Geneva, when a

group of teachers, assisted by a coali on of several interna onal schools, formed the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in response to the in ux of thechildren of diplomats and businessmen. These children, who are usuallywith their parents, are constantly traveling and this hampers the quality

What is the IB?The IB is a program that envisions ins lling in its students

the values of self-learning and understanding. Throughthe di erent ac vi es conducted in the learning centerswith the guidance of the teachers, the IB promotesindependent learning, and thus forming ac ve learners

out of its students. The IB o ers three programs namely the Primary Years

Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP)and the Diploma Programme (DP). The PYP is o eredto students from ages 3 to 12. Focused on developingstudents to be inquisi ve learners, the PYP aims to exposethe students to the world. The MYP is o ered to studentsfrom ages 11 to 16. This program enables its studentsto be cri cal thinkers, to see the connec ons betweenclassroom lessons and the world beyond. The DP, on theother hand, is o ered to students, ages 16 to 19. The DP,

being a pre-university course, prepares developing open-minded students for the interna onal community. DP willbe the IB program that will be in ally o ered in Xavier. Toeven out the playing eld, a uniform exam is given to allstudents who take the DP anywhere on the world.

The IB DP revolves around six core subjects that giveits students an opportunity to excel in di erent elds, such as Language A1, Second Language, Individualsand Socie es, Experimental Sciences, Mathema cs and Computer Science, and The Arts. The English StandardLevel (SL) & Higher Level (HL), Chinese SL, Business and

Management SL & HL, Chemistry SL & HL Physics SL & HLand Math SL & HL are the subjects that will be o ered inXavier. However, Xavier will not be o ering the arts for the

rst batch of IB students, but will be o ered to the nextbatch, and a few possible subjects that would fall underthis course would be Visual Arts, Music, and Theater Arts.In all subjects, students can choose between the standardlevel or higher level.

Aside from these six subject clusters, IB students will alsotake up the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Crea vity, Ac on,and Service (CAS), and Extended Essay (EE). The TOK willbe a subject where students will explore his own wayof learning. It will teach them the beauty of knowledgeand through this will eventually learn how to appreciateit. CAS is a service-oriented ac vity that will allow thestudents to express their desire to help our less fortunatebrethren. Students will be given the chance to share theirtalents through service ac vi es that they themselveswill conduct. EE is very similar to a thesis paper. It willbe a 4000-word synthesis research essay for the IB thatwill be about anything that interests the students. Thesethree core subjects will be required for all IB par cipantsto accomplish.

Planning, Preparation and ChangesThree years ago, with plans of improving the standards

of Xavier School, Fr. Johnny Go formed a team comprisedof Ms. Ditas Dairo, Mr. Mark Hernandez, and Ms. RosieMoscoso, to study the possibility of becoming an IB WorldSchool. Through intensive research, inves ga on andcompara ve studies, the team’s ndings showed thatXavier School had what it took to o er the IB program.Since the curriculum and the facili es of the school weredeemed comparable to those of interna onal schools, the team started with the applica on.

In pursuit of quality educa on, the administra on choseto integrate the IB DP as a pre-university course. As Ms.Rosie Moscoso, coordinator of the IB DP, said, “The IBwill prepare students so well for Ter ary Educa on thatthey will gain recogni on as IB learners not only in thePhilippines but also abroad.” This program will thusgrant its students a be er standing in the interna onalcommunity. The reason behind this is that the IB trains itsstudents to keep pace with the changes in our world. Theprogram prepares individuals to do produc ve changesas leaders on the world’s stage in work that concern theenvironment and the humani es. Le ers were sent andvisits were made and last February, Xavier School joinedthe ranks of the other IB World Schools, o ering the DP.

To prepare itself for the IB, the administra on sentteachers abroad to countries like Malaysia, China,Australia and Singapore as part of their training to be

cer ed as IB educators. In two years me, they wouldneed to travel abroad and train to be recer ed. Due tothis di culty in training teachers, only the best of thebest were handpicked from Xavier’s faculty. Even thoughthe teachers have a whole network of IB educators toassist them in teaching, the learning does not stop there.

With regards to tes ng and grading, the system of the IBis di erent from the grading system that we have in thepresent curriculum. Students will be taking exams thatare standardized for all IB Schools. In this way, both thestudents and the teachers would not know the contents

of the exam itself. Teachers will not grade the studentsbased on percentages, but from a scale of 1-7. A grade of 7means that the student has exceeded the expecta ons of the program. Any grade obtained lower than the passinggrade raises the possibility of the student not gaining anIB diploma although they s ll have the chance to obtaina diploma from Xavier. A er undergoing the program,by around the month of May, the students will have toreturn for a nal exam to gauge how much they learned. Who can join the IB DP?

