International Flight:XAVIER GOES IB!

Man has been developing his civilization in the past 2000 years. Within that time,

he learned about the science and technology. Rapid development and globalization is man’s trademark but will man be able to adapt to the changes that he imposed on himself? The answer is yes. Unlike other creatures that have become extinct in the billions of years of the earth’s existence, man is capable of thinking and analyzing. This human curiosity gives us an advantage with regards to adaptation. As the world changes, man and his way of thinking also changes. This evolution in learning can be seen right here, in Xavier School.

“Luceat Lux, let your light shine!” has long been Xavier School’s motto. For more than 50 years of Jesuit Education, this slogan, together with Magis, allowed for the development of the traditional teaching methods of the Jesuits. Seeking to nurse the light of its students, Xavier School has continuously been integrating new methods of learning. From the Xavier China Experience (XCE) to Singaporean Math, Xavier School has been trying to involve its students with the rapid modernization of our world. Connecting the school with the world entails adopting foreign ways of learning and one of the bold steps made by the governing body to further acquaint Xaverians of the international stage is the incorporation of the International Baccalaureate Program, more commonly known as the IB.

of education they get. The IB was created to assist these children so that they may continue their education wherever they go. As time passed by, the governing body of the IB Program realized that the DP was not enough for them to achieve their goal of creating students that are independent and that will help build communities. When this non-government organization was first established, the cooperating schools were mostly comprised of private international schools, but today, over half of the IB schools are government owned.

IB HistoryIt all started in 1968 with the International School of Geneva, when a

group of teachers, assisted by a coalition of several international schools, formed the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in response to the influx of the children of diplomats and businessmen. These children, who are usually with their parents, are constantly traveling and this hampers the quality

What is the IB?The IB is a program that envisions instilling in its students

the values of self-learning and understanding. Through the different activities conducted in the learning centers with the guidance of the teachers, the IB promotes independent learning, and thus forming active learners out of its students.

The IB offers three programs namely the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). The PYP is offered to students from ages 3 to 12. Focused on developing students to be inquisitive learners, the PYP aims to expose the students to the world. The MYP is offered to students from ages 11 to 16. This program enables its students to be critical thinkers, to see the connections between classroom lessons and the world beyond. The DP, on the other hand, is offered to students, ages 16 to 19. The DP, being a pre-university course, prepares developing open-minded students for the international community. DP will be the IB program that will be intially offered in Xavier. To even out the playing field, a uniform exam is given to all students who take the DP anywhere on the world.

The IB DP revolves around six core subjects that give its students an opportunity to excel in different fields, such as Language A1, Second Language, Individuals and Societies, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, and The Arts. The English Standard Level (SL) & Higher Level (HL), Chinese SL, Business and Management SL & HL, Chemistry SL & HL Physics SL & HL and Math SL & HL are the subjects that will be offered in Xavier. However, Xavier will not be offering the arts for the first batch of IB students, but will be offered to the next batch, and a few possible subjects that would fall under this course would be Visual Arts, Music, and Theater Arts. In all subjects, students can choose between the standard level or higher level.

Aside from these six subject clusters, IB students will also take up the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS), and Extended Essay (EE). The TOK will be a subject where students will explore his own way of learning. It will teach them the beauty of knowledge and through this will eventually learn how to appreciate it. CAS is a service-oriented activity that will allow the students to express their desire to help our less fortunate brethren. Students will be given the chance to share their talents through service activities that they themselves will conduct. EE is very similar to a thesis paper. It will be a 4000-word synthesis research essay for the IB that will be about anything that interests the students. These three core subjects will be required for all IB participants to accomplish.

Planning, Preparation and ChangesThree years ago, with plans of improving the standards

of Xavier School, Fr. Johnny Go formed a team comprised of Ms. Ditas Dairo, Mr. Mark Hernandez, and Ms. Rosie Moscoso, to study the possibility of becoming an IB World School. Through intensive research, investigation and comparative studies, the team’s findings showed that Xavier School had what it took to offer the IB program. Since the curriculum and the facilities of the school were deemed comparable to those of international schools, the team started with the application.

In pursuit of quality education, the administration chose to integrate the IB DP as a pre-university course. As Ms. Rosie Moscoso, coordinator of the IB DP, said, “The IB will prepare students so well for Tertiary Education that they will gain recognition as IB learners not only in the Philippines but also abroad.” This program will thus grant its students a better standing in the international community. The reason behind this is that the IB trains its students to keep pace with the changes in our world. The program prepares individuals to do productive changes as leaders on the world’s stage in work that concern the environment and the humanities. Letters were sent and visits were made and last February, Xavier School joined the ranks of the other IB World Schools, offering the DP.