In all actuality, any 3rd or 4th year student can avail of the program. However, the students who may apply have

to go through a selec on program, which assesses one’sacademic standards and poten al. Delving into thesetwo, rst, the student must reach and maintain a certaingrade in order to pass step one of availing of the IB DP.Secondly, the teachers will judge whether the student hasthe poten al to fully and immediately apply their lessonswhen faced with various challenges.

Needless to say, when it comes to nance, the IB DP isn’tlimited to those who can a ord it, but rather to thosestudents who deserve it.

Will IB be a success? No one can be certain at this point. Since the Interna onal

Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has just only beenused during school year 2010-2011, both teachers andstudents an cipate either the success or, hopefully not,the failure, of this new addi on to Xavier School. So far,the students have been adap ng well to the changes theyhave encountered within the school and because of this, their future looks bright both for them and for the school.

“Where will I be next year? Who will I be next year? Whatwill I be to my peers when next year begins? Will I t intothe new crowd? Will I s ll be the same, or will collegechange me? Will I even get into the college I want?”

Countless ques ons like these are beginning to visit ourminds more and more frequently now. As the seniors’

nal year in Xavier begins, things seem so di erent whenwe look inside ourselves.

It seems like just yesterday when the new batch of high school seniors were wide-eyed incoming freshmenwai ng to step into Xavier High School. We would s llimagine ourselves having the me of our lives whilelearning everything that our minds could take in. Alongwith this, we saw the never-ending excitement, pricelesslife lessons, and lifelong memories that would begin onthe day we traded khakis for black slacks. Now, the eyesof many s ll have reason to remain wide. A er three of the most uniquely memorable years in our lives so far,the incoming batch of seniors is slowly coming to realizethat this is all coming to an end. In a short year’s me,Batch 2011 will be bidding Xavier School goodbye (atleast for the mean me) as they begin a new journey. Ina short year’s me, the last instance for the seniors tocall themselves “high school students” will arrive. In ashort year’s me, the seniors will be le to reminisce the

good mes they used to live every day as they bracedthemselves for the voyage ahead. In a short year’s me,the seniors will be headed for college, where they willstart a new phase in their lives.

As the seniors prepare for college, which is now lessthan a year away, many of us feel like things are endingtoo soon. Despite this, people know that it’s me tomove forward. As we head for college, we move towardsa new life, one that will be very di erent from what wehad go en used to in high school. Whether one wouldlook forward with excitement or dread, the day will sooncome that we will nd ourselves calling a new school our“second home.” Heading towards the future and whereit may take us, we bid the beloved past goodbye andlook forward to the days of becoming the best possibleversions of ourselves.

The end of high school would make a huge impact onany student’s life. Most, if not all of high school studentsprobably feel as though they’ve already found their nichein the miniature society that is high school. The end of

this part of a student’s life would serve as a sign thatthings will never be the same again. Going to collegewould mean that the graduate would have to start over.It would be an end of something beau ful yet also anew beginning to reach for even greater heights. Today’ssenior at the top of his game would be tomorrow’s lostfreshman trying to nd his way to his class. Today’s quietguy at the back of the class could be tomorrow’s life of the party. Today’s students of Xavier could be tomorrow’sstudents of Ateneo, La Salle, UP, UST, UE, UA&P, or maybeeven Harvard.

Regardless of where one would be headed, onething will remain constant. Wherever the seniors end up,the fact will remain that he was, is, and always will bea Xaverian. If today’s self-assured senior would becometomorrow’s freshman lost on the way to class, he wills ll be a Xaverian. Even though the most quiet guy in thebatch becomes the next leader of the Philippines, he will

s ll remember the Golden Stallion. Even if today’s averagestudent turns out to be the Dean’s Lister of tomorrow,he will s ll be a Xaverian. One’s tongue will s ll begin tosay “cher” before it shi s to say “Sir” instead. One’s heartwould s ll stop at the ques on “Xavier ka rin, bro?” One’shead will s ll turn every me he sees someone wearingthe trademark dark blue shorts will the golden-yellowstripes at the side. One’s mind will s ll remember all thevalues he was taught to live by in his years in Xavier. One’shunger will s ll not be sa s ed at the sight of a gradethat he knows could’ve been higher. Why? It is becausethat’s who we have become during our stay in Xavier. Asold habits die hard, so will more than ten years of growth,MAGIS, the Six C’s, and that constant reminder to “let ourlight shine.” While we may be imported into new schools,a Xaverian will always be a Xaverian.

In a year’s me, we will no longer nd ourselves wearingthe polo and slacks that we’ve come to grow morecomfortable with. In a year’s me life will be very di erentas change and reinforcement both come to whoever andwhatever we are.

In a year’s me, where will you be? Will you s ll be whoyou are today? When things become di erent as you walkthrough new, unfamiliar hallways, what will happen? Inthat year’s me, will you s ll be the Xaverian that you aretoday?

Once_a_Xaverian,

Iron Man 2 rst captured our a en on with its eye-grabbing trailer released months before. The hype quicklybuilt up as many fans marked their calendars for the May1, 2010 release date. On the rst day that it came outin cinemas, people from various ages and interests linedup and lled cinemas as seats quickly ran out. Was allthis panic worth it, or did the excited viewers go homedisappointed?

Summary

Iron Man 2 begins with the introduc on of new characterswhom we nd out to be Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) andhis dying father Anton Vanko (Yevgeni Lazarev). Throughthe news, they learn that Tony Stark (Robert DowneyJr.) is Iron Man. Before Anton dies, he apologizes to his

son and says that the only inheritance he can give is hisknowledge. Ivan later plots revenge against Tony Starkdue to a con ict in the dark past of their families.

Stark faces numerous problems in this sequel as theworld greatly depended on the Iron Man. This laterleads to numerous other con icts like pressure from themilitary for him to give up his technology and even bloodpoisoning due to the over-use of his suit that quickly burnsup the power core in his “arc reactor.” Aside from this, hisbusiness compe tor Jus n Hammer (Sam Rockwell) laterteams up with Ivan Vanko, and the duo creates even moreproblems for Stark.

As the story progresses, Tony discovers more abouthimself and his father Howard Stark (John Sla ery), andhis rela onship with Pepper Po s (Gwyneth Paltrow) istested. As things get complicated and problems pile ontop of one another, will Stark be able to achieve the classichappy ending? You’ll have to watch the movie to nd out.

Visuals and Sounds 9/10

Iron Man 2 features stunning visual displays, as expectedfrom a Marvel ac on movie. The company Percep onhas also created a wide array of futuris c user interfacesfor the numerous technological advances shown in themovie. Most of the e ects blend seamlessly together.Iron Man 2 is truly a feast for the eyes.

Also, the music ts most of the scenes appropriatelyand adds plenty of emo on to them. However, the songsaren’t that varied and don’t match up to the work of Ramin Djawadi from the rst movie.

Characters 8/10

Although there was an improvement compared to

the prequel, the characters were s ll not developedwell enough, making it a seemingly rushed movie. Theinclusion of new characters like Natalie Rushman wasgreat, although they could have been more involved. Inthis movie, we also nd out more about Tony’s past, andthe movie succeeded in showing a more human side of Iron Man, but there were just too many ques ons leunanswered.

Overall and Story 8/10

Iron Man 2 has an ambi ous and exci ng plot. Overall,

however, it seemed rushed, which was most evident inthe hasty nal ba le. It could have been be er if it werelonger so that the movie could answer more ques ons sothat the audience could experience the story more fully. The e ects were all great, but great movies must alsohave solid content within all that eye-candy, and Iron Mandidn’t deliver as well as most would had hoped.

Open Arms to New

TEACHINGSEnrique Panganiban 4A

It has been about54 years sinceXavier School wasestablished, andsince then, her wallshave been housingthe best of the best.

I am speaking notonly of the teachersand sta , but of the students aswell, whose talentshave been no cedand revered byothers a er theirgradua on earningthem the respectthey deserve. Thanks to the

long line of school directors, the rst one being Fr. JeanDesautels S.J., and Fr. Johnny Go S.J., the current schooldirector, the school has kept her most renowned vision:Men fully alive endowed with a passion for jus ce andthe skills for development.

Backing the directors, the teachers and sta and thestudents are what people know as the reason whyXavier holds such a good reputa on. Her subject ma erand curriculum observes a strict set of lesson plansthat enable the students to use these new teachings intheir everyday lives. Suppor ng this statement, Xaviertoo provides the parents and those who wish to enrollwith a diverse environment. Basically, Xavier School triesher best to include and a ain all the possible means of teaching in order to give to the students what they needto know when they graduate from school.

There are a couple of instances where Xavier can beproven to be a “diverse” school. Think about it. Xavierhires Chinese teachers coming from Mainland China orTaiwan. Xavier accepts Filipino teachers from the UP.She gets English teachers from Ateneo. Coupled withthese teachers are probably 5-star subject curriculums.Following the Singaporean method of teaching math

and science, Xavier School has gained a place among theother top-rated schools as well.

This school year, Xavier has included the IB Program orthe Interna onal Baccalaureate Program, which involves amore stringent curriculum. Informa on gathered suggeststhat the program’s subjects use up longer periods of me.However, with pain comes glory, a er all what may ndit di cult, student graduates of this program will have aneasier me applying for foreign colleges, and will have amore extensive knowledge about various elds.