Page 8: Stallion Major Issue 1 SY2010-2011

8

To prepare itself for the IB, the administration sent teachers abroad to countries like Malaysia, China, Australia and Singapore as part of their training to be certified as IB educators. In two years time, they would need to travel abroad and train to be recertified. Due to this difficulty in training teachers, only the best of the best were handpicked from Xavier’s faculty. Even though the teachers have a whole network of IB educators to assist them in teaching, the learning does not stop there.

With regards to testing and grading, the system of the IB is different from the grading system that we have in the present curriculum. Students will be taking exams that are standardized for all IB Schools. In this way, both the students and the teachers would not know the contents of the exam itself. Teachers will not grade the students based on percentages, but from a scale of 1-7. A grade of 7 means that the student has exceeded the expectations of the program. Any grade obtained lower than the passing grade raises the possibility of the student not gaining an IB diploma although they still have the chance to obtain a diploma from Xavier. After undergoing the program, by around the month of May, the students will have to return for a final exam to gauge how much they learned. Who can join the IB DP?

In all actuality, any 3rd or 4th year student can avail of the program. However, the students who may apply have to go through a selection program, which assesses one’s academic standards and potential. Delving into these two, first, the student must reach and maintain a certain grade in order to pass step one of availing of the IB DP. Secondly, the teachers will judge whether the student has the potential to fully and immediately apply their lessons when faced with various challenges.

Needless to say, when it comes to finance, the IB DP isn’t limited to those who can afford it, but rather to those students who deserve it.

Will IB be a success? No one can be certain at this point. Since the International

Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has just only been used during school year 2010-2011, both teachers and students anticipate either the success or, hopefully not, the failure, of this new addition to Xavier School. So far, the students have been adapting well to the changes they have encountered within the school and because of this, their future looks bright both for them and for the school.

Remember those days when you used to ask your friends, “Hey, can you write me a Testi?” or when you had a personal site where you posted your Photos and Blogs? Well, the reign of Friendster and Multiply might be over, but out of the ashes of their popularity comes various social networking sites, many of which we cannot go a day without logging in.

First, we have Facebook. For almost two years now, Facebook has gained millions of users after the old age that was Multiply and Friendster. Facebook was able to attract many of its users because of its diverse features.

The News Feed is where people instantly get updates for their friends and family, helping us keep up with the fast-pace life. The Wall, where you can easily see a person’s updates, is a useful feature for snooping on your crush. Photos let users post pictures from parties, enabling tagging so persons who are in them will know that a picture of them is up. Videos allow users to share priceless moments in motion.

Notes and Events spread messages and occasions rapidly. Chatting with friends makes communication quick and simple. Links lets people present what they’ve found on the internet, even on YouTube, with just one click. Applications entertain with random generators like the hilarious “Lover of the Day” app which can basically pair you up with anyone, even with your own gender. Games, like in NeoPets, offer addicting hours of playing Mafia Wars, Hotel City, Farmville and more.

Accessing all of these requires a People, Page or Group Facebook account. People accounts are what basic users sign up for, allowing you to become friends with anyone from all over the world. If you don’t really want to be friends with strangers, you can use Mutual Friends to find the friends of your friends.

Liking (originally the “Become a Fan” button, which we all miss) a Page or becoming a member of a Group is usually for your own laughter as you read Page or Group names

like “Stop Being Mean To Justin Bieber, She Has Feelings Too” and many more. Some Pages even require you to like before viewing their priceless content. What’s to like if you don’t even know what you’re going to like?

With all these unique features, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Facebook has become very influential in our daily lives, whether it’s to let time pass or just hang out with friends and family online.

Secondly, we have the concise and precise text feed that is Twitter. For the past year, Twitter has been raided by celebrities and the fans who adore and immediately follow them. Much like the Status feature in Facebook, users can find themselves answering the question, “What are you doing right now?” and typing their way to thousands of updates known as “tweets.”

Updates can contain anything from what or where you’re eating at right now or the lyrics you can’t get out of your head, so long as its less than 140 characters. URLs are even shortened to fit these limitations. Tweets also allow mentioning another user via prefixing the “@” symbol to the username of a Twitter account, much like the tagging in Facebook. Topics of tweets can trend in Twitter with the use of the “#” symbol so you can easily see what Twitter users have been tweeting about like #Glee.

Favoriting a tweet is the counterpart of liking in Facebook. If you really like a tweet and want to make it your own, you can use the Retweet feature, which allows you to mention the Twitter user where you got the tweet from, and post with it the tweet itself. Retweeting a friend’s update or your favorite celebrity’s tweet is only unique to Twitter, even indicating the acronym “RT” in retweets to fit these updates in the character limit.

Twitter accounts you follow can also be sorted in Lists, so that you can separate your celebrities and your friends in their own feeds. Keeping track of tweets can be quite tedious on a web browser even with the List feature. That’s why software like TweetDeck, Twitterific and much more are being used by many Twitter users to help them organize who they follow and the updates they receive from them.

Thanks to Twitter, celebrities and authorities can effortlessly send messages to the masses, as can we to our friends and family.

With these two sites and their diverse features, many of us can’t live a day without logging in Facebook and Twitter. Just from this, we can already say these sites are significant in our every day lives. Social networks have undeniably affected the way a person communicates to society and how society communicates to a person.

“Where will I be next year? Who will I be next year? What will I be to my peers when next year begins? Will I fit into the new crowd? Will I still be the same, or will college change me? Will I even get into the college I want?”

Countless questions like these are beginning to visit our minds more and more frequently now. As the seniors’ final year in Xavier begins, things seem so different when we look inside ourselves.

It seems like just yesterday when the new batch of high school seniors were wide-eyed incoming freshmen waiting to step into Xavier High School. We would still imagine ourselves having the time of our lives while learning everything that our minds could take in. Along with this, we saw the never-ending excitement, priceless life lessons, and lifelong memories that would begin on the day we traded khakis for black slacks. Now, the eyes of many still have reason to remain wide. After three of the most uniquely memorable years in our lives so far, the incoming batch of seniors is slowly coming to realize that this is all coming to an end. In a short year’s time, Batch 2011 will be bidding Xavier School goodbye (at least for the meantime) as they begin a new journey. In a short year’s time, the last instance for the seniors to call themselves “high school students” will arrive. In a short year’s time, the seniors will be left to reminisce the good times they used to live every day as they braced themselves for the voyage ahead. In a short year’s time, the seniors will be headed for college, where they will start a new phase in their lives.

As the seniors prepare for college, which is now less than a year away, many of us feel like things are ending too soon. Despite this, people know that it’s time to move forward. As we head for college, we move towards a new life, one that will be very different from what we had gotten used to in high school. Whether one would look forward with excitement or dread, the day will soon come that we will find ourselves calling a new school our “second home.” Heading towards the future and where it may take us, we bid the beloved past goodbye and look forward to the days of becoming the best possible versions of ourselves.

The end of high school would make a huge impact on any student’s life. Most, if not all of high school students probably feel as though they’ve already found their niche in the miniature society that is high school. The end of

this part of a student’s life would serve as a sign that things will never be the same again. Going to college would mean that the graduate would have to start over. It would be an end of something beautiful yet also a new beginning to reach for even greater heights. Today’s senior at the top of his game would be tomorrow’s lost freshman trying to find his way to his class. Today’s quiet guy at the back of the class could be tomorrow’s life of the party. Today’s students of Xavier could be tomorrow’s students of Ateneo, La Salle, UP, UST, UE, UA&P, or maybe even Harvard.

Regardless of where one would be headed, one thing will remain constant. Wherever the seniors end up, the fact will remain that he was, is, and always will be a Xaverian. If today’s self-assured senior would become tomorrow’s freshman lost on the way to class, he will still be a Xaverian. Even though the most quiet guy in the batch becomes the next leader of the Philippines, he will still remember the Golden Stallion. Even if today’s average student turns out to be the Dean’s Lister of tomorrow, he will still be a Xaverian. One’s tongue will still begin to say “cher” before it shifts to say “Sir” instead. One’s heart would still stop at the question “Xavier ka rin, bro?” One’s head will still turn every time he sees someone wearing the trademark dark blue shorts will the golden-yellow stripes at the side. One’s mind will still remember all the values he was taught to live by in his years in Xavier. One’s hunger will still not be satisfied at the sight of a grade that he knows could’ve been higher. Why? It is because that’s who we have become during our stay in Xavier. As old habits die hard, so will more than ten years of growth, MAGIS, the Six C’s, and that constant reminder to “let our light shine.” While we may be imported into new schools, a Xaverian will always be a Xaverian.