Obviously, Xavier’s radical changes and improvements

over the years, have also improved the student’s learninghabits. Not only does it provide just a normal schoolwould, but it also ensures that the students retain whatthey learn and the teachers create an environment wherethe pupils surely would be eager to learn. Especially in acountry where foreign in uence and technology is at itslow, Xavier may very well be the pioneering establishmentto the Philippines serving as a structure that, though mayhave a high standard upkeep, can s ll reap the bene tsa er all the hardships it has endured.

Accep ng new ideas and new teaching and learning

methods are a posi ve approach toward a world full of surprises. Especially since Xavier School is located in athird world country, of course she would want to keep atpar with the methods and teachings of schools from the

rst world countries. Xavier is surely “playing with the bigboys” in terms of technology and educa on.

NationalismFad or Fact?Ryan Yu 4C Stallion Features Editor

Wherever we go nowadays, we almost always see peoplewearing clothes and accessories that remind us of ourcountry, be it a map of the Philippines on a plain-coloredshirt or yellow baller IDs with a yellow ribbon. This fashionphenomenon has spread like wild re, and I’m sure thatmost, if not all of us have conformed to this trend. However, all fads die, and when they do, they rarely return. Thismakes me wonder: are these symbols of na onalism, andeven na onalism itself, just meaningless fads meant to bethrown away a er a while, or can they have a meaningful, las ng impact on the Filipino people?

A fad can be de ned as an object or act that is usuallygiven too much a en on without regard for its actualusefulness or value and does not remain popular for a verylong me. Fads are usually used to represent a par cularera in human history. For example, neon-colored things andtorn jeans prac cally represent the eigh es, while KooshBalls and beepers vividly remind us of the nine es.

By this de ni on, we can, to an extent, considerPhilippine-themed clothing and accessories as fads.

Most people wear these things not for the sake of givingimportance to and showing love for our country. Instead,we simply purchase and wear these things to get no cedand to t in with the current dictates of fashion and society. We enjoy following the latest trends, and we think nothingmore of it.

However, what we don’t realize is that this suddenspark of interest for na onalism might just be whatour dying country needs. Whenever someone sees thePhilippine map on someone’s shirt, he doesn’t simply see ameaningless ink blot. Instead, he associates this image withour country, and subconsciously, the prominent aspectsthat make the Philippines what it is today come into hismind. When one sees a yellow ribbon, he does not thinkof it as a piece of trash le from an opened gi . Rather, the series of events in the EDSA Revolu on ash back inhis mind, reminding him of our rich history. Therefore, these so-called fads could possibly serve as the means tolet na onalism make a much-needed comeback in ourmotherland.

The quote, “You are what you wear,” a varia on of themore popular statement, “You are what you eat,” de nitelyapplies in the case of Philippine-themed apparel. Most

people choose what they wear to both special and ordinaryoccasions instead of just picking out anything that they ndlying around in the house because they nd some kind of meaning to their clothing. For the majority, that meaningis simply a kind of aesthe c value, but I’d like to believethat some people wear what they believe in, and whenthey wear Philippine map shirts, they boldly state that theyare proud to belong to our country. Clothing that is botha rac ve and na onalis c has the poten al to remind thepeople that it is cool to be Filipino, and although we are soused to buying imported goods, this opportunity to wearmore things made locally might signal the decline of colonialmentality and the resuscita on of patrio sm. Thus, thiscould serve as the path for the current genera on to nallylive out the same love for this country that our ancestorshad when they fought for our freedom.

However, just as na onalism began from what mostpeople would consider a fad, there is a possibility for it toend just as quickly and as suddenly as other crazes do. Theway to stop this is by ac ng upon what has already been

started. If na onalism remains abstract, soon enough, it willdevolve into a distant memory that will simply fade awayin the Filipinos’ minds. However, once concrete and las ngac on is taken, the sense of na onalism will be sustained inthe minds and hearts of the people. Many have long beenhoping for an opportunity like this to come, so we cannota ord to let it slip out of our hands. We urgently need toappreciate the rich history and culture, the spectacularnatural resources, and the extraordinary people of thePhilippines, our motherland, before na onalism, like otherfads, dies and never returns.

The spark of na onalism, which is seen through the sudden

popularity Philippine-themed clothing and accessories, isa great opportunity for its resurgence at a me when it isdesperately needed. However, it will simply be a icker thatwill die unless the ame of its essence is sustained withinthe Filipino people through concrete ac on. Just as it haddone in mes of great crisis, the country is once again callingfor heroes to stand up and lead the way to turning this fadinto a fact. Only one ques on remains: are you willing toanswer that call and become a hero?