In a year’s time, we will no longer find ourselves wearing the polo and slacks that we’ve come to grow more comfortable with. In a year’s time life will be very different as change and reinforcement both come to whoever and whatever we are.

In a year’s time, where will you be? Will you still be who you are today? When things become different as you walk through new, unfamiliar hallways, what will happen? In that year’s time, will you still be the Xaverian that you are today?

Always a XaverianDavid Tan 4B

Iron Man 2 first captured our attention with its eye-grabbing trailer released months before. The hype quickly built up as many fans marked their calendars for the May 1, 2010 release date. On the first day that it came out in cinemas, people from various ages and interests lined up and filled cinemas as seats quickly ran out. Was all this panic worth it, or did the excited viewers go home disappointed?

SummaryIron Man 2 begins with the introduction of new characters

whom we find out to be Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) and his dying father Anton Vanko (Yevgeni Lazarev). Through the news, they learn that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is Iron Man. Before Anton dies, he apologizes to his son and says that the only inheritance he can give is his knowledge. Ivan later plots revenge against Tony Stark due to a conflict in the dark past of their families.

Stark faces numerous problems in this sequel as the world greatly depended on the Iron Man. This later leads to numerous other conflicts like pressure from the military for him to give up his technology and even blood poisoning due to the over-use of his suit that quickly burns up the power core in his “arc reactor.” Aside from this, his business competitor Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) later teams up with Ivan Vanko, and the duo creates even more problems for Stark.

As the story progresses, Tony discovers more about himself and his father Howard Stark (John Slattery), and his relationship with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is tested. As things get complicated and problems pile on top of one another, will Stark be able to achieve the classic happy ending? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out.

Visuals and Sounds 9/10Iron Man 2 features stunning visual displays, as expected

from a Marvel action movie. The company Perception has also created a wide array of futuristic user interfaces for the numerous technological advances shown in the movie. Most of the effects blend seamlessly together. Iron Man 2 is truly a feast for the eyes.

Also, the music fits most of the scenes appropriately and adds plenty of emotion to them. However, the songs aren’t that varied and don’t match up to the work of Ramin Djawadi from the first movie.

Characters 8/10Although there was an improvement compared to

the prequel, the characters were still not developed well enough, making it a seemingly rushed movie. The inclusion of new characters like Natalie Rushman was great, although they could have been more involved. In this movie, we also find out more about Tony’s past, and the movie succeeded in showing a more human side of Iron Man, but there were just too many questions left unanswered.

Overall and Story 8/10Iron Man 2 has an ambitious and exciting plot. Overall,

however, it seemed rushed, which was most evident in the hasty final battle. It could have been better if it were longer so that the movie could answer more questions so that the audience could experience the story more fully. The effects were all great, but great movies must also have solid content within all that eye-candy, and Iron Man didn’t deliver as well as most would had hoped.

Open Arms to New

TEACHINGSEnrique Panganiban 4A

It has been about 54 years since Xavier School was established, and since then, her walls have been housing the best of the best. I am speaking not only of the teachers and staff, but of the students as well, whose talents have been noticed and revered by others after their graduation earning them the respect they deserve. Thanks to the

long line of school directors, the first one being Fr. Jean Desautels S.J., and Fr. Johnny Go S.J., the current school director, the school has kept her most renowned vision: Men fully alive endowed with a passion for justice and the skills for development.

Backing the directors, the teachers and staff and the students are what people know as the reason why Xavier holds such a good reputation. Her subject matter and curriculum observes a strict set of lesson plans that enable the students to use these new teachings in their everyday lives. Supporting this statement, Xavier too provides the parents and those who wish to enroll with a diverse environment. Basically, Xavier School tries her best to include and attain all the possible means of teaching in order to give to the students what they need to know when they graduate from school.

There are a couple of instances where Xavier can be proven to be a “diverse” school. Think about it. Xavier hires Chinese teachers coming from Mainland China or Taiwan. Xavier accepts Filipino teachers from the UP. She gets English teachers from Ateneo. Coupled with these teachers are probably 5-star subject curriculums. Following the Singaporean method of teaching math and science, Xavier School has gained a place among the other top-rated schools as well.

This school year, Xavier has included the IB Program or the International Baccalaureate Program, which involves a more stringent curriculum. Information gathered suggests that the program’s subjects use up longer periods of time. However, with pain comes glory, after all what may find it difficult, student graduates of this program will have an easier time applying for foreign colleges, and will have a more extensive knowledge about various fields.

Obviously, Xavier’s radical changes and improvements over the years, have also improved the student’s learning habits. Not only does it provide just a normal school would, but it also ensures that the students retain what they learn and the teachers create an environment where the pupils surely would be eager to learn. Especially in a country where foreign influence and technology is at its low, Xavier may very well be the pioneering establishment to the Philippines serving as a structure that, though may have a high standard upkeep, can still reap the benefits after all the hardships it has endured.

Accepting new ideas and new teaching and learning methods are a positive approach toward a world full of surprises. Especially since Xavier School is located in a third world country, of course she would want to keep at par with the methods and teachings of schools from the first world countries. Xavier is surely “playing with the big boys” in terms of technology and education.

[In a Nutshell]

Page 19: Stallion Major Issue 1 SY2010-2011

NationalismFad or Fact?Ryan Yu 4C Stallion Features Editor

Wherever we go nowadays, we almost always see people wearing clothes and accessories that remind us of our country, be it a map of the Philippines on a plain-colored shirt or yellow baller IDs with a yellow ribbon. This fashion phenomenon has spread like wildfire, and I’m sure that most, if not all of us have conformed to this trend. However, all fads die, and when they do, they rarely return. This makes me wonder: are these symbols of nationalism, and even nationalism itself, just meaningless fads meant to be thrown away after a while, or can they have a meaningful, lasting impact on the Filipino people?

A fad can be defined as an object or act that is usually given too much attention without regard for its actual usefulness or value and does not remain popular for a very long time. Fads are usually used to represent a particular era in human history. For example, neon-colored things and torn jeans practically represent the eighties, while Koosh Balls and beepers vividly remind us of the nineties.

By this definition, we can, to an extent, consider Philippine-themed clothing and accessories as fads. Most people wear these things not for the sake of giving importance to and showing love for our country. Instead, we simply purchase and wear these things to get noticed and to fit in with the current dictates of fashion and society. We enjoy following the latest trends, and we think nothing more of it.

However, what we don’t realize is that this sudden spark of interest for nationalism might just be what our dying country needs. Whenever someone sees the Philippine map on someone’s shirt, he doesn’t simply see a meaningless ink blot. Instead, he associates this image with our country, and subconsciously, the prominent aspects that make the Philippines what it is today come into his mind. When one sees a yellow ribbon, he does not think of it as a piece of trash left from an opened gift. Rather, the series of events in the EDSA Revolution flash back in his mind, reminding him of our rich history. Therefore, these so-called fads could possibly serve as the means to let nationalism make a much-needed comeback in our motherland.

The quote, “You are what you wear,” a variation of the more popular statement, “You are what you eat,” definitely applies in the case of Philippine-themed apparel. Most

people choose what they wear to both special and ordinary occasions instead of just picking out anything that they find lying around in the house because they find some kind of meaning to their clothing. For the majority, that meaning is simply a kind of aesthetic value, but I’d like to believe that some people wear what they believe in, and when they wear Philippine map shirts, they boldly state that they are proud to belong to our country. Clothing that is both attractive and nationalistic has the potential to remind the people that it is cool to be Filipino, and although we are so used to buying imported goods, this opportunity to wear more things made locally might signal the decline of colonial mentality and the resuscitation of patriotism. Thus, this could serve as the path for the current generation to finally live out the same love for this country that our ancestors had when they fought for our freedom.

However, just as nationalism began from what most people would consider a fad, there is a possibility for it to end just as quickly and as suddenly as other crazes do. The way to stop this is by acting upon what has already been started. If nationalism remains abstract, soon enough, it will devolve into a distant memory that will simply fade away in the Filipinos’ minds. However, once concrete and lasting action is taken, the sense of nationalism will be sustained in the minds and hearts of the people. Many have long been hoping for an opportunity like this to come, so we cannot afford to let it slip out of our hands. We urgently need to appreciate the rich history and culture, the spectacular natural resources, and the extraordinary people of the Philippines, our motherland, before nationalism, like other fads, dies and never returns.

The spark of nationalism, which is seen through the sudden popularity Philippine-themed clothing and accessories, is a great opportunity for its resurgence at a time when it is desperately needed. However, it will simply be a flicker that will die unless the flame of its essence is sustained within the Filipino people through concrete action. Just as it had done in times of great crisis, the country is once again calling for heroes to stand up and lead the way to turning this fad into a fact. Only one question remains: are you willing to answer that call and become a hero?
